PRODUCT SAFETY
Installation and servicing is only to be carried out by suitably qualified and
experienced personnel.
Mains cameras contain hazardous voltages
Do not remove covers as there is a risk of injury or death by electric shock.
Mains powered cameras must be connected to earth ground.
Low voltage cameras must be powered from a UL listed class 2 power supply.
For outdoor use, an appropriate protective housing conforming to IP65 or UL50
or better must be used.
Mains cameras are not evaluated by UL.
This camera range is designed for use in general purpose CCTV applications and has no other
purpose. Only operate your camera between the temperatures of -10

INTRODUCTION
Read all of these instructions. Use them to install your camera and have them available for its
lifetime. If you have any problems, contact Ademco Technical Support. Note that not all cameras
have all of the features described in this manual. Refer to the table below for the features of
individual cameras. All cameras are fitted with a Direct Drive (DD) and Video Drive auto Iris (AI)
lens connector, have adjustable back focus and accept C and CS lenses.

PEAK WHITE INVERSION ON/OFF
Peak white inversion is used to eliminate the effect of point sources of light, for example car
headlamps. These point sources of light are typically much brighter than the rest of the scene
and although relatively small in terms of area, they can dramatically affect the cameras exposure
system and the lens iris. For example, car headlamps will cause the lens iris to close or the
cameras exposure time to be decreased. The rest of the scene will then become much darker
and thus it could prove impossible to read the vehicle licence plate.
Peak white inversion renders the highlights in such a scene above a specified brightness
threshold as black. This is performed before the signal is passed to the cameras electronic iris
control, AGC control or the lens iris. Therefore point sources of light are effectively ignored and
the exposure and applied gain is correct for the rest of the scene. The inverted areas of the
scene are shown by the monitor as black. See also Peak White Inversion Adjustment
Potentiometer.
When using peak white inversion, the AV-PK potentiometer (either on the camera for a DC lens,
or the lens itself for a video drive type lens), must be set to peak
BACKLIGHT COMPENSATION
The backlight compensation feature can be used to eliminate the effect of an area of strong
background lighting in a scene. If a strong background light such as a window exists in a
scene, the camera will try to compensate for it by reducing the overall exposure. This would
mean that the areas surrounding the window would become too dark.
By using the backlight compensation feature, it is possible to select areas of the scene which
may be used to control the exposure. The BLC feature is used in conjunction with the BLC
Window Selection switches (B, C and D, figure 1). These switches select one of eight predefined
BLC windows which the camera uses to calculate its exposure. The shaded area on the
diagram represents the area used within the scene for exposure control. Any part of the scene
outside of the shaded area is ignored. Default setting is Window 1.
The BLC feature is turned on or off using switch K figure 1. Default setting is off. BLC will only
function with a manual iris lens when the Electronic Iris feature is switched on. For direct drive
and video drive lenses, BLC will still function even though the Electronic Iris feature is switched
off.

DISCRETE COSINE TRANSFER ON/OFF
Digital transmission uses video compression (usually based upon the difference in subsequent
frames) and the required bandwidth is therefore dependent upon the difference in scene
content. Features such as AGC and sharpness enhancement etc., can generate signal noise
which will be interpreted as a change in scene content and increase the bandwidth required to
transmit the video information. The Discrete Cosine Transfer (DCT) feature may be used to limit
the system bandwidth requirements when the camera is connected to a digital network via an
encoder. When set to on, the cameras AGC circuit is limited to 12dB and chroma suppression
is increased. The default setting is off.
SHARPNESS ON/OFF
This feature can increase the apparent sharpness of the perceived image by enhancing the
edges of objects within the scene. The default setting is off.
GAMMA SELECTION
Two different gamma correction options are available 0.45 and 1.0. Use this switch to select
0.45 to provide increased visibility within the darker areas of a scene, or 1.0 for a more linear
response. The default setting is 0.45.
AUTOMATIC GAIN CONTROL (AGC) ON/OFF
The Automatic Gain Control feature can improve picture quality when the level of scene
illumination is low. Select on or off. For most applications, the AGC feature should be on and is
therefore the default setting.
ELECTRONIC IRIS (EI) ON/OFF
The Electronic Iris (EI) feature compensates for excessive light levels by automatically adjusting
the shutter speed of the camera. Select on or off. The default setting is off.
SYNCHRONISATION SELECTION (LL/INT)
This switch is used to select the synchronisation mode of the camera. When the camera is
connected to an AC supply, the Line-lock (LL) mode can be used. This locks the cameras
frame rate to the mains frequency so that each camera in the system is triggered at the same
point on the supplys AC-cycle. See also Line Lock Phase Adjustment Potentiometer.
The default setting is INT.
POWER LED ON/OFF
In normal operation, the LED on the front panel of the camera is illuminated when power is
connected to the camera. This can cause problems with reflections when the camera is
located inside a camera housing or dome enclosure. Switch L, figure 1, allows the LED to be
turned on or off. The default setting is on.

