Installation & Maintenance
Maintaining your Anode Rod
The Anode Rod should be checked at least once every two years, or once every year if there is a
water softener attached to the system. The Anode rod should be replaced if 25% or more of the
rod has deteriorated. This will ensure that your water heater is properly protected.
Installing a Plug Type Anode Rod
1. Turn o the power to the electric water heater or turn o the gas to the gas water heater.
2. Turn o the cold water supply to the water heater.
3. Turn on the hot water side of any faucet to relieve the pressure.
4. Attach a garden hose to the drain valve and partially drain the tank.
5. Remove the anode rod using a 1 1/16” socket. This will be very tight. The thread is right
handed (turn counter clockwise). You may need extra leverage. An impact wrench makes
the removal easier.
6. To install the new anode rod, use a generous amount of Teflon tape or pipe thread sealant
on the thread of the plug. Tighten the plug.
7. Turn o the hot water side of the faucet used to relieve the pressure.
8. Turn on the cold water supply to the water heater.
9. Check for leaks.
10. Turn on the power to the electric water or turn on the gas and relight the pilot.
Installing a Nipple Type Anode Rod
1. Turn o the power to the electric water heater or turn o the gas to the gas water heater.
2. Turn o the cold water supply to the water heater.
3. Turn on the hot water side of any faucet to relieve the pressure.
4. Attach a garden hose to the drain valve and partially drain the tank.
5. Disconnect the water heater connector on the hot water side of the tank. Using a pipe
wrench, unscrew the nipple. The thread is right handed (turn counter clockwise).
6. To install the new anode rod, use a generous amount of Teflon tape or pipe thread sealant
on the thread of the nipple. Tighten the nipple. Reattach the water heater connector and
tighten.
7. Turn o the hot water side of the faucet used to relieve the pressure.
8. Turn on the cold water supply to the water heater. Open the hot water side of any faucet
connected to the system to purge the air from the tank.
9. Check for leaks.
10. Turn on the power to the electric water heater or turn on the gas and relight the pilot.
