This chapter introduces you to SMARTNotebook® collaborative learning software and explains
how to get started with the software.
About SMARTî„¥Notebook software
In SMARTî„¥Notebook software, you can create .notebook files that include graphics, text, tables,
lines, shapes, animations and more. Present your file and keep your class’s attention as you move
and interact with these objects. When your class provides comments and suggestions, write their
input on the page using digital ink. You can open .notebook files in SMARTî„¥Notebook software on
a Windows®, Mac or Linux® computer. You can also export your file in a variety of formats, including
HTML and PDF.
You can install SMARTî„¥Notebook Tools as well as third-party add-ons to add special features to
SMARTî„¥Notebook software. SMARTî„¥Notebook Tools include the following:
l 3Dî„¥Tools for SMARTî„¥Notebook software
l Mixed Reality Tools for SMARTî„¥Documentî„¥Cameraâ„¢
About the other SMART software on your
computer
Your computer might include the following other SMART software.
l SMARTProductDrivers
Your interactive product detects contact with its screen and sends each contact point, along
with Pen tool information, to the connected computer. SMARTî„¥Productî„¥Drivers translates the
information into mouse clicks and digital ink. SMARTî„¥Productî„¥Drivers enables you to perform
normal computer operations by using your finger or a pen.
l SMARTInk™
Using SMARTî„¥Ink, you can write or draw on the screen in digital ink using a pen, and then save
or erase your notes.

l SMARTBoard® Tools
You can draw attention to specific parts of a page using SMARTî„¥Board Tools, such as the
Screen Shade, Spotlight, Magnifier and Pointer.
What’s new
SMARTî„¥Notebook 2015 software includes the following new features in the December release.
SMARTî„¥Notebook 15.2 software
Feature Topic
New Lesson Activity Builder (LAB) activities and themes
LAB includes two new activities: Speed Up and Label
Reveal. With Speedup, students race against each other
by answering questions. With Label Reveal, students
progressively unmask descriptive labels of an object’s
features.
Text and images can now be used with all activities (with
the exception of Fill In the Blanks). This adds a new fun
dimension to the activities.
As well, there are new LAB themes, including Knight and
Dragon, Bees, and Simple theme.

New Shout It Out! features
This release of Shout It Out! includes new teacher
oriented features, so that a student’s contribution can be
easily moved from one category to another. Student-side
additions include a device Home screen icon and a
contextual numeric keyboard for entering numbers.
As always, students can quickly create and contribute text
and image content to LAB content creation activities
using their own mobile devices, and teachers can easily
curate the content.

The SMARTî„¥Ink stamp pad comes with ten standard
stamps. And you can create your own personal stamps.
You can use the stamp pad to reinforce ideas, correct
student work, reward student achievements, and so on.
You can manipulate and erase stamps like you do digital
ink.

The SMART Ink 3.2 Toolbox on the SMART Ink toolbar
keeps the SMARTInk toolbar clutter free, and you’ll have
quick access to the Screen Capture, Text Input and Stamp

Quick Favorites
Your first four favorite pens will now appear around the Ink
toolbar, providing quick access.
SMARTInk plug-in for Adobe Reader
With the SMARTî„¥Ink plug-in, you can write, draw and erase
