SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
A careful operator is the best operator. Most accidents can be avoided by observing certain safety
precautions. Read and understand these precautions before operating the Front Mounted Mower.
This equipment should be operated only by those who have been trained in its safe use.
THE MOWER
Know and understand all mower instructions and
Safety Precautions before assembly, service, or
operation. Also read and understand all Safety
Precautions in the Tractor Operators Manual.
Keep the tractor and mower in good operating
condition at all times. Always keep all shields
and guards securely in place.
Make sure all fastening hardware is properly
tightened before operating the tractor and
mower.
Keep all Safety Decals clean and free of dirt and
grime. Always replace any Safety Decals that
become damaged, lost, painted over, or
otherwise become illegible. Replace all Safety
Decals when repainting the cutter
MOWER OPERATION
DO NOT permit anyone but the operator to ride
on the tractor and mower. There is no safe place
on this equipment for passengers.
Clear the area of all visible debris before
beginning mowing operations.
Mow only during daylight hours, or when the
area is well lit artificially.
To avoid loss of control, and to prevent
overturning the tractor and mower, always mow
up and down slopes, never across. DO NOT
operate on steep slopes.
Always slow down when turning.
Always keep mower discharge directed away
from people or animals, which could be injured,
and away from objects that could be damaged
by debris thrown by the mowing blades.
To avoid the possibility of injury from flying
debris, NEVER operate the mower raised into
the transport position.
Slop and inspect all parts of the mower after
striking any foreign object. Repair any damage
before resuming mowing operations.
Disengage power to the mower and make sure
the area behind the tractor and mower is clear
before backing up.
The operator should NEVER leave the tractor
seat with the mower blades rotating, with the
tractor in motion, or when the tractor engine is
running.
Always be alert for vehicle traffic when crossing
or mowing near roadways. Avoid bystanders
when mowing on or near public facilities.
THE TRACTOR
Always use an approved Roll Over Protective
Structure (ROPS) and Seat Belt for safe
operation. Overturning a tractor, without a
ROPS, can result in serious injury or death. If
your tractor is not equipped with a ROPS and
Seat Belt, see your SHIBAURA Dealer.
ALWAYS wear the seat belt on ROPS equipped
tractors. DO NOT use a seat belt if the tractor
ROPS has been removed. NEVER allow an
open flame near the fuel tank or tractor battery.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS - Continued
OPERATING THE TRACTOR & MOWER
Use the hand holds and step platforms when
mounting and dismounting the tractor to prevent
falling. Always keep steps and platforms clean
and free of mud or other debris.
The operator MUST remain in the tractor seat at
all times while mowing, transporting, or any time
the tractor engine is running.
NEVER start the engine while standing beside
the tractor. The operator MUST sit in the tractor
seat when starting the engine.
NEVER run the engine in a closed building
without adequate ventilation. Exhaust fumes are
very dangerous and can cause permanent injury
or death.
Use extreme care when operating on slopes to
maintain equipment stability.
Keep the tractor in gear when traveling downhill.
Install tractor wheel weights to increase stability
when operating on slopes. Consult your
SHIBAURA Dealer on ballasting requirements for
your equipment.
Always bring the tractor to a complete stop,
lower the mower deck to ground contact,
disengage power to the mower, set the parking
brake, shut off the engine and remove the key
before dismounting from the tractor.
NEVER park the tractor on an incline.
SERVICING THE MOWER
Keep the tractor and mower clean. Grease, dry
debris and grass buildup can cause fires,
damaging the equipment and causing serious
injury to yourself or others.
Check for and replace or repair missing, loose,
or damaged parts on the mower. A defective
mower could cause injury to another operator
who is unaware of a potential problem.
To avoid injury, do not clean, adjust, unclog, or
service the mower when the engine is running.
Do not work under the raised mower deck unless
it is tipped rearward and retained by both mower
service links, or is securely supported by a
suitable hoist, floor jack and jack stands.
Make sure all hoists, floor jacks and jack stands
are in good working order and have sufficient
capacity to support the elevated equipment
before repair, adjustment, or lubrication of the
tractor or front mounted mower.
Inspect the mowing blade retainer bolts and top
spindle nuts daily, or whenever a blade has been
removed. Blade bolt torque is 110 to 130 ft. lbs.
(1 50-177 Nm) and pulley nut torque is 80 ft. lbs.
(109 Nm) These fasteners have right hand
threads.
