EQUIPMENT
DESCRIPTION
This generator is a gaseous-fueled, engine driven, revolving
field, alternating current (AC) air-cooled generator. It is
designed to supply electrical power to the Generac Power
Transfer System in the event of a utility power outage. It
may also be used as a stand-alone generator for operating
compatible electrical lighting, appliance, tool and motor
loads. This manual contains information for a generator
that operates 120 and/or 240 Volt AC, single phase, 60 Hz
devices that require up to 6,000 watts (6.0 kW) of power
that pull up to 50 Amps at 120 Volts or 25 Amps at
240 Volts.
CAUTION! Do Not exceed the generator’s
wattage/amperage capacity. Review “Don’t Overload
the Generator” on page 11.
The 6,000 watt Mobile Backup Power System has the
following features:
Three large pneumatic wheels for easy movement
120/240 Volt, 30 Amp locking receptacle
Two 120 Volt, 20 Amp receptacles
Low Oil Shutdown: Automatically shuts down the engine
if oil drops below safe operating pressure.
Highly reliable, safe, and convenient natural gas/propane
quick disconnect fittings
The generator’s revolving field is driven at about
3600 rpm by a Generac Power Systems electric start
Natural Gas/LP engine.
Load Manager™ Power Transfer System
DANGER!
Do Not tamper with engine governed
speed. High operating speeds are dangerous and
increase risk of personal injury or damage to
equipment. The generator supplies correct rated
frequency and voltage only when running at proper
governed speed. Incorrect frequency and/or voltage
can damage some connected electrical loads.
Operating at excessively low speeds imposes a
heavy load. When adequate engine power is not
available engine life may be shortened.
SAFETY RULES
This generator was designed and manufactured for specific
applications. Do Not attempt to modify the unit or use it
for any application it was not designed for. If you have any
questions about your generator’s application, ask your
dealer or consult the factory.
The manufacturer could not possibly anticipate every
circumstance that might involve a hazard. For that reason
warnings in the manual and warnings on tags or decals
affixed to the unit are not all–inclusive. If you intend to
handle, operate or service the unit by a procedure or
method not specifically recommended by the manufacturer,
first make sure that such a procedure or method will not
render this equipment unsafe or pose a threat to you and
others.
Read this manual carefully and become familiar
with your generator set. Know its applications, its
limitations and any hazards involved.
DANGER! Generator exhaust gases contain
DEADLY carbon monoxide gas. If breathed
in sufficient concentrations, carbon monoxide
can cause unconsciousness or death. Operate
this equipment outdoors where adequate
ventilation is available.
DANGER! You must isolate the generator from
the electric utility with the supplied manual Power
Transfer System when this unit is used for backup
power. Failure to isolate the generator from
the power utility may result in injury or
death to electric utility workers and damage
to the generator due to a backfeed of electrical
energy. Whenever unit is providing backup power,
the electric utility must be notified.
The Emission Control System for this system is warranted
for standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency.
For warranty information, refer to the engine owner’s
manual.
The engine exhaust from this product contains
chemicals known to the State of California to
cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive
harm.

The generator produces a very powerful voltage that can
cause serious injury or death by electrocution. Never
touch bare wires or receptacles. Never permit a child
or any unqualified person to operate the generator.
Never handle any kind of electrical cord or device while
standing in water, while barefoot or while hands or feet
are wet.
Use a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) in any damp
or highly conductive area (such as metal decking or steel
work).
Never use worn, bare, frayed or otherwise damaged
electrical cords with the generator.
Natural Gas and Liquefied Petroleum is highly
FLAMMABLE and EXPLOSIVE. Never allow
smoking, open flames, sparks or heat in the
vicinity while handling these fuels. Comply with all
laws regulating storage and handling of gaseous fuels.
The unit requires an adequate flow of cooling air for its
continued proper operation. Never operate the unit
inside any room or enclosure where the free flow of
cooling air into and out of the unit might be obstructed.
Allow at least 2 feet of clearance on all sides of
generator or you could damage the unit.
Never start or stop the unit with electrical loads
connected to receptacles AND with the connected
devices turned ON. Start the engine and let it stabilize
before connecting any electrical loads. Disconnect all
electrical loads before shutting down the generator.
Do Not insert any object through the unit’s cooling slots
or damage to you or the unit could occur.
Never operate the generator:
in rain; in any enclosed compartment; when connected
electrical devices overheat; if electrical output is lost; if
engine or generator sparks; if flame or smoke is
observed while unit is running; if unit vibrates excessively.
GROUNDING THE
GENERATOR
The National Electrical Code requires that the frame and
external electrically conductive parts of this generator be
properly connected to an approved earth ground. Local
electrical codes may also require proper grounding of the
unit. Whenever the unit is connected to the system’s
properly installed power inlet box, the generator is
automatically connected to the building’s grounding system.
IMPORTANT: When operating the unit as a stand-alone
generator, the unit should
be connected to a grounding
rod.
Properly grounding the generator helps prevent electrical
shock if a ground fault condition exists in the generator or
in connected electrical devices. Proper grounding also helps
dissipate static electricity, which often builds up in
ungrounded devices.
A GROUNDING WING NUT is provided (Figure 1) to
make the grounding attachment.
Connecting a No. 12 AWG (American Wire Gauge)
stranded copper wire to the grounding wing nut and to an
earth–driven copper or brass grounding rod (electrode)
provides adequate protection against electrical shock.
CAUTION! Do Not connect the unit to a
grounding rod at the same time it is connected to
the building’s power inlet box.