PEAK WHITE INVERSION ADJUSTMENT POTENTIOMETER
The Peak White Adjustment potentiometer allows you to set the threshold point at which the
Peak White Inversion feature becomes active when it is switched on. See also Peak White
Inversion on/off.
LINE LOCK PHASE ADJUSTMENT POTENTIOMETER
When the camera is in line-lock mode it is possible to adjust the point on the AC cycle at which
the camera triggers. This facility is provided so that cameras that are connected to different
mains phases may still be synchronised.
The line lock phase adjustment potentiometer allows the line lock phase trigger point to be
adjusted by ±120
O
. Rotating the potentiometer clockwise advances the trigger point and turning
it anticlockwise retards the trigger point. The factory default setting is the zero crossing point.
If all cameras in a system are on the same mains phase then no line lock phase adjustment
should be madesee also Synchronisation Selection (LL/INT).
DD LENS LEVEL ADJUSTMENT POTENTIOMETER
The DD lens level is controlled by this potentiometer. The video output signal is converted into a
DC voltage by circuitry within the camera. The potentiometer sets a reference voltage against
which this derived DC voltage is compared. If the DC voltage is less than the reference level,
the lens iris opening is increased. If the DC voltage is greater than the reference level, the lens
iris opening is decreased. This control loop attempts to continually match the DC voltage derived
from the video signal, to the reference voltage set by the potentiometer. This feature allows the
installer to set the required video output amplitude (e.g. 1V pk-pk) that the lens should strive to
maintain.
DD PEAK AVERAGE ADJUSTMENT POTENTIOMETER
This potentiometer determines how a DD lens reacts to the scene illumination. If the potentiometer
is set towards peak, the brighter areas of the scene will be correctly exposed potentially
resulting in other areas of the scene being too dark. If the main area of interest in the scene is
particularly bright, then the setting should be towards peak. If the brighter areas of the scene
are not of interest, the setting should be more towards average. This may result in the
highlights within the scene being over-exposed but should improve the contrast in the darker
areas of the scene.
This feature is integral to video drive lenses. The level and peak circuitry included in the camera
means that it is possible to replicate the performance of video drive lenses when using DD
(Direct or D.C. drive) lenses which are typically less expensive.
AUTO-IRIS LENS TYPE SELECTOR SWITCH (VIDEO DRIVE OR DIRECT DC DRIVE)
This switch allows you to select the type of automatic iris lens that is connected to the
connector on the side of the camera. Default setting is DD (Direct or D.C. drive).

AUTO-IRIS LENS CONNECTOR
All cameras within the range can be used with lenses fitted with automatic irises (either direct
drive, DC drive or video drive types). The lenses are connected to the camera via a 4-pin
square socket located at the front of the camera. The type of auto-iris lens (either video drive
or direct / DC drive) is selected by a two position switch located behind the doorsee also
Auto-iris lens Selector Switch.
SEPARATED Y/C VIDEO OUTPUT CONNECTOR
This connector provides a separated Y/C (luminance and chrominance) video output.
COMPOSITE VIDEO OUTPUT BNC CONNECTOR
To obtain a 1.0V [pk-pk] composite video signal, connect a video coaxial cable terminated with
a 75 Ohm BNC connector to the BNC socket marked VIDEO OUT. For cameras with twisted-pair
video outputs, ensure that the Video Output Type Selector switch is set to CVsee Video
Output Type Selector switch.
TWISTED-PAIR VIDEO OUTPUT TERMINALS (SUFFIX ...TP CAMERAS ONLY)
These terminals provide a composite video output signal which may be transmitted over a
twisted-pair connection to equipment furnished with a suitable receiver. Ensure that the Video
Output Type Selector switch is set to TPsee Video Output Type Selector switch. Remove
the blue connector to connect the twisted pair. Ensure that the connection polarity is observed
in relation to the connected twisted pair receiver.
NOTES:
Cable runs of up to 3000ft (approx. 1km) with an active receiver may be used; 1000ft (300m)
with a passive receiver.
Use unshielded twisted-pair (UTP), Category 2 or better, 24 AWG or thicker, stranded or solid
core.
For safety, do not run the unshielded twisted-pair cable alongside high-voltage carrying cables.
The twisted-pair output cannot be used at the same time as the Composite Video output .
VIDEO OUTPUT TYPE SELECTOR SWITCH CV/TP (SUFFIX ...TP CAMERAS ONLY)
This switch is used to set the type of video output from the camera. The camera may be set to
Composite (CV) or Twisted-pair (TP).

POWER SUPPLY
Cameras are available in AC mains, and AC and DC low voltage types. The voltage required
to operate the camera is clearly marked on the rear panel of the camera. Low
voltage cameras must be powered from a UL listed class 2 power supply. The typical
power consumption of a camera is less than 5 Watts.
Mains power supply
Cameras that are intended to operate directly from the mains supply are fitted with a non-
detachable power supply cord. The voltage of operation is clearly marked on the rear panel of
the camera. REFER TO THE WIRING INSTRUCTION LABEL ATTACHED TO THE SUPPLY CORD
and terminate the cord with the appropriate mains plug fitted with a 3A fuse.
MAINS CAMERAS MUST BE CONNECTED TO A PROTECTIVE EARTH GROUND.
Ensure that a secure means of isolation from the mains is provided for the camera in accordance
with the national wiring regulations of the country of installation.
Auto-switching power supply
Cameras fitted with an automatic switching power supply operate between 11-28 VDC and
20-29 VAC. Connections are indicated above the terminals on the rear panel of the camera.
The power supply must be a UL listed class 2 type.
LENS SELECTION
Suitable lens types are C and CS mount in fixed iris, manual iris, auto iris or direct drive versions.
Sizes are shown below. Cameras are factory set for CS mount lenses. If using a C mount lens,
rotate the back focus adjustment mechanism fully clockwise (when viewed from the front of
the camera) before fitting the lenssee Back Focus Adjustment.