To avoid injury when handling mowing blades,
wear leather gloves, or wrap the blades in the
area where they will be held with heavy cloth or
other protective material.
Do not modify or alter or permit anyone else to
modify or alter the front mount mower, or any of
its components or operating functions. If in doubt
on modifications, consult your SHIBAURA Dealer

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
GENERAL INFORMATION
The safe operation of the tractor and mower is
the responsibility of the operator. The operator
MUST be familiar with tractor and mower
controls, how they work and all Safety
Precautions BEFORE starting operation. The
MC72RD (887739) Mower is designed to be
used as a finish cut lawn mower.
IMPORTANT
To avoid damage to the mower, re-torque ALL
fastening spindle pulley retaining nuts after the
first hour of mowing operation.
CAUTION: INSPECT THE MOWING
BLADE RETAINER BOLTS AND SPINDLE
NUTS DAILY, OR WHENEVER A BLADE HAS
BEEN REMOVED. BLADE BOLT TORQUE 15
110 TO 130 ft. lbs. (150-177 Nm) AND PULLEY
NUT TORQUE IS 80 ft. lbs. (109 Nm). THESE
FASTENERS HAVE RIGHT HAND THREADS.
TIPS FOR EFFICIENT MOWING
Blade sharpness affects the appearance of the
mowed lawn. A dull or damaged blade will cause
grass to appear torn or beaten off rather than cut
cleanly. Mowing blades should be checked
regularly and kept sharp to ensure the best lawn
appearance.
Tractor engine speed while mowing should be at
maximum rate RPM. This will ensure proper
blade speed for effective cutting and discharge of
grass clippings.
Travel speed greatly effects mowing
performance. The operator must use his own
best judgment for the ground speed required for
encountered mowing conditions. Always use a
lower tractor transmission speed for slower
mowing, rather than lowering engine RPM.
WARNING: DO NOT PERMIT ANYONE
BUT THEOPERATOR TO RIDE ON THE
TRACTOR OR MOWER. THERE IS NO SAFE
PLACE ON THIS EQUIPMENT FOR
PASSENGERS.
Mow often. Do not wait for the grass to get too
tall. Short grass clippings will disperse better and
deteriorate faster.
A CAUTION: CLEAR THE AREA OF
ALL VISIBLE DEBRIS BEFORE BEGINNING
MOWING OPERATIONS.
Mowing areas with tall grass or weeds may
require cutting at 4.72 inches (maximum) height
of cut. After mowing once, re-cut the entire area
with the mower reset to the desired final height of
cut.
When cutting along sidewalks, driveways, etc., it
is advisable to mow with the discharge directed
away from these areas for 2 or 3 passes. This
will keep grass clippings off of these areas.
WARNING:
ALWAYS KEEP MOWER DISCHARGE
DIRECTED AWAY FROM PEOPLE OR
ANIMALS WHICH COULD BE INJURED
AND AWAY FROM OBJECTS THAT COULD BE
DAMAGED BY DEBRIS THROWN BY THE
MOWER BLADES.
The gauge wheels on either side of the front of
the mowing deck serve as convenient mowing
guides. When mowing, position the mower so the
gauge wheel overlaps the edge of the strip
previously cut. This will assure full mowing
coverage.
CAUTION: MOW ONLY DURING
DAYLIGHT HOURS OR WHEN THE AREA IS
WELL LIT ARTIFICIALLY.
WARNING: TO AVOID THE
POSSIBILITY OF INJURY FROM FLYING
DEBRIS, NEVER OPERATE THE MOWER IN
THE RAISED TRANSPORT POSITION.
When transporting, always disengage the power
to the mower.
7
CUTTING HEIGHTS
This mower can be adjusted to mow from 1.18
inches to 4.72 inches (30 to 120 mm) height of
cut. Grass mowing height should be determined
by encountered conditions and personal
preference.
The following recommendations are provided as
a guide for cutting height selection.
Lawns = 1.18 to 3” (30-76mm)
Field Cutting = 3” to 4.72” (76-120 mm)
To change the height of cut it is necessary to
adjust the gauge wheels and the rear lift rods
with the unit parked on a driveway, garage floor
or similar flat and level surface.
GAUGE WHEEL ADJUSTMENT
1. Start the tractor engine and raise the mower
by pulling rearward on the hydraulic control lever.
2. Shut off the engine, remove the key and set
the tractor parking brake.
