The Handy THS80 Assembly And Operating Instructions Manual

  • Hello! I'm your chat assistant. I've reviewed the Assembly and Operating Instruction for the Spreader THS80. This document provides detailed guidance on assembly, operation, and maintenance including information on adjusting flow rate and calculating the amount of material needed. I'm ready to answer your questions about the spreader.
  • What should I do if my spreader does not spread evenly?
What is the recommended speed for pushing the spreader?
How do I adjust the spreader's flow rate?
Can I use salt in this spreader?

2. Remove and identify loose parts from carton and bag.
1. HELPFUL HINTS:
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE ASSEMBLY
z If your spreader does not spread evenly, be sure the FRONT of the gear box points to the
front of the spreader. The impeller must turn clockwise. Reversing the gear box will cause
the impeller to turn counter clockwise. Clean the impeller plate after each use. Fertilizer
stuck on the impeller blades will cause uneven spreading.
z Your spreader is designed to be pushed at three miles per hour, which is a brisk walking
speed. Slower or faster speeds will change the spread patterns. Wet fertilizer will also
change the spread pattern and flow rate. Clean your spreader thoroughly after each use.
Wash between the shut off plate and bottom of the hopper.
z Gears are permanently lubricated at the factory. Do not open the gear box or dirt may
enter.

STEP 1: Install impeller onto the Gear Box & Axle Assembly. Insert Screw M4x20 through
impeller then through Gear Box Axle.
4
STEP 2: Attach the Wheel Assembly Frame on each side of the Gear Box Axle and Fixing
Connecting Rod, insert two bolts M6x40 into the Fixing Connecting Rod through the Wheel
Assembly Frame. Make sure the hole in the Gear Box Axle is on the right side when assembling
as shown. Attach the Wheel Assembly Frames and Support Leg onto Hopper using bolts M6x70,
lock nuts M6 and Big Flat Washers Ø6. Note: The bolts and nuts needn't be tightened yet.

STEP 3: Insert the Inner Axle Bushing into the Outer Axle Bushing and make sure they are tight.
Install the right Wheel Assembly onto the right Axle using a bolt M5x45 and lock nut M5, and then
install the Cap onto the right Axle using a wooden or rubber hammer. Now install the left Wheel
Assembly onto the left Axle, put a flat washer Ø16 and install the Cap onto left Axle using a
wooden or rubber hammer.
Insert the Inner Axle Bushing into the Outer Axle
Bushing and make sure that they are tight
6
STEP 4: Insert Upper Handle into the Support Leg and tighten using bolts M6x40 and Lock Nuts
M6. NOW GO BACK AND TIGHTEN ALL NUTS AND BOLTS STARTING WITH FIRST STEP.
DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.
7
STEP 5: (1) Insert the Steel Wire head of the control cable into the small hole on the Gauge and
Lever Assembly. (2) Release the two bolts M5x10 and lock nuts on the Press Plate. (3) Put the
Plastic Tube into the slot of the Press Plate. (4) Retighten the two bolts M5x10 and lock nuts
again. (5). Insert R Pin.
8
STEP 6: ADJUSTMENTS. When you have finished all of the above steps, if the hole at the
bottom of hopper cannot be closed and opened completely by using the handle you may
need to the follow these additional steps. (1) Release the two bolts M5x10 on clamp as
shown. (2). Push the handle to the top position, use your hand to adjust the adjustable plate so
as to make sure the hole at the bottom of the hopper can be closed completely. (3). Push the
handle to the lowest position, use your hand to adjust the adjustable plate so as to make sure the
hole at the bottom of the hopper can be opened completely. (4). Tighten the bolts and nuts on
clamp.
To operate this spreader, push the handle to the lowest position (downwards). You may
move the position of the Wing nut on the Gauge & Lever to adjust the space on the hole
between the hopper and the adjustable plate as per your need when spreading.
Adjusting the position of this nut will
change the size of the hole between the
hopper and the adjustable plate.

USING YOUR SPREADER
1. Determine the approximate square footage of the area to be covered and estimate the
amount of material required using the table on the next page.
2. Before filling the hopper make sure the flow control arm is in the off position and the closure
plate is shut.
3. Break up any lumpy fertilizer as you fill the hopper.
4. Set the adjustable stop with the flow control arm still in the off position. Refer to the
application chart on pages 11 and 12 and to the instructions on the fertilizer bag to select the
proper flow rate setting.
5. The application chart is calculated for application at a vehicle speed of 3 mph, or 100ft. in
approximately 23 seconds. A variation in speed will require an adjustment of the flow rate to
maintain the same coverage. The faster you walk, the wider the broadcast width.
6. Make sure the drive pin is installed in the axle before starting the spreader.
7. Always start walking before opening the closure plate.
8. Always shut the closure plate before turning or stopping.
9. If fertilizer is accidentally deposited too heavily in a small area, soak the area thoroughly with
a garden hose or sprinkler to prevent burning of the lawn.
10. To insure uniform coverage, make each pass so that the broadcast pattern slightly overlaps
the pattern from the previous pass as shown in figure below. The approximate broadcast
widths for different materials are shown in the application chart on pages 11 and 12.
11. When broadcasting weed control fertilizers, make sure the broadcast pattern does not hit
evergreen trees, flowers or shrubs.
12. Always use the rain cover in wet weather conditions to keep the hopper contents dry.
10
CALCULATING THE AMOUNT OF MATERIAL NEEDED
To calculate the amount of fertilizer you will need to cover your lawn, divide the coverage amount listed on the
label by the weight of the fertilizer bag. For example a 10lb. bag of fertilizer with coverage of 10,000 square
feet will distribute 1lb. of fertilizer every 1,000 square feet at full rate or 1/2lb. of fertilizer every 1,000 square
feet at half rate. For pre-calculated rates see Chart A (Example: 25LB. bag with 15,000 sq. ft. coverage =
1.7lb./1,000 sq. ft.). Use Chart B to find the closest spreader setting (Example: 1.7lb./1000 sq. ft. = Spreader
Setting of 12).

NOTE: DO NOT USE SALT. Using salt in this spreader (especially rock salt) will damage the mechanism
and shorten the life of the machine. If you do choose to use salt in your machine, you should remove
the agitator to reduce damage to the gearbox, use refined deicing salt and thoroughly clean the
spreader after use.

PRECISION SPREADERS
SUPPLEMENTARY INSTRUCTIONS
USING YOUR SPREADER
Precision spreaders are designed to spread dry, powdered or granulated, materials thinly and evenly over any
reasonably smooth surface.
Proceed as follows
1. Make certain that the material is dry and “free running”. If in doubt pass it through a sieve with 3mm (1/8”)
mesh to remove lumps.
2. Set rate-setting dial to No2.
3. Fill the hopper approximately ¾ full.
4. Push the spreader forward and open feed gate (push the knob down) whilst in motion. If spread is uneven
or inadequate pull the lever up and set micro-dial to a higher number. Repeat until satisfactory distribution
is obtained.
N.B. ALWAYS MOVE OFF BEFORE OPENING THE FEED-GATE. ALWAYS CLOSE THE
FEED-GATE BEFORE STOPPING.
Even branded materials may vary in grain size, humidity, Density etc. If you are in doubt either (1) Choose
a lower setting than that suggested above or (2) Start at dial setting No.2 and progressively dial higher
numbers until an even spread is achieved. Lock the dial clamp and apply material. This will, give rather
less than the manufacturers of the material recommends.
