System and Memory Configuration Overview
SYSTEM AND MEMORY OVERVIEW
The Sun Fire X4150 and Sun Fire X4250 have 16 DIMM slots for up to 64 GB (16 x 4GB) of PC2-5300 667 MHz ECC fully buffered DDR2 memory.
• 2 FB-DIMMs (minimum configuration) and 16 FB-DIMMs (fully populated configuration)
Caution: Refer to your system owner’s manual for detailed
instructions. System parts are sensitive to electrostatic
discharge and can be damaged by the static charge
you may carry. You should wear a grounded wrist strap.
• The DIMMs must be populated in pairs and the pairs must be identical in organization, size and speed.
• Install the highest-capacity DIMMs in the lowest-numbered DIMM slots.
The Sun Netra X4250 has 16 slots for up to 64 GB (16 x 4GB) of PC2-5300 667 MHz ECC fully buffered DDR2 memory.
• 2 FB-DIMMs (minimum configuration) and 16 FB-DIMMs (fully populated configuration)
• The DIMMs must be populated in pairs and the pairs must be identical in organization, size and speed.
• Install the highest-capacity DIMMs in the lowest-numbered DIMM slots.
Note: When 8GB DIMMs are available, this system will support 128 GB (16 x 8GB)
The Sun Netra X4450 has 32 slots for up to 128 GB (32 x 4GB) of PC2-5300 667 MHz ECC fully buffered DDR2 memory.
• 2 FB-DIMMs (minimum configuration) and 16 FB-DIMMs (fully populated configuration)
• The DIMMs must be populated in pairs and the pairs must be identical in organization, size and speed.
• Install the highest-capacity DIMMs in the lowest-numbered DIMM slots.
Note: When 8GB DIMMs are available, this system will support 256 GB (32 x 8GB)
The Sun Fire X4450 has 32 DIMM slots for up to 256 GB (32 x 8GB) of PC2-5300 667 MHz ECC fully buffered DDR2 memory.
• 2 FB-DIMMs (minimum configuration) and 32 FB-DIMMs (fully populated configuration)
• The DIMMs must be populated in pairs and the pairs must be identical in organization, size, voltage, and speed.
• Install the highest-capacity DIMMs in the lowest-numbered DIMM slots.
Note: Either 1.8V FB-DIMMs (X6382A, DRSX4450/8GB) or low voltage (LV) 1.5V FB-DIMMs (X6437A, DRSX4450LV/16GB) are supported. All FB-
DIMMs must be the same voltage. If you upgrade to LV 1.5V FB-DIMMs, you must replace all FB-DIMMs.
In all systems, the four memory channels are organized into two branches. Modules of identical size must be populated in pairs, starting with memory
slot 0 on each channel (slot 0 on each channel is marked with white handles). DIMMS should be installed with the largest module pair size first. For
example, (4) 4GB DIMMS and (4) 2GB DIMMS should be installed as follows: A0/B0=4G, C0/D0=4G, A1/B1=2G, C1/D1=2G.

Caution: If the top cover of the system is removed before the server
is powered off, the server will immediately go into Standby
mode.
Note: Refer to your system owner’s manual for detailed instructions.
Removing the Top Cover:
The top cover and fan door are integrated.
• Unlatch the fan module door.
• Pull the two release tabs back to release the door.
• Rotate the fan door to the open position and hold it there.
• Press the top cover release button and slide the top cover toward the rear of the server the rear about a half-inch.
• Lift up and remove the top cover.
• Unpackage the FB-DIMMs and place them on an antistatic mat.
• Ensure that the ejector tabs are in the open position.
• Line up the FB-DIMM with the connector.
• Align the FB-DIMM notch with the key in the connector. (This ensures that the FB-DIMM is oriented correctly).
• Push the FB-DIMM into the connector until the ejector tabs lock the FB-DIMM in place.
If the FB-DIMM does not easily seat into the connector, verify that the orientation of the FB-DIMM is as shown in the figure below. If the orientation is
reversed, damage to the FB-DIMM might occur.