3. After determining the desired cutting height, as
shown on the chart above (duplicated as a label)
on the mower deck), remove the lock pin from
one of the front wheel spindles. Lower spindle
shaft until C-Spacers (1) can be slid over the
relief area of spindle shaft. Install the number of
C-Spacers needed to acquire desired cutting
height. Slide shaft up and install remainder of C-
Spacers, washer and lock pin to top of shaft.
Repeat the adjustment on second gauge wheel.
4. To adjust rear gauge wheels, use the chart
shown across or label on the mower deck to
determine desired cutting height. Remove wire
ring and clevis pin (2) from one of the gauge
wheels. Place the spindle shaft in line with the
appropriate cross hole, reinstall the clevis pin
and wire ring. Repeat the adjustment on the
second rear gauge wheel.
8
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS - Continued
REAR LIFT LINK ADJUSTMENT
1, Lower the mower by pushing the hydraulic
control lever forward with the engine shut off.
2. Select the correct clevis pin position for the
height of cut desired and pin the link rod.
3. Loosen the jam nut (1) on the rod and block.
Using a pin, or similar tool, punch through one of
the holes in the rod, adjust the link rod so the
rear gauge wheels are 118 off the ground.
Tighten the jam nut against the block.
UNEVEN TERRAIN
Pre-plan mowing over uneven terrain so the
grass will be dry, minimizing wheel slippage and
spinning which will damage the turf.
WARNING: TO AVOID LOSS OF
CONTROL, AND TO PREVENT
OVERTURNING THE TRACTOR AND MOWER,
ALWAYS MOW UP AND DOWN SLOPES,
NEVER ACROSS. DO NOT OPERATE ON
STEEP SLOPES.
Pass diagonally through sharp dips. Avoid sharp
drop-offs completely to prevent “hanging-up” the
tractor and mower.
WARNING: INSTALL TRACTOR WHEEL
WEIGHTS TO INCREASE STABILITY WHEN
OPERATING ON SLOPES. CONSULT YOUR
SHIBAURA DEALER ON BALLAST/NC
REQUIREMENTS FOR YOUR EQUIPMENT
CAUTION: KEEP THE TRACTOR IN
GEAR WHEN TRAVELING DOWNHILL.
Before mowing, check the area to determine the
best procedure. Consider the grass type and
height and the type of uneven terrain on which
the mowing is to take place.
DANGER: ALWAYS USE AN
APPROVED ROLL OVER PROTECTIVE
STRUCTURE (ROPS) AND SEAT BELT FOR
SAFE OPERATION. OVERTURNING A
TRACTOR WITHOUT A ROPS CAN RESULT IN
SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. IF YOUR
TRACTOR IS NOT EQUIPPED WITH A ROPS
AND SEAT BELT SEE YOUR SHIBAURA
DEALER.
WARNING: ALWAYS WEAR THE SEAT
BELT ON ROPS EQUIPPED TRACTORS. DO
NOT USE A SEAT BELT IF THE TRACTOR
ROPS HAS BEEN REMOVED.
Avoid sudden starts and stops while traveling up
or down hill and slow the ground speed while
turning.
GRASS DISCHARGE
This mower deck has been designed to provide
maximum air flow for an even discharge of grass
clippings. When mowing tall or lush grasses,
select a lower tractor transmission speed or
reduce the width of cut for the best discharge
efficiency.
9
WARNING: NEVER OPERATE THE MOWER WITH THE DISCHARGE DEFLECTOR IN THE
RAISED POSIT/ON.
For the best lawn appearance, do not mow when the grass is wet or heavy with dew. Wet grass could
plug the discharge area of the mower creating an unnatural load through the blades and spindles
possibly damaging the mower deck belt. Wet grass will also leave unsightly dumps on the lawn.
If the mower should become clogged, back the unit out of the uncut grass. If the mower will not clear
itself, raise the deck to the maintenance position (see page 12 for procedure), shut off the engine, set
the parking brake and clean the bottom of the deck with a scraper.
WARNING: THE OPERATOR SHOULD NEVER LEAVE THE TRACTOR SEAT WITH THE
MOWER BLADES ROTATING, WITH THE TRACTOR IN MOTION OR WHEN THE TRACTOR
ENGINE IS RUNNING.
In medium and heavy cutting conditions, mow so the discharged clippings will be AWAY from uncut
grass. In light cutting, discharged clippings can be directed onto the uncut grass allowing them to be
recut finer, leaving the lawn almost free of unsightly clippings.
ADJUSTING THE WEIGHT TRANSFER VALVE
The Weight Transfer Valve is used to transfer the mower weight to the tractor to reduce the possibility
of turf gouging and scalping.
