DO NOT
• Obstruct the driver or ports of the Tantra subwoofer, as
that will hinder its performance.
• Place the subwoofer in any position other than in horizon
tal orientation with the feet firmly on a stable surface.
• Never place on its side or resting on the back, where the
terminals are located.
• Place the subwoofer near a heat source or in an area
where it could be subject to moisture or excessive
humidity.
INSTALLATION
Connecting the LFE Audio Input
(See Diagram 2)
1. If your surround receiver or amplifier has a single subwoof-
er (LFE) output, plug it into the LFE input (see Diagram 2).
CAUTION: Only make connections when the Tantra sub-
woofer is turned off.
2. The LFE Input/Outputs accept the LFE Subwoofer Output
signal from your receiver/amplifier (if so equipped) but by-
pass the crossover in the Tantra subwoofer. This is appropri-
ate for use with the LFE filtered audio signal from the receiv-
er/amplifier. Signal smoothness through the critical crossover
area is maximized since the low and high pass filtering takes
place in the receiver/amplifier. This filtering is more precise
preventing overlap of crossover points that may occur if the
LPF and HPF controls are set too close together because of
inaccurate settings.
Connecting the Line Level Audio Inputs and
Outputs
(See Diagram 1)
1. If your receiver or amplifier has a built-in preamplifier, the
left and right Pre-outputs can be connected to the line-
level inputs (see Diagram 3).
CAUTION: Only make connections when the Tantra sub-
woofer is turned off.
INTRODUCTION
Congratulations on your selection of a new Tantra Series
subwoofer from Tantra Audio, a leader in quality and tech-
nology for the new era of audio entertainment. The Tantra
subs, like all our products, are designed in the USA to meet
the needs of discriminating users, with the features needed
to ensure greater convenience, utility and value over the
long term.
Each of the Tantra subwoofers offers practically any control
function one could want right on the front panel: Power
On/Off Indicator; Volume; selectable EQ with presets for
“Movie, “Rock” and “Jazz”; selectable Phase presets; Low
Pass Frequency adjustment from 40Hz to 120Hz; and High
Pass Frequency adjustment from 60Hz to 160Hz for line-level
outputs and High Pass Frequency On Off switch.
Moreover, the Tantra subs come with their own remote
controllers for one-touch selection of primary functions like
Power On/Off, EQ, Phase, Volume and Mute. But perhaps
the greatest benefit of a Tantra sub is its ability to deliver
tight bass of amazing depth and accuracy, no matter how
demanding the audio source might be.
The Tantra 12 and 10 subwoofers provide accurate bass to
any audio system and are designed to work in conjunction
with other audio components. They can be connected to
any multichannel surround receiver that has a subwoofer
output, any receiver that has a built-in preamplifier, or any
receiver equipped with speaker-level outputs. The pass-
through feature of the Tantra subwoofers allows the left and
right line-level input signals to be fed out of the unit to other
amplifiers or system components.
PLACEMENT
The Tantra subwoofer will provide the best possible perfor-
mance when it is placed in a corner along the same wall as
the front speakers. Because the unit is magnetically shield-
ed, it’s safe to position it near a TV screen or other video
device. Keep the following points in mind when choosing a
place for the subwoofer:
DO
• Place the Tantra subwoofer with its feet resting on a flat,
solid surface.
• Place the subwoofer in a well-vented area to provide
proper cooling. If used in an area that lacks proper ven
tilation, such as a cabinet or rack, it may be necessary to
install one or more small fans to generate air movement.

Speaker Outputs
2. The Line Level Input/Output L/R connectors on the back
panel accept the signal from your receiver/amplifier and
filter it using the Tantra subwoofer’s internal LPF and HPF
crossover filters. This method is appropriate if you’re certain
the audio signal to the sub is not crossover-filtered (meaning
there is no low-pass filtering).
3. Sources connected to the left and right Line Level Inputs
can be forwarded to other components or amplifiers by
connecting to the corresponding Line Level Output jacks.
If your receiver or amplifier has a built-in preamplifier, the
left and right Pre-amp inputs can be connected to the Line
Level Outputs (see Diagram 3). Use the Hi Pass Frequency
control on the subwoofer front panel to adjust the highpass
crossover.
Connecting The Speaker Wires
1. Follow these instructions when using the Speaker Level
Outputs of your receiver or amplifier for connection to
the Tantra subwoofer. (See Diagram 4) For best results in
runs up to 75’, use speaker wire of at least 18-gauge. For
runs exceeding that distance, we recommend the use of
14-gauge wire. However, wire larger than 14-gauge is not
recommended because it may not fit into the subwoofer
terminals. For best results, strip all wire insulation no more
than 3/8” from the end before inserting the wire into the
terminals.
2. Strip 3/8” of the insulation from the end of the speaker
wire.
