Removing the Mirror Box
and Slow Speed Governor

remove front Nikon plate, then 2 screws concealed below the plate and 2 on both side of front standard; lift
standard paying attention to the little metal bar under the standard: it is where name plate screws fasten!
Unscrew to remove left and right covers
loosen these tiny screws just enough to remove the counter guard
Remove film exposure type plate and the washer
Remove 3 screws securing advance lever
then the advance lever ring
Remove the retaining ring
Turn the A-R ring until you can
see the screw and loose a little,
then unscrew the ring securing
the A-R ring.
The necessary tool can be home made
The button can now be removed
Unscrew to remove shutter/ASA dial
Right cover can come off!
Unscrew rewind knob, then these screws to remove the hot shoe cover
Remove these too and lift hot shoe base
Remove hot shoe contacts and spring
Lift left cover and remove flash baseplate (3 screws)
unscrew these to free the prism locking mechanism
remove selftimer lever and and the underlying rings
peel leatherette and unscrew 4 screws to remove selftimer
remove 5 frontal screws
and 2 screws in the upper back, hidden under the seal
mirror box came off nicely; it’s time to temporary fit charge lever and shutter/asa dial to test shutter mechanics
Bottom of the camera is usually were dirty, clean it with the help of a brush and/or a blower; to operate shutter,
manteining shutter button depressed , push the little lever on the right: this simulate mirror up and trigger the
release of the curtain. Set a slow shutter like 1sec and look how it work. Usually slow governor is in poor state and
need a good clean
Remove this screw to access bottom mechanics and to remove the governor
this 2 screws secure slow governor: detach and clean very well in lighter fuel till it operate smoothly, refit and retest
shutter operation. Clean and lube curtains and mirror box as needing, then refit it and test again.