Adjustment of the weight transfer valve should be accomplished as follows:
1. With the tractor engine running at rated
RPM, push the hydraulic control forward into
the float position.
2. Turn the Weight Transfer Valve knob (1)
clockwise until the mower lifts off of the ground.
3. Turn the knob (1) counterclockwise slowly
until the mower front gauge wheels touch the
ground. Turn the knob (1) another 1/4 turn
counterclockwise.
4. Operate the mower on uneven terrain at a
desired ground travel speed and observe the
front gauge wheels. The Gauge wheels should
be following the contour of the ground.
If not,
5. Turn the knob (1) counterclockwise 1/4 turn
at a time until the gauge wheels follow the
grounds contour.

SCHEDULE
Lubrication
Before operating the MC60RD (887738) or
MC72RD (887739) mower, make sure it has
been properly lubricated according to the
illustrated chart below.
Always wipe the fitting to be lubricated with a
clean cloth before using a grease gun. Dirt
injected thru the fitting will damage closely
machined parts.
Use an SAE multipurpose lithium base grease on
all lube locations shown. Do not let excess
grease buildup on or around parts, especially
when the mower is used in sandy areas.
Gearbox Oil
The Gearbox oil level should be even with the
bottom edge of the filler plug hole. Make sure the
cutter is level and fill with the following grease or
oil.
NH #9821006 grease, or any “pour” consistency
EP grease.
Tire Pressures
Front Tractor Tires 10 psi (0.7 kg/cm)

BLADE REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
WARNING:
DO NOT WORK UNDER THE RAISED
MOWER DECK UNLESS IT IS TIPPED
REARWARD AND RETAINED BY BOTH
MOWER SERVICE LINKS, OR IS
SECURELY SUPPORTED BY A SUITABLE
HOIST FLOOR JACK AND JACKSTANDS.
Remove mower blades for sharpening and/or
replacement as follows. Raise the mower deck to
the maintenance position. See instructions on
page 12.
SERVICE NOTE:
Use a spanner wrench, PIN FNH24RT96, in the
spindle pulley holes to hold the spindle shaft
while loosening or torquing blade and spindle
pulley fasteners.
When installing the blade components, make
sure the blade is installed with the curved edge
“sail” toward the deck bottom.
Using the spanner wrench, torque the blade
bolts to 110-130 ft. lbs. (150-177 Nm). Spindle
pulley nut torque is 80 ft. lbs. (109 Nm)
IMPORTANT:
Check and re-torque the blade and spindle pulley
fasteners after the 1st hour of mower operation,
and daily thereafter.
BLADE SHARPENING
Inspect the blades before each use to be sure
they are properly installed and are in good
condition. Replace any blade that is bent,
excessively nicked or worn, or shows signs of
other damage. Use only genuine SHIBAURA
blades on this mower.
WARNING: TO AVOID INJURY WHEN
HANDLING BLADES, WEAR LEATHER
GLOVES, OR WRAP THE BLADES IN THE
AREA WHERE THEY WILL BE HELD WITH
HEAVY CLOTH OR OTHER PROTECTIVE
MATERIAL.
IMPORTANT:
When sharpening blades, remove the same
amount of material from each blade to maintain
balance. Unbalanced blades will cause
excessive vibration which could damage gearbox
and mower components.
Sharpen the blades following the original pattern
illustrated above. If using a grinder or cutting
disc, use care so the cutting edge does not get
too hot from friction causing it to lose its heat
treat. Do not sharpen to a razor edge! Leave a
1/32 inch edge as shown.
Check the blade for balance by placing a
horizontal rod through the blade center hole. The
heavy side of the blade will drop down. Sharpen
on the heavy side until the blade remains
balanced on the rod.

(109 N-m). Re-torque these fasteners after one
hour of mower operation and daily thereafter.
5. Lubricate the spindle with a high quality
multipurpose grease until the grease begins to
vent from around the UPPER seal.
IMPORTANT.
The rebuilt spindle should be greased again after
15 minutes of operation to ensure that air
pockets in the spindle housing have been fully
purged
6. Reinstall the mower deck to the tractor
RECONDITIONING THE DRIVELINE
DRIVELINE DISASSEMBLY
1. Disconnect the rear half of the driveline from
the tractor PTO shaft, slide it out of the front half
and lay it aside.
2. Loosen the two bolts that retain the driveline
shield to the mower gearbox and pivot it upward
out of the way.
