Introduction
This user manual supports you in the planning, connecting,
configuring and parameterization of the YSPI4. It is geared towards
persons who can program PLC systems (SIMATIC). SIMATIC is a
registered trademark of Siemens AG. Version 1.2, as of: March 1998
The YSPI4 (serial PROFIBUS gateway) enables a PROFIBUS DP
master to communicate with a field device with a serial interface.
The YSPI4 is used to turn the field device with a serial interface into
a real PROFIBUS subscriber. The YSPI4 does this by converting the
data exchanged between the PROFIBUS DP master and the field
device into a form that can be read by each of the devices. The data
are exchanged between the DP master and YSP14 in the form of
telegrams and/or telegram fragments via a data channel whose size
can be changed in the configuration and adjusted to the telegram
length and available PLC E/A range. The data channel consists of a
transmitting and receiving channel. When planning the YSPI4, please
take note of the general rules for planning PROFIBUS components so
that the YSPI4 can operate disruption-free.
Safety
To prevent personal injuries and material damage follow:
– Provisions for handling electrical components as per VDE 0100
– Valid safety and accident prevention regulations (UVV)
– Safety instructions
– PROFIBUS standard EN 50170
Installation
The YSPI4 may only be installed and/or removed by qualified
personnel with electrical training.
Bus cable
Only use a special, two-core, twisted and shielded PROFIBUS cable
as a bus cable. This is the only way to ensure the high transmission
rates.

Cable lengths
Information regarding PROFIBUS cable lengths can be found in your
manual on the CD.
Termination resistor
Use a termination resistor when your YSPI4 is located at the
beginning or the end of the PROFIBUS cable. If not, this can lead
to disruptions in the data transmission as well as damage to other
bus subscribers. Only use a PROFIBUS plug in which the termination
resistor is already integrated. We recommend plugs from ERNI and
Siemens.
Bus connector plug
Only use commercially available PROFIBUS connection plugs for the
PROFIBUS connection.
Cable shielding
Shielded cables are less sensitive to disruptions due to
electromagnetic fields. The interference currents are diverted to the
ground for shielded cables via the conductive shield rail linked to the
housing. A low-impedance connection to the protective conductor
is especially important so that the diverted interference currents
themselves do not lead to sources of interference. The following
rules must be followed when shielding the cables for the PROFIBUS
interface and the serial interface:
– Only use cables whose shield braid has a coverage over 80%
– Do not use cables that only have a foil shield because the foil can
be damaged by tension and pressure
– Always connect the shielding of cables on both sides so that there is
a good interference resistance even in the higher frequency range.

Safety instructions
To prevent personal injury and damage to the YSPI4, the
following safety instructions must be followed before the YSPI4 is
connected:
– The YSPI4 may only be installed and/or removed by qualified
personnel with electrical training.
– When connecting the YSPI4, provisions for handling electrical
components as per VDE 0100 must be followed.
– The YSPI4 is used to connect field devices with a serial interface
to the PROFIBUS. The YSPI4 may never be used for other
purposes.
– Condensation can build up in the housing due to major
temperature differences between the storage location and the
connection location; this can damage the YSPI4. When there
are major temperature differences, wait at least 3 hours before
putting the YSPI4 into operation.
– This user manual contains signal words that draw attention to
special situations:
Danger!
Warning of personal injury due to electrical voltage
