Safety Precautions

The lightning flash with arrowhead symbol, within an equilateral triangle, is intended to

alert the user to the presence of uninsulated “dangerous voltage” within the product’s

enclosure that may be of sufficient magnitude to constitute a risk of electric shock to

persons.

The exclamation point within an equilateral triangle is intended to alert the user to the

presence of important operating and maintenance (servicing) instructions in the literature

accompanying the appliance.

Important Safety Instructions

This product was designed and manufactured to meet strict quality and safety standards. There are, however, some installation and operation

precautions of which you should be particularly aware. Please read these instructions before operating the equipment and save them for future

reference.

1. Read Instructions—All the safety and operating instructions should be read and understood before the appliance is operated.

2. Retain Instructions—The safety and operating instructions should be retained for future reference.

3. Heed Warnings—All warnings on the appliance and in the operating instructions should be followed.

4. Follow Instructions—All operating and use instructions should be followed.

5. Water and Moisture—The appliance should not be used near water - for example, near a bathtub, washbowl, kitchen sink, laundry tub, in a wet

basement or near a swimming pool, etc.

6. An appliance and cart combination should be moved with care. Quick stops, excessive force, and uneven surfaces may cause the appliance and cart

combination to overturn.

7. Tilt/Stability—All televisions must comply with recommended international global safety standards for tilt and stability properties of their cabinet

design. Do not compromise these design standards by applying excessive pull force to the front, or top, of the cabinet, which could ultimately overturn

the product. Also, do not endanger yourself, or children, by placing electronic equipment/toys on top of the cabinet. Such items could unexpectedly fall

from the top of the set and cause product damage and/or personal injury.

8. Ventilation—The appliance should be situated so that its location or position does not interfere with its proper ventilation. For example, the

appliance should not be situated on a bed, sofa, rug, or similar surface that may block the ventilation openings; or, placed in a built-in installation, such

as a bookcase or cabinet that may impede the flow of air through the ventilation openings.

9. Heat—The appliance should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other appliances (including amplifiers)

that produce heat.

10. Power Cord Protection—Power supply cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or

against them, paying particular attention to cords and plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the appliance.

11. Object and Liquid Entry—Never push objects of any kind into this product through cabinet slots, as they may touch dangerous voltage points or

12. Lightning—For added protection for this product during storm, or when it is left unattended and unused for long periods of time, unplug it from the

wall outlet and disconect the antenna or cable systems. This will prevent damage to the product due to lightning and power-line surges.

13. Attachments—Do not use attachments not recommended by the product manufacturer as they may cause hazards.

14. Damage Requiring Service—The appliance should be serviced by qualified service personnel when:

15. Servicing—The user should not attempt service to the appliance beyond that described in the Troubleshooting section of this guide. All other

servicing should be referred to qualified service personnel.

16. Cleaning—Unplug this product from the wall outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners; use a damp cloth for cleaning.

If the product comes in contact with any liquid, unplug the phone line and the power adapter and let the unit dry thoroughly before plugging it back in.

17. Power Source—This product should be operated only from the type of power source indicated on the marking label or in the Installation Guide. If

you are not sure of the type of power supply to your home, consult your dealer or local power company.

18. Overloaded Power Outlets—do not overload wall outlets and extension cords, as this can result in the risk of fire or electric shock.

19. Electric Shock—To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not disassemble this product. Take it to a qualified serviceperson when service or repair

work is required. Opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltage or other risks. Incorrect reassembly can cause electric shock when

this product is subsequently used.

20. Telephone Usage—When using your telephone equipment, basic safety precautions should be always followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric

shock and injury to persons. To reduce the risk of fire, use only No. 26 AWG or larger telecommunication line cord.

21. Avoid moving the unit while it is plugged in to avoid accumulative shock and vibration damage to the internal hard disk drive.

22. Keep your fingers well clear of the disc tray as it is closing. Neglecting to do so may cause serious personal injury.

23. Do not use a cracked, deformed, or repaired disc. These discs are easily broken and may cause serious personal injury and apparatus malfunction.

Power Source

TO USE AC POWER SOURCE

Use the AC polarized line cord provided for operation on AC. Insert the AC cord plug into a standard 120V

60Hz polarized AC outlet.

NOTES:

• Never connect the AC line cord plug to other than the specified voltage (120V 60 Hz). Use the attached

power cord only.

• If the polarized AC cord does not fit into a non-polarized AC outlet, do not attempt to file or cut the blade.

It is the user’s responsibility to have an electrician replace the obsolete outlet.

• If you cause a static discharge when touching the unit from the AC outlet and plug it back in. The unit

should return to normal operation.

FCC Information

Federal Communication Commission (FCC) - This equipment complies with both Part 15 and Part 68 of the FCC rules.

