SELECTION
OF
LOCATION

Select a
well-ventilated
place
that is not
exposed
to
direct
sunlight.
Avoid humid or
dusty
locations.

unit should
not
be
placed
near
electric appliances
that may

interference,

motors,
strong
magnets
etc. Locations

should also be avoided.
CONNECTION
TO A RECEIVER
OR
PRE-AMPLIFIER
CONNECTING
FOR PLAYBACK
1.
Turn off
the receiver
or
pre-amplifier.
2.
Find the TAPE INPUT
jacks
on
your
receiver or
pre-
amplifier
marked TAPE PLAY,
PLAYBACK, LINE lN, TAPE
MONITOR, TAPE, AUX, or the
like.
3.
Using
the shielded
audio
cables supplied,
connect the
LEFT LINE OUT
jack
to
the receiver or
pre-amplifier
LEFT TAPE INPUT
jack.
4.
Connect
the RIGHT LINE OUT
jack
to the receiver or
pre-
amplifier
RIGHT TAPE INPUT
jack.
CONNECTING FOR
RECORDING

Find
the RECORD
OUTPUT
jacks
marked
TAPE REC,
REC
OUT, LINE
OUT,
TAPE
OUT, or the like.
2.
Using the
shielded audio cables
supplied, connect the
LEFT LINE lN
jack
to the receiver or
pre-amplifier
LEFT
RECORD
OUTPUT
jack.
3.
Connect
the
RIGHT LINE lN
jack
to the receiver
or
pre-
amplifier RIGHT RECORD
OUTPUT
jack.
4.
After
completing all connections,
connect the
power
cord
of
the
unit
to
an AC outlet.

release the

to turn
the

RECORD
key
Switches
the recqrder into the
record mode,
but
must
be
depressed with
the PLAY key.
The RECORD
key
can be
depressed only
if
a cassette,
with erase safeguards
intact,
is inserted into the
cassette
compartment.
REWIND key
Rewinds tape
rapidly.
FAST
FORWARD
(F
FWD) key
Advances tape rapidly.
PLAY key
Starts tape
motion
during
PLAY
and
RECORD mode.
STOP/EJECT
key
When
depressed, all
RECORD, PLAY, REWIND, and
FAST
FORWARD
functions
are
stopped.
Depressing
the key
again will open
the
cassette compartment
lid.
PAUSE
key
When depressed,
instantly
stops
tape motion during
recording
or
playback.
To
restart,
depress'the
PAUSE key
again.

Separate
inputs for
left
and
right
channel
microphones
permit
live
stereo
recordings.
Plugging
in microphones, stops
recording
of other

INPUT LEVEL controls
Separate
controls
provide
independent adjustment
of
each
channel's
recording
level for
precise
adjusting
and
balancing
of
stereo
signals.
PHONES
jack
Provide for headphone
monitoring during
recording as
well as
private
listening
during
playback.
Level
display
This
level
display shows
actual
peak
levels,
and
lets
you
set
the
best
recording
level. lt also show
relative
playback
sound
level.
RECORD indicator
Lights up when
the recorder
is
placed
in the
RECORD
mode.
TAPE COUNTER and
RESET buttON
The
3-digit
counter enables
you
to locate
any
point
on
the
cassette
tape.
When
you
start
recording,
set
the counter
to
"000"
by
pressing
the RESET button.
As
you
record various
selections,
make
a
note
of the
counter
number
at
the
beginning
of each.
To
play
back a
particular
selection, depress
the FAST FORWARD
or
REWIND
key until
the counter
registers the number
previously
noted.
Cassette
compartment
Holds the
cassette
while
you
record
or
play
back a
tape.

CHECKING
THE
CASSETTE
Make
sure that the
cassette
tape
has
no
slack
prior
to
inserting
cassette into
the
recorder.
Unless the tape
is
taut,
it may wind
around the
head mechanism and
trouble
may
result.
Use a
pen-
cil as shown
in
the
picture
to take up slack on one of the
reels.
TO INSERT
THE
CASSETTE.
Press
the STOP/EJECT
key. The
cassette
compartment lid
will
open. Insert
the cassette with full reel
to
the
left
(as
seen thru
window)
and
with
tape
slot at bottom.
The
cassette will fit into
the
unit only
in
the
correct
position.
To
place
the
cassette in
operating
position,
just
close
the
compart-
ment
by
pushing
in
on top
of
lid.
SAFEGUARD
AGAINST
ACCIDENTAL
ERASURE......
Whenever
a
recording
is
made, the
sound
previously
recorded
on the tape
is
erased
automatically.

valuable
recor-
dings
from accidental erasure,
the unit and
cassette
are
equip-
ped
with a safety device.
To
preserve
recorded material on a
cassette, break out the
flaps on the
rear
of
the cassette. Use
a
screw driver
for
this
purpose.

flap
"8"
to
preserve
SIDE

hole
where flap had
been with adhesive tape.