3. Remove the fastener through the driveline
yoke, remove the snap ring from the gearbox
input shaft, and remove the front half of the
driveline from the mower.

4. Clamp the front half yoke securely in a belt
vise with jaws that are lined with wood board
brass or copper faces, etc. Remove the exterior
snap ring from inside the lock collar. Slide
collar and spring off of the yoke. THE BALLS
WILL FALL OUT! Use care so they a not lost.
5. Tear down the remaining driveline as
necessary. Lay the U-joints aside and wash all
other parts with clean solvent. Inspect and
replace the U-joint or any other item that is badly
worn or damaged

DRIVELINE REASSEMBLY
Use care when installing the U-joint bearing cups
so the needle bearings remain in place. It is
advisable to smear a light coating of heavy
grease into the cups to help retain the needle
bearings. If the cup set, on either side of the
cross, will not go in enough for the snap rings to
be installed, it usually indicates one or more
needles fell and are in the bottom of the cup
restricting installation.
NOTE:
The blind splines will have to be aligned as
follows as the shaft is put back together.
IMPORTANT
There is a blind spline between the rear and front
half of the driveline. Align the two pinched male
splines on the mower, half of the driveline with
the open female spline in the tractor half and
slide together. The female open spline is 1800
around the shaft from the grease fitting.
Use an SAE multipurpose lithium base grease
and lubricate all three fittings on the driveline
before reinstallation.
Reassembly and reinstallation on the mower is a
reverse order of disassembly instructions.
GEARBOX REBUILDING
NOTE:
This gearbox is not adjustable. If backlash or
rolling torque is considered excessive, the
gearbox should be rebuilt or replaced.
GEARBOX DISASSEMBLY
Prepare the mower for gearbox removal by
following all instructions under Belt Replacement
on page 14.
1. Remove all four bolts retaining the gearbox
bracket to the top of the deck and remove the
gearbox bracket assembly.
2. Remove the brackets and shield from the
gearbox, remove both pipe plugs, lay the box on
one side and drain all old oil.
3. Remove all 9 socket head bolts securing the
gearbox halves together. Tap the seam with a
soft wood or plastic hammer to break the seal
and split the box halves.
4. Disassemble the gearbox, remove sealer from
both case halves, wash parts in a clean solvent
and inspect for signs of wear or damage.
GEARBOX REASSEMBLY
1. Replace needed parts, always using NEW
SEALS.
Gearbox . Exploded View
2. Apply a 1/16 inch (1.6 mm) bead of liquid
gasket material (Locktite® 504 or 515 or
equivalent) to the flat surface of the bottom case
half only.
IMPORTANT
DO NOT allow liquid gasket material to get into
the seal recesses in the housing.

3. Place the case halves together, insert and torque the socket head bolts to 15-20 ft. lbs. (20-2
Lightly tap the shaft ends with a soft hammer to seat the bearings.
4. Position the gearbox in an upright position, as it will be on the mower, and fill it with grease shown
on the lube schedule on page 10.
5. Position the belt pulley and collect hub (flush with the bottom of the output shaft) and alternate the
1/4 hub bolts until 7-9 ft. lbs. (9-12 Nm) of torque is reached.
6. Reinstall the gearbox brackets and driveline shield to the gearbox and reinstall the gearbox
assembly to the mower deck.
Reassembly and reinstallation on the mower is a reverse order of disassembly instructions.
DRIVELINE SHEAR BOLT & SNAP RING
The driveline between the tractor and mower
gearbox is protected by a 3/8-16 x 2 Hex Skt.
Head GRADE 5 shear bolt (1). Do not use a
Grade 2 bolt as it may shear too frequently. Also
do not use a Grade B bolt as it may not shear
when necessary causing damage to the gearbox
or tractor PTO. Any time a shear bolt
breaks, the snap ring (2) located on the gearbox
input shaft, should be checked, if is it is not
properly located, appears damaged, or is
completely missing, it MUST BE REPLACED.
Align the shear bolt hole in the yoke, with the
cross hole in the input shaft, and install a new
shear bolt and locknut. The locknut should be
snug against the yoke, tight enough to allow the
bolt to turn easily with a slight twist with a
wrench.
SPECIAL SHEAR BOLT, PART #AU8968020
lMPORTANT.
Make sure the snap ring is in place as a missing snap ring will allow the shaft to come off when the
shear bolt breaks, severely damaging mower and tractor