This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, persuant to part 15 of the FCC Rule. These limits are

designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation.

This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause

harmful interference to radio communications.

However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or

FCC Information

This equipment complies with Part 68 of the FCC Rules and the requirements adopted by ACTA. On the back of this equipment is a label that contains

a product identifier in the format US:AAAEQ##TXXXX. If requested, this information must be provided to your telephone company.

A plug and jack used to connect this equipment to the premises wiring and telephone network must comply with the applicable FCC Part 68 rules and

requirements adopted by ACTA. A compliant telephone cord and modular plug is provided with this product. It is designed to be connected to a

compatible modular jack that is also compliant. See installation instructions for details.

The REN is used to determine the number of devices that may connect to a telephone line. Excessive RENs on a telephone line may result in the devices

not ringing in response to an incoming call. In most but not all areas, the sum of the RENs should not exceed five (5.0). To be certain of the number of

devices that may be connected to a line, as determined by the total RENs, contact your local telephone company. For product approved after July 23,

2001, the REN for this product is part of the product identifier that has the format US:AAAEQ##TXXXX. The digits represented by ## are the REN

without the decimal point (e.q., 03 is a REN of 0.3). For earlier products, the REN is separately shown on the label.

If your DIGITAL MEDIA SERVER causes harm to the telephone network, the telephone company will notify you in advance that temporary

discontinuance of service may be required. But if advance notice isn’t practical, the telephone company will notify the customer as soon as possible.

Also, you will be advised of your right to file a complaint with the FCC if you believe it is necessary.

The telephone company may make changes in its facilities, equipment, operations or procedures that could affect the proper functioning of your

equipment. If they do, you will be notified in advance in order for you to make necessary modifications to maintain uninterrupted service.

If trouble is experienced with this unit, for repair or warranty information, please contact customer service at the address and phone listed below. If the

equipment is causing harm to the network, the telephone company may request that you disconnect the equipment until the problem is resolved.

DO NOT DISASSEMBLE THIS EQUIPMENT. It does not contain any user serviceable components.

We recommend the installation of an AC surge arrester in the AC outlet to which this equipment is connected. Telephone companies report that

electrical surges, typically lighting transients, are very destructive to customer terminal equipment connected to AC power sources.

Precautions

NOTES ON LOCATING

• Place the SD-H400 on a level surface. Do not use it on a shaky or

unstable surface such as a wobbling table or inclined stand. The

loaded disc may come off the proper position and cause damage to

the SD-H400.

• When you place this SD-H400 near a TV, radio, or VCR, the

playback picture may become poor and the sound may be distorted.

In this case, place the SD-H400 away from the TV, radio, or VCR.

TO OBTAIN A CLEAR PICTURE

The SD-H400 is a high technology, precision device. If the optical pick-

up lens and disc drive parts are dirty or worn down, the picture quality

deteriorates. To obtain a clear picture, we recommend regular inspection

and maintenance (cleaning or parts replacement) every 1,000 hours of

use depending on the operating environment. For details, contact your

nearest dealer.

NOTES ON MOISTURE CONDENSATION

Moisture condensation damages the SD-H400. Please read the

following carefully.

Moisture condensation occurs, for example, when you pour a cold drink

into a glass on a warm day. Drops of water form on the outside of the

glass. In the same way, moisture may condense on the optical pick-up

lens inside this unit, one of the most crucial internal parts of the SD-

H400.

Moisture condensation occurs during the following cases.

• When you bring the SD-H400 directly from a cold place to a warm

place.

• When you use the SD-H400 in a room where you just turned on the

heater, or a place where the cold wind from the air conditioner

directly hits the unit.

• In summer, when you use the SD-H400 in a hot and humid place just

after you move the unit from an air conditioned room.

• When you use the SD-H400 in a humid place.

Do not use the SD-H400 when moisture condensation may occur.

If you use the SD-H400 in such a situation, it may damage discs and

internal parts. Remove the disc, connect the power cord of the SD-

H400 player to the wall outlet, turn on the SD-H400, and leave it for

two or three hours. After two or three hours, the SD-H400 will have

warmed up and evaporated any moisture. Keep the SD-H400

connected to the wall outlet and moisture condensation will seldom

occur.

ON HANDLING DISCS

• Do not touch the playback side of the disc.

• Do not attach paper or tape to discs.

ON CLEANING DISCS

• Fingerprints and dust on the disc cause picture and sound

deterioration. Wipe the disc from the center outwards with a soft

cloth. Always keep the disc clean.

• If you cannot wipe off the dust with a soft cloth, wipe the disc lightly

with a slightly moistened soft cloth and finish with a dry cloth.