120 Volt AC, 20 Amp Receptacle — May be used to
supply electrical power for the operation of 120 Volt AC,
20 Amp, single phase, 60 Hz electrical lighting, appliance,
tool and motor loads.
120/240 Volt AC, 30 Amp Locking Receptacle
May be used to supply electrical power directly to the
Power Transfer System or for the operation of 120 and/or
240 Volt AC, 30 Amp, single phase, 60 Hz electrical
lighting, appliance, tool and motor loads.
Air Cleaner — Limits the amount of dirt and dust drawn
into the engine.
Circuit Breaker (AC) — The 20 Amp receptacle is
provided with a "push to reset" circuit breaker to protect
the generator against electrical overload.
DC Float Charger Jack — Plug the battery float charger
into this jack and into a building wall outlet to provide a
trickle charge during storage.
Engine STOP-RUN-START Switch - Used to start the
engine. Set switch to "STOP" to turn off engine.
Fuel Quick-Connect Fitting - Connect the unit to the
gaseous fuel supply to this convenient connector.
Grounding Wing Nut — (Not shown, see page 3)
Hour Meter — The hour meter records the total
number of hours the generator has been running and is
used to schedule maintenance tasks.
Light — The light is ON whenever the engine start switch
is in the “RUN” position. It provides light to help connect
the generator to the power inlet box safely.
Main Circuit Breaker — Used to disconnect power
from the unit’s 30 Amp receptacle.
Spark Arrestor Muffler — Exhaust muffler lowers
engine noise and is equipped with a spark arrester screen.

INSTALL WHEEL KIT
NOTE: Wheel kit is not for over-the-road use.
To install the wheel kit you need the following tools:
Socket wrench with 1/2" or 13mm sockets
Phillips head screwdriver
Install wheel kit as follows: (See Figure 2)
Place the generator on a hard flat surface. Place
temporary blocks beneath the cradle.
Slide the long axle through the cradle brackets and add
one spacer on each protruding end of the axle.
Slide a wheel on each end of the axle and secure it with
a washer and a retaining pin.
NOTE: Make sure wheel air inflation valve is outward.
Slide the handle release pin lanyard loop onto the pivot
assembly as shown and press on end caps.
Assemble and attach the front wheel assembly to the
cradle using hardware shown.
Remove the temporary blocks.
Attach three spring clips to the generator using pre-
threaded self drilling screws and recess bumpers at
locations shown.
Attach the handle onto the front wheel assembly using
the handle release pin or affix the handle to the side of
the generator using the spring clips.
Check that all fasteners are secure.

INSTALLING NEGATIVE
BATTERY CABLE
For shipping purposes, the negative battery cable is not
connected to the battery.
Install the battery cable as follows:
Locate the battery (see Figure 3).
Connect the black battery cable to the negative (–)
terminal on battery using the supplied fasteners.

Operational Note
IMPORTANT: The other components of this Beacon
Mobile Backup Power System, namely the Power Transfer
System and the building’s gaseous fuel lines, must be
installed by trained and authorized (licensed) installers. The
building owner/occupant will be responsible for wheeling
the generator to its operating location, making the fuel and
electrical connections, then starting the generator.
This manual describes only the generator setup and
operation. Refer to the engine owner’s manual for
questions regarding the engine. Refer to the Installation
Manual (Generac part number B5843) and the Power
Transfer System owner’s manual (Generac part number
B4628) for additional installation and operational details.
NOTE: This generator is supplied from the factory set up
and calibrated for Natural Gas. If it is necessary to switch
the fuel to liquefied petroleum (LP) gas, refer to
“Reconfiguring Fuel System”, beginning on page 12.

