Assembly
Introduction
The T28929 2" Pipe/Tube Notcher cuts notches in
pipe and tubing to make joints that fit together per-
fectly. This notcher features a durable steel frame,
is capable of 0-45˚ angle cuts, and works with any
standard drill press or slow-speed hand drill.
To install spindle for use:
1.
Pull pin shown in Figure 2 to release spindle.
2.
Remove

Attach spindle support to notcher using hex
bolts removed in Step 1.
Note: We recommend that height of spindle
support be adjusted so hole saw is as close
as possible to workpiece without touching.
This will help minimize flex in notcher.

5.
Loosen (2) hex bolts shown in Figure 7,
adjust clamp to desired angle, then tighten
hex bolts.

Note: For cutting steel pipe and tubing, we
recommend bi-metal hole saws. These can
be operated at up to 500 RPM for most
diameters and should be operated at higher
speeds for thin wall tubing.

Drill Press Operations
To use the Model T28929 with a drill press, the
notcher must be clamped securely to the drill
press base. It is important that the notcher is
secure enough so it will not twist or come off
of the table during use. To ensure square cuts,
the jig must be square to the base before being
mounted to the drill press table.
3.
Place notcher on drill press work table and
adjust table until top of notcher spindle is

lower than drill chuck (see Figure 9).

Failure to align spindle flats properly with
chuck jaws may result in spindle coming
loose and damaging notcher and drill chuck.
To reduce risk of eye or face injury from
flying chips, always wear approved safety
glasses and a face shield when operating
drill press.
4. Loosen two hex bolts from Step 2 just enough
so notcher can be aligned with drill chuck.
5.
Open drill chuck jaws and use downfeed
handles to lower chuck onto notcher spindle,
aligning chuck jaws with flats of notcher
spindle (see Figure 10). Tighten chuck jaws
to secure.
2.
Loosen both hex bolts in Figure 8, then swiv-
el base until square to frame, then tighten hex
bolts.

8. Remove lock pin from spindle then rotate
drill chuck by hand to test how easily whole
assembly turns.
If assembly turns with minimal effort, pro-
ceed to Step 10.
If assembly does not turn with minimal
effort, proceed to Step 9.
9.
Loosen (2) hex bolts securing notcher base to
frame, rotate spindle, then tighten hex bolts,
then return to Step 8. Repeat until assembly
turns with minimal effort.
10.
Loosen bolts/clamps securing notcher to drill
press table, rotate spindle, then tighten bolts/
clamps. Spindle should turn freely.
11.
When notcher is correctly installed on drill
press (see Figure 12): remove lock pin, apply
cutting fluid, turn drill press ON, and perform
notching operation.

Lubrication
During operation, the spindle bushings will require
lubrication. A few drops right before operation
will usually be adequate, but when using notcher
for long periods at a time, lubrication should be
applied several times per hour.

Apply a few drops of lubrication around spindle
shaft, above top bushing, and in spindle lock pin
hole (see Figure 15).
Cleaning & Protecting
Cleaning the Model T28929 is relatively easy.
Periodically brush away cuttings and debris,
especially around the spindle and bushings to
avoid scoring and binding.
Protect the notcher by wiping it clean after
every use and applying a light lubrication (see
Lubrication) to moving parts.
Before moving or storing tool, insert lock pin into
spindle to prevent movement. Store notcher cov-
ered in a dry, dust free location.
4.
Open drill chuck jaws and place chuck onto
notcher spindle, aligning chuck jaws with flats
of notcher spindle (see Figure 14). Tighten
chuck jaws to secure.
