even choose to manage your switch independent from your network tool’s applica-
tion program interface.
Features and Benefits
Leverages up to four (4) network appliances across up to sixteen (16) 10/100/1000 baseT SPAN/mirror
ports with a single switch.
Daisy-chain up to four (4) units to give your network tools access to as many as sixty-four (64)
10/100/1000 baseT SPAN/mirror ports.
Manage the switch through your monitoring tool’s API or use Datacom Systems MANAgentssoftware
using a standard network cable.
• Use MANAgentssoftware to save your network configuration and segment names.
• Central management reduces the need to travel with portable equipment.
• Dual redundant power supplies ensure monitoring uptime.

An explanation of each panel legend follows:
POWER 1 &2 — Two power source circuit connections are provided. Use of a second different external
power source circuit than the first is strongly recommended to assure uninterrupted oper-
ation. Furthermore, connecting the second power source circuit to a different external
power source circuit than the first helps to eliminate power as a single point of failure. The

CONTROL — This USB-style connector port is cabled to the 9-pin COM port connector of a host computer
for local 4X16SP-1000BT Copper Gigabit Switch control in a stand alone 4X16SP-1000BT
switch configuration or as the first 4X16SP-1000BT switch in a daisy-chain configuration. A
daisy-chained 4X16SP-1000BT switch CONTROL port is cabled to the LINK port of the preced-
ing sequence switch in the daisy-chain.
LINK — This USB-style connector port is cabled to the CONTROL port of the next in sequence 4X16SP-
1000BT switch when connected in a daisy-chain configuration.
NETWORK PORTS 1 to 16 — These ports are RJ45 connectors used for making connection to SPAN network
device connectors or In-Line taps.
DAISY PORTS A to D — These ports are RJ45 connectors cabled to the next in sequence 4X16SP-1000BT
switch COMMON A,COMMON B,COMMON C or COMMON D port, respectively,
when connected in a daisy-chain configuration. These connectors have integrated
LEDs that display status of each port. See Table 1 for LED display.

COMMON PORTS A to D — These ports are RJ45 connectors cabled to the NIC MONITOR port connector of
network tools. The 4X16SP-1000BT Copper Giagbit Switch connects the select-
ed network port (1 to 16) to the COMMON A,COMMON B,COMMON C or COM-
MON D port, but the COMMON A,COMMON B,COMMON C and COMMON D port
can not be connected to the same network port at the same time. These con-
nectors have integrated LEDs that display status of each port. See Table 1 for
LED display.

Gigabit SPAN switch rear panel. This is the location for power source inlet connec-
tions, serial number (SN) and media access control (MAC) address information.

An explanation of each follows:
Power Connectors — 100-240 VAC 50-60 Hz. Two inlet power source circuit IEC 320 connections are pro-
vided. Use of a second different external power source circuit than the first is strongly
recommended to assure uninterrupted operation. Furthermore, connecting the second
power source circuit to a different external power source circuit than the first helps to
eliminate power as a single point of failure. The POWER 1 and 2LEDs on the front
panel illuminate indicating power 1 and 2, respectively, are on. Either LED not illumi-
nated indicates a lack of power and immediate investigation is required to insure redun-
dant power integrity.
SN — Serial Number (SN). A number that identifies Datacom Systems electronic equipment such as the
4X16SP-1000BT Copper Giagbit Switch.
MAC — Media Access Control (MAC) address, a hardware address that uniquely identifies each node (this
4X16SP-1000BT Copper Giagbit Switch) of a network.

To connect the 4X16SP-1000BT into the network, refer to FIGURE 4 and follow these steps:
Step 1. Two 100-240 VAC, 50-60 Hz power source inlet connections are provided.
Use of the second power source is strongly recommended to assure uninter-
rupted monitoring. Connect both AC power cables into the IEC 320 inlet
connectors, respectively, of the 4X16SP-1000BT Copper Gigabit SPAN
Switch. Plug the power cables into the external power source, furthermore,
connecting the second power cable to a different external power source cir-
cuit than the first power cable eliminates power as a single point of failure.
The front panel POWER 1 and 2LEDs illuminate indicating power 1 and 2,
respectively, are on. Either LED not illuminated indicates a defective power
source and immediate investigation is required to insure redundant power
integrity.
IMPORTANT: The maximum length of 100 meters must not be exceeded between end-points.