BEFORE STARTING THE
ENGINE
Add Oil
WARNING! Any attempt to crank or start the
engine before it has been properly filled with oil
may result in an engine failure.
Place generator on a level surface.
Follow Oil Fill procedure described in the engine owner’s
manual using the supplied oil.
CAUTION! The generator’s engine must be
‘broken-in’, as described in the engine owner’s
manual. The unit is supplied with an organic break-
in oil. You MUST replace the break-in oil after the
break-in process with synthetic API SJ SAE 5W-
30 oil and use only synthetic oil thereafter.
Fuel Considerations
It is recommend that fuels used with this system have a Btu
content of at least 1,000 Btus per cubic foot for natural
gas; or at least 2,520 Btus per cubic foot for LP gas. Ask
your fuel supplier for the Btu content of your fuel.
The approximate amount of fuel the unit consumes at
100% rated load is shown below. Actual fuel consumption
may vary depending on the Btu content of the fuel, applied
load, ambient conditions, engine conditions, etc.

OPERATING THE
GENERATOR
CAUTION! Never start or stop the engine with
electrical loads connected to the receptacles AND
with the Main circuit breaker turned ON.
DANGER! Breathing Hazard! Never run engine
indoors or in enclosed poorly ventilated areas.
Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an
odorless and deadly gas.
WARNING! Burn Hazard! Temperature of
muffler and nearby areas may exceed 150°F (65°C).
Do Not touch these areas.
When you want to use the generator, disconnect the DC
Float Charger from the unit and from the wall socket.
Store the DC Float Charger in a convenient location.
Rotate the unit’s STOP-RUN-START switch to the RUN
position. This will provide illumination for safely moving
and connecting the unit to the fuel and power inlet box
connectors.
NOTE: The control panel light is ON whenever the unit’s
STOP-RUN-START switch is in the RUN position. This will
alert the operator that the fuel shutoff valve is also open
and that the battery is being drained. Always have the
STOP-RUN-START switch in the STOP position whenever
the unit is not being used or the battery will be depleted.
Position the unit at its prepared location. The wheels
may need to be blocked to avoid movement.

Connect to Fuel Supply
DANGER! NEVER light a cigarette or smoke
when connecting or disconnecting the fuel lines.
Wipe off the free end of the flexible fuel hose with a
clean rag. Disengage the quick connect dust cap.
Wipe off the building’s fuel quick connect fitting.
Disengage the quick connect dust cap.
Pull back the sleeve on the quick-connect fitting
(Figure 4) and insert the hose fitting into it.
Making sure the hose fitting is fully inserted, move the
sleeve so that the hose is locked into the fitting’s socket.
Test the connection with a short tug on the hose. The
hose should remain connected to the quick connect
fitting.
Starting the Engine
Always disconnect all electrical loads from unit before
starting the engine.
Open the fuel shut–off valve on the building by rotating it
90° clockwise. A typical fuel bib is shown in Figure 5.
Your installation may differ.
In order to purge the fuel hose of air and to avoid
damaging the engine’s starter, it is necessary to ‘cycle’ the
engine start, as follows:
1. Rotate and hold the engine STOP-RUN-START
switch in the START position for ten seconds.
2. Release the STOP-RUN-START switch (which
returns to the RUN position) and wait for ten
seconds.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the engine starts.
NOTE: It may take five or more ‘start cycles’ to ensure an
adequate fuel flow, depending on ambient temperature,
humidity, and other conditions.
As soon as the engine starts, release engine STOP-RUN-
START switch. It should return to the RUN position and
the engine should continue to run.
NOTE: If the engine fails to start or run, check for proper
oil level in crankcase. The unit is equipped with a low oil
shutdown system. See engine owner’s manual for
information regarding the low oil shutdown system. Also
check to see if another fuel line shutoff is present inside
the building.