• Do not use any type of solvent such as thinner, benzine,

commercially available cleaners or antistatic spray for vinyl LPs. It

may damage the disc.

ON STORING DISCS

• Do not store discs in a place subject to direct sunlight or near heat

sources.

• Do not store discs in places subject to moisture and dust such as a

bathroom or near a humidifier.

• Store discs vertically in a case. Stacking or placing objects on discs

outside of their case may cause warping.

STRUCTURE OF DISC CONTENTS

Normally, DVD video discs are divided into titles, and the titles are sub-

divided into chapters. VIDEO CDs/audio CDs are divided into tracks.

Notes On Discs

Each title, chapter or track is assigned a number, which is called "title

number", "chapter number" or "track number" respectively.

There may be discs that do not have these numbers.

NOTES ON COPYRIGHT

It is forbidden by law to copy, broadcast, show, broadcast on cable, play

in public, and rent copyrighted material without permission.

DVD video discs are copy protected, and any recordings made from

these discs will be distorted.

This product incorporates copyright protection technology that is

protected by method claims of certain U.S. patents and other intellectual

property rights owned by Macrovision Corporation and other rights

owners. Use of this copyright protection technology must be authorized

by Macrovision Corporation, and is intended for home and other limited

viewing uses only unless otherwise authorized by Macrovision

Corporation. Reverse engineering or disassembly is prohibited.

This product also incorporates copyright protection technology related to

A/V media, that is designed to prevent copying and hence upon the

detection of such signal, recording may be prohibited. This applies to

timer recording too.

ABOUT DVD OPERATION MANUAL

This owner’s manual explains the basic instructions of this SD-H400.

Some DVD video discs are produced in a manner that allows specific or

limited operation during playback. As such, the SD-H400 may not

respond to all operating commands. This is not a defect in the SD-H400.

Refer to instruction notes of discs.

" " may appear on the TV screen during operation.

A " " means that the operation is not permitted by the SD-H400 or

the disc.

NOTES ON REGION NUMBERS

The region number of this SD-H400 is 1. If region numbers, which stand

for their playable area, are printed on your SD-H400 disc and you do not

find or , disc playback will not be allowed by the player. (In

this case, the SD-H400 will display a message on-screen.)

ON VIDEO CDS

This SD-H400 supports VIDEO CDs equipped with the PBC (Version

2.0) function. (PBC is the abbreviation of Playback Control.) You can

enjoy two playback variations depending on types of discs.

• VIDEO CD not equipped with PBC function (Version 1.1)

Sound and movie can be played on this SD-H400 in the same way as

an audio CD.

• VIDEO CD equipped with PBC function (Version 2.0)

In addition to operation of a VIDEO CD not equipped with the PBC

function, you can enjoy playback of interactive software with search

function by using the menu displayed on the TV screen (Menu

Playback). Some of the functions described in this owner's manual

may not work with some discs.

PLAYABLE DISCS

You cannot play discs other than those listed in the table on the right.

You cannot play DVD-RAM discs or non-standardized discs, etc., even

if they may be labeled as in the table on the right.

This SD-H400 uses the NTSC color system, and cannot play DVD video

discs recorded in any other color system (PAL, SECAM, etc.).

This SD-H400 can play the following discs.

Loading batteries

1. Open the cover.

2. Insert batteries (AAA size).

Make sure to match the + and – on the batteries to the marks inside the battery

compartment.

3. Close the cover.

Notes on batteries

• Improper use of batteries may cause

battery leakage and corrosion. To operate

the remote control correctly, follow the

instructions below.

• Do not insert batteries into the remote

control in the wrong direction.

• Do not charge, heat, open, or short-

circuit the batteries. Do not throw

batteries into a fire.

• Do not leave dead or exhausted batteries

in the remote control.

• Do not use different types of batteries

together, or mix old and new batteries.

• If you do not use the remote control for a

long period of time, remove the batteries

to avoid possible damage from battery

corrosion.

• If the remote control does not function

correctly or if the operating range

becomes reduced, replace all batteries

with new ones.

• If battery leakage occurs, wipe the

battery liquid from the battery

compartment, then insert new batteries.

Operating with the remote control

Point the remote control at the remote sensor and press the buttons.

Distance: About 7 m (23 feet) from the front of the remote sensor

Angle: About 30° in each direction of the front of the remote sensor

Do not expose the remote sensor of the SD-H400 to a strong light source such as direct sunlight or

other illumination. If you do so, you may not be able to operate the SD-H400 via the remote control.

Notes on the remote control

• Direct the remote control at the remote

sensor of the SD-H400.

• Do not drop or give the remote control a

shock.

• Do not leave the remote control near an

extremely hot or humid place.

• Do not spill water or put anything wet on

the remote control.

• Do not open the remote control.