BACK FOCUS ADJUSTMENT
There are two adjustment points accessible from the top and bottom of the camera housing (7,
figure 1), that are used to adjust the back focal length or picture focus. The range of adjustment
allows both C and CS mount lenses to be used without the need for a spacer ring. To use the
back focus mechanism:
1. Unlock the back focus mechanism using the Back Focus adjustment lock (8, figure 1).
2. Rotate the backfocus adjustment ring as required. When viewed from the front of the
camera, clockwise adjustment moves the CCD sensor away from the back of the lens;
counter clockwise adjustment moves the CCD sensor towards the back of the lens
3. Lock the back focus mechanism.
INSTALLING FIXED IRIS LENSES
1. Turn the back focus adjustment ring fully clockwise (when viewed from the front)see
Back Focus Adjustment.
2. Fit the lens to the camera.
3. If the lens has a focussing ring fitted, set it to infinity (¥) and then adjust the back focus
see Back Focus Adjustment.
4. Ensure the Electronic Iris (EI) and Automatic Gain Control (AGC) features are both turned
ON.
INSTALLING MANUAL IRIS LENSES
1. Turn the back focus adjustment ring fully clockwise (when viewed from the front)see
Back Focus Adjustment.
2. Fit the lens to the camera.
3. Turn the Electronic Iris (EI) and Automatic Gain Control (AGC) features OFF.
4. If the lens has a focussing ring fitted, set it to infinity (¥) and then adjust the back focus
see Back Focus Adjustment.
5. With typical scene illumination, set the lens iris for the correct exposure. This can be
achieved either visually, or by using an oscilloscope to set the output of the camera to 1V
peak-peak.
6. Ensure the Electronic Iris (EI) and Automatic Gain Control (AGC) features are both turned
ON.

INSTALLING DIRECT (OR D.C.) DRIVE LENSES
1. Turn the back focus adjustment ring fully clockwise (when viewed from the front)see
Back Focus Adjustment.
2. Fit the lens to the camera and connect it according to the diagram below.
The maximum load for this type of lens must not exceed 25mA
3. Set the Auto Iris lens selector (switch 5, figure 1) to DD.
4. Turn the Electronic Iris (EI) and Automatic Gain Control (AGC) features OFF.
5. If the lens has a focussing ring fitted, set it to infinity (¥) and then adjust the back focus
see Back Focus Adjustment.
6. With typical scene illumination, set the DD Lens Level adjustment potentiometer (3, figure 1)
lens iris for the correct exposure. This can be achieved either visually, or by using an
oscilloscope to set the output of the camera to 1V peak-peak.
7. If the scene lighting conditions are extremely uneven, it may be necessary to adjust the DD
Peak Average potentiometer (4, figure 1)see DD Peak Average Adjustment
Potentiometer .
8. Ensure the Automatic Gain Control (AGC) features is turned ON.
INSTALLING VIDEO DRIVE LENSES
1. Turn the back focus adjustment ring fully clockwise (when viewed from the front)see
Back Focus Adjustment.
2. Fit the lens to the camera and connect it according to the diagram below.
The maximum load for this type of lens must not exceed 50mA
3. Set the Auto Iris lens selector (switch 5, figure 1) to AI.
4. Turn the Electronic Iris (EI) and Automatic Gain Control (AGC) features OFF.
5. If the lens has a focussing ring fitted, set it to infinity (¥) and then adjust the back focus
see Back Focus Adjustment.

INSTALLING VIDEO DRIVE LENSES
6. With typical scene illumination, set the Lens Level adjustment potentiometer for the correct
exposure. This can be done visually. More accurate results will be achieved using a video
level meter or oscilloscope to set the output of the camera to 1V peak-peak.
7. If the scene lighting conditions are extremely uneven, it may be necessary to adjust the
lenss Peak Average potentiometer. Refer to the lens instructions.
8. Ensure the Automatic Gain Control (AGC) features is turned ON.
CAMERA MOUNTING
Mounting points are provided on the top and bottom of the camera and are used to mount the
camera on a bracket or tripod. They are designed to accept standard photographic mounting
bolts (1/4" BSW or 20 UNC). The mounting bracket must be capable of supporting the weight of
the camera and its lens. In cases where the lens is substantially heavier than the camera, it is
better to use the mounting point on the lens itself.
NOTE: Some installation codes dictate that the mounting bracket must be capable of supporting
up to four times the combined weight of the camera and lens.
The mounting bracket is not evaluated by UL..