Connecting Electrical Loads
Let engine stabilize and warm up for 3 to 5 minutes after
starting.
Connect the unit to the power inlet box, following the
connection instructions given in the Transfer Box
owner’s manual. Or plug in and turn on the desired
120 and/or 240 Volt AC, single phase, 60 Hertz electrical
loads.
Do Not connect 240 Volt loads to the 120 Volt
receptacles.
Do Not connect 3-phase loads to the generator.
Do Not connect 50 Hz loads to the generator.
DO NOT OVERLOAD THE GENERATOR. When
not used with the Power Transfer System, the total
electrical load should not be greater than the rated
wattage/amperage capacity of the generator. See “Don’t
Overload the Generator” on page 11.
Stopping the Engine
Disconnect all electrical loads from generator panel
receptacles. Never start or stop engine with electrical
devices plugged in and turned on.
Let engine run at no–load for two minutes to stabilize
the unit’s internal temperatures.
Rotate engine STOP-RUN-START switch to STOP
position. The control panel light should extinguish.
NOTE: Always have the STOP-RUN-START switch in the
STOP position whenever the unit is not being used or the
battery will be depleted.
Rotate the fuel bib shut–off valve 90° counter-clockwise
to close the valve.
Disconnect fuel hose from quick-connect fitting, cover
the fuel hose fitting with its dust cap, and store the hose
on the unit’s hose wrap.
Re-engage the dust cap onto the building’s quick connect
fitting.
Move the unit to its storage location. Connect the DC
Float Charger to the control panel connector and to a
convenient 120 Volt AC wall socket.
NOTE: When connected, the DC Float Charger provides
a trickle charge to the unit’s battery so that plenty of
starting power is available to start the unit. If the unit is
not going to be used for an extended period, please review
“Storage” on page 14.
CONTROL PANEL
120 Volt AC, 20 Amp Receptacles
Each receptacle socket (Figure 6) is protected against
overload by a 20 Amp, push–to–reset circuit breaker.
Use each socket to operate 120 Volt AC, single phase, 60
Hz electrical loads requiring up to 2,400 watts (2.4 kW) at
20 Amps of current. Use cord sets that are rated for
125 Volt AC loads at 20 Amps (or greater).

Light
A light is provided on the control panel to assist
connecting the unit to fuel and to the power inlet box at
night. The light is ON whenever the engine STOP-RUN-
START switch is in the RUN position. This serves to alert
the operator that even though the unit’s engine may not be
running, the unit’s electrical fuel solenoid is open and the
battery is being depleted.
120/240 Volt AC, 30 Amp Locking
Receptacle
Use a NEMA L14–30 plug with this receptacle. Connect a
4–wire cord set rated for 250 Volt AC loads at 30 Amps
(Figure 7). You can use the same 4–wire cord for a
120 Volt load.
This receptacle powers 120/240 Volt AC, 60 Hz, single
phase loads requiring up to 3,600 watts of power at
30 Amps for 120 Volts; 6,000 watts of power (6.0 kW) at
25 Amps for 240 Volts. The outlet is protected by a
double-pole 30 Amp Main circuit breaker.
Use this receptacle to connect the unit to the power inlet
box with the supplied power cable, as described in the
Power Transfer System owner’s manual.
DC Float Charger Jack
Use this jack with the provided battery charger to keep the
generator battery charged and ready for use:
Plug battery charger into a building 120 Volt AC wall
socket and the unit’s “12V DC Float Charger” jack.
Unplug the charger completely when generator is in
operation.
Hour Meter
The hour meter operates whenever the unit’s engine runs.
Use the hour meter to plan service tasks described in the
engine owner’s manual.

DON’T OVERLOAD THE
GENERATOR
NOTE: Refer to this section ONLY when you are
using the generator independent of the Power
Transfer System.
Refer to the Power Transfer System owner’s manual when
operating the unit connected to the power inlet box.
There you will find the Power Transfer System installation
plan. The managed circuits should all be clearly marked on
the power distribution panels. Ask your system installer to
review load management techniques with you.
Overloading a generator in excess of its rated wattage
capacity can result in damage to the generator and/or
connected electrical devices. Observe the following to
prevent overloading the unit:
Add up the total wattage of all electrical devices to be
connected at one time. This total should NOT be
greater than the generator’s wattage capacity.
The rated wattage of lights can be taken from wattage
listed on the light bulbs. The rated wattage of tools,
appliances and motors can usually be found on a data
plate or decal affixed to the device. Use Figure 8 as a
general reference.
If the appliance, tool or motor does not give wattage,
multiply 120 Volts times ampere rating to determine
watts (volts x amps = watts).
Some electric motors, such as induction types, require
about three times more watts of power for starting than
for running. This surge of power lasts for only a few
seconds when starting such motors. Be sure you allow
for this high starting wattage when selecting electrical
devices to connect to your generator. First figure the
watts needed to start the largest motor. Add to that
figure the running watts of all other connected loads.