RECOMMEN DED
CASSETTE TAPES
ln
order to
obtain optimum
performance,
it is
essential
to
use
only
high
quality
cassette tapes,
The
bias and equalization of
your
tape deck are adjusted to
yield
excellent
results
il used with brand
name
tapes
such
as
SANYO,
TDK, BASF,
MAXELL, SCOTCH,
MEMOREX,
AMPEX and
FUJI.
Use C-30,
C-60
and
C-90
cassettes
only.
We
do
not recommend the
C-120
cassettes
because
they
are
subject
to
mechanical
instability and
also
proper
and constant
tape tension
cannot
be controlled.
TAPE
SELECT SWITCH
Your recorder has
a
TAPE SELECT switch
which
enables
you
to
select
the
proper
recording
bias
and the
proper
recording
and
playback
equalization
for the type of tape
being used.
For
optimum
recording and
playback
performance,
change
the
switch
position
according to
the type
of
tape
in use,
before
recording
or
playback.

Check
the connections. See

Insert
the
cassette in
the
compartment with
the
side
to
be
recorded
toward
you. (When
using
an unrecorded
cassette
the
full
reel will be
on the
left
side.)
Then
set the
POWER
ON/OFF
switch
to
"ON".
3.
Set
the TAPE SELECT
switch
for
type of
tape
being
used
(NORMAL
or CrO,).
4.
lf
you
are using a
partially
recorded cassette and wish
to
go
back
and
record from
the
beginning
of
reel,
then
rewind
the
tape
by
pressing
the
REWIND
key.
Press
the
counter
Reset button
to
reset
the
counter
to
"000"
after rewinding.
5. First
press
the
PAUSE key,
then
RECORD and PLAY keys
simultaneously.
6. Adjust INPUT
LEVEL
controls so
that the
level
dis-
play
just
reach
O-VU on
the loudest
passages
of
your
recording.
NOTE:
Be
sure
your
recording levelis sef corectly.
Recording
with
the
level sef

(RED
LED's
light up con-
stantly)
resu/ts in a distorted recording.
Recording
with
the

only

or
not

After
setting the
proper
recording levels,
start
recording
by
depressing
the
PAUSE
key again.
8. During
recording, RECORD
indicator will light
up.

you
wish
to
briefly
stop
the
tape without
resetting
the
RECORD
and PLAY keys,
depress the PAUSE key.
To restart,
press
the PAUSE
key
again.
9.
At
the
end of the
recording,
press
the
STOP/EJECT key.
lf the
tape
is
wound completely
to
the rig.ht reel
while
recor-
ding,
the tape will stop automatically
and
your
recorder
will
return
to the
STOP
mode.
10. Push
in
and
release
the
POWER
switch to
turn
power
off.
TO PLAY
BACK......

Make connection to
suitable sound.system
as described on
page
2, and
then
set
the
POWER ON/OFF
switch to
"oN".

Insert
the
recorded cassette
with
the
side to
be
played
toward
you.
3.
Set
the
TAPE
SELECT switch
for type
of tape
being
used
(NORMAL
or
CrO,).
4.
Depress
the
PLAY key. Your unit will begin to
play
back.
5.
To
stop
playback
temporarily,
press
the
PAUSE key.
Press
the
PAUSE key again to
restart
playback
operation.
6.
To
play
back any
desired
portion
in the middle
of
the
tape,
use
FAST FORWARD
or REWIND key.
Press the
STOP/EJECT
key
after
FAST FORWARD or REWIND to
stop the
tape
deck
motor at
the
end
of the tape.
7. When
playback
is finished,
press
the
STOP/EJECT
key.
lf
the end of the tape
is reached
while
playing
back,
your
recorder will automatically
stop.
Push
the
PowER
oN/oFF
switch to
"oFF".

MAINTENANCE
Please remember that
your
recorder is
a sensitive electro-
mechanical
device
which
needs
occasional
maintenance.
1.
Cleaning of
neads
and
pinch
roller.
To assure continued high
performance
from
your
recorder,
periodically
clean heads,
pinch
roller and capstan
whenever an
accumulation
of dust and
red-brown
oxide
particles
is noticed.
These
particles
may
be
removed
with a cotton
swab
moistened in isopropyl
alcohol
or special head cleaning
fluid. To do this
properly, push
the STOP/EJECT key and
cassette compartment lid
will open.
Carefully
rub
the face
of the head with
alcohol and also the
surface of the capstan
and
pinch
roller.
2.
Cleaning of cabinet and visible metal
parts.
Use a clean
soft
cloth moistened with
plain
lukewarm
water.
Never
use benzol, benzine or other strong chemical
cleaners
since these could damage
the
finish
of
your
unit.
It is important
that
no liquid
reaches
the
insides
of the
recorder.