RECONFIGURING THE
FUEL SYSTEM
The unit is supplied from the factory calibrated for and
ready to run on Natural Gas. If it is necessary to switch to
liquefied petroleum (LP) gas fuel, perform the following:
LP Gas Setup
1. Locate the fuel load block. It is mounted directly on
top of the secondary pressure regulator inside the
unit. Note that the load block openings are identified
with raised 'NG' and 'LP' letters, as shown in Figure 9.
2. Remove the carburetor fuel hose from the brass
barbed fitting. Do Not move or adjust the Natural
Gas Adjustment Knob.
3. Remove the barbed fitting and the pipe plug from the
fuel load block.
4. Apply pipe dope to the plug and install it into the fuel
load block opening labeled 'NG'.
5. Apply pipe dope to the barbed fitting and install it into
the fuel load block opening labeled 'LP'.
6. Refit the hose to the barbed fitting.
7. Connect and turn on the gas supply to the unit.
Thoroughly test for and repair any gas leaks.
LP gas conversion is now complete. Figure 9 also depicts
LP fuel supply connections to the fuel load block.
Natural Gas Setup
If a unit has been run with LP gas and it becomes necessary
to re-convert it to Natural Gas, perform the following:
1. Locate the fuel load block. It is mounted directly on
top of the secondary pressure regulator inside the
unit. Note that the load block openings are identified
with raised 'NG' and 'LP' letters, as shown in
Figure 10.
2. Remove the carburetor fuel hose from the brass
barbed fitting.
3. Remove the barbed fitting and the pipe plug from the
fuel load block.
4. Apply pipe dope to the plug and install it into the fuel
load block opening labeled 'LP'.
5. Apply pipe dope to the barbed fitting and install it into
the fuel load block opening labeled 'NG'.
6. Refit the hose to the barbed fitting. The properly-
configured Natural Gas configuration is shown in
Figure 10.
7. Connect and turn on the gas supply to the unit.
Thoroughly test for and repair any gas leaks.
8. Perform the procedure described in “Adjusting the
Load Block”.

Adjusting the Load Block
The fuel load block is adjusted to compensate for the
varying combustion properties found in our national natural
gas distribution system, as follows:
1. Connect an AC frequency meter across the 240 Volt
AC output of the unit. Make sure the unit's Main
circuit breaker is ON and the unit is connected to the
building’s power inlet box.
2. Apply a full 6,000 watt load to the unit through the
Power Transfer System.
3. Observe the frequency meter as you gently turn the
slotted knob on the fuel load block clockwise and note
that the AC frequency changes.
4. Adjust the slotted knob clockwise or counterclockwise
until the AC frequency is at its peak value, typically
58 to 59 Hz.
5. Remove the frequency meter and turn the unit's Main
circuit breaker OFF.
6. Let the unit run at idle for a few minutes, then turn it
OFF.
Natural Gas re-conversion is now complete.
GENERAL MAINTENANCE
RECOMMENDATIONS
The Owner/Operator is responsible for making sure that
all periodic maintenance tasks are completed on a timely
basis; that all discrepancies are corrected; and that the unit
is kept clean and properly stored. Never operate a
damaged or defective generator.

maintenance instructions.
Generator Maintenance
Generator maintenance consists of keeping the unit clean
and dry. Operate and store the unit in a clean dry
environment where it will not be exposed to excessive
dust, dirt, moisture or any corrosive vapors. Cooling air
slots in the generator must not become clogged with snow,
leaves or any other foreign material.

NOTE: Do Not use a garden hose to clean generator.
Water can enter engine fuel system and cause problems. In
addition, if water enters generator through cooling air
slots, some of the water will be retained in voids and
cracks of the rotor and stator winding insulation. Water
and dirt buildup on the generator internal windings will
eventually decrease the insulation resistance of these
windings.
To Clean the Generator
Use a damp cloth to wipe exterior surfaces clean.
A soft bristle brush may be used to loosen caked on dirt
or oil.
A vacuum cleaner may be used to pick up loose dirt and
debris.
Low pressure air (not to exceed 25 psi) may be used to
blow away dirt. Inspect cooling air slots and opening on
generator. These openings must be kept clean and
unobstructed.
STORAGE
To ensure the unit is ready to run after a utility power
failure, the generator should be started at least once every
seven days and allowed to run at least 30 minutes. If this
cannot be done and you must store the unit for more than
30 days, use the following guidelines to prepare it for
storage.
Generator Storage
Clean the generator as outlined in “To Clean the
Generator.
Check that cooling air slots and openings on the
generator are open and unobstructed.
Plug the DC Float Charger into the DC Float Charger
jack on the control panel and into a convenient 120 Volt
AC building outlet. This will ensure that the starting
battery remains fully charged.
For permanent storage (there is no intention to use the
generator for any reason), disconnect the negative
battery cable from the battery and Do Not connect the
DC Float Charger.
DANGER! Do Not place a storage cover over a
hot generator. Let the unit cool for a sufficient time
before placing the cover on the unit.
Store generator in clean and dry area.