3. Connect the wires from the other speakers in the system
to the back panel and connect the wires from the sub to
the receiver/amplifier. Please observe the proper polar-
ity of the connections, matching positive (+) to positive
and negative (-) to negative (see Diagram 5). Two termi-
nal blocks on the back panel—Speaker Level Input and
Speaker Level Output (the latter with a high-pass crossover
point set at 130Hz), each with its own positive and negative
L/R jacks—let you route the signal from the amplifiers to the
front left and right speakers using the sub to fill in the bass
frequencies below 130 Hz.
Other Features
1. Audio Sense. The Tantra can automatically sense when
audio signals are present at it’s Speaker, Line, or LFE Inputs.
When the Audio Sense Toggle Switch is set to the Audio
Sense” position, the Tantra will turn On within 1 second when
audio starts from the receiver/amplifier and will turn Off in 1
to 2 minutes after audio stops (receiver/amplifier is turned
Off). When the Audio Sense Toggle Switch is set to Always
On”, the Tantra will always stay on, unless turned Off by the
IR remote or the main Power switch.
2. In Trigger. When a 3.5mm plug is inserted into the In
Trigger jack, the Tantra can be turned On and Off by an ex-
ternal voltage source of 4 to 30V DC. Such a trigger source
may be a trigger output on your Receiver/Amp or a small
DC power supply plugged into an Aux. AC Outlet that is
switched On and Off with the Receiver/Amp.
3. Direct IR Control. The sensor for the internal IR Receiver
on the Tantra subwoofer front panel is located between
the LPF and HPF controls (see Diagram 7). It can be used
for direct IR control of the Tantra using the included remote
control, if conditions permit. You must have a direct line of
site view to the Tantra IR sensor. This sensor will also function
when the IR RCVR and Ext. IR Inputs are connected.
DIAGRAM 4:
Speaker Level
Input/Outputs
4. IR RCVR jack. This jack permits the use of SpeakerCraft
IR Receivers that use a mating Quad, 4-circuit 3.5mm plug,
such as models IRC-1.1, IRC-2.1., etc. This is particularly use-
ful when room conditions do not allow a direct view of the
built-in IR sensor on the Tantra front panel. Simple plug the
IRC-x.x into the IR RCVR jack and place it on a shelf, table
top or other location that permits a direct line of view for
aiming the handheld remote control.
5. Ext. IR Input. The External IR Input connector on the Tantra
back panel is provided so that the unit can be controlled
along with the other components in a network IR-controlled
entertainment system. Simply connect a 3.5mm mini plug
cable from an IR output port on the network to this Ext. IR
Input jack.
OPERATION
Power
To turn the AC Power ON to the Tantra (after all connections
have been made), use the Power switch on the back panel.
This places the Tantra in a standby “Off” mode. The Power
indicator on the front panel will turn red (See Diagram 7).
To turn the Tantra On to the Active” mode, use the POWER
button on the included remote control (Diagram 6). The
Power indicator on the front panel will turn green and the
unit will play. When you press POWER again, the Tantra re-
turns to the “Off” or standby mode and the Power indicator
turns red.
Equalization
Use this control to set the overall frequency balance of the
subwoofer bass frequencies with the higher frequencies
of other speakers in the system, so that it suits the listen-
ing environment and the type of music played. Press the
Equalization button to select between Movie, Rock and Jazz
in combination with various music selections. Additionally,
these parameters can be changed to suit specific types of
musical selections such as action/adventure movies, Rock,
Jazz and concert performances.
Low Pass Frequency
Use this control to adjust the low frequency range of the Tan-
tra subwoofer. Various kinds of audio material can influence
the setting, but generally the goal is to achieve a good
crossover point between the subwoofer and the main L and
R speakers. If the main speakers cannot support very much
in the low frequency range, then rotate this control to a
higher frequency setting. If the main speakers are large and
DIAGRAM 7:
Front-Mounted Controls
can support lower frequencies, then rotate this control to
a lower setting. In general, the LPF and HPF controls should
be set close to the same frequency to achieve a seamless
match in the crossover area between the subwoofer and
the main L and R speakers.
High Pass Frequency
Use this control to adjust the lower frequency limit of the
music fed to the main L and R speakers from the Line Level
Output jacks. In general, adjust this HPF control close to
the same frequency as the LPF control so that a seam-
less match in the crossover area between the subwoofer
and the main L and R speakers is achieved, as mentioned
above.
On / Off Toggle Switch
This switch turns the HPF filters On and Off. In the Off position,
the HPF control does not function and the main L and R
speakers are fed the full range of audio frequencies, with-
out bass limitation. Use this position only if your main L and
R speakers are large full range types that can support low
frequencies at full power.
Phase
This control toggles the phase of the bass frequencies fed
to the subwoofer between 0° and 180°. Press the Phase but-
ton and then try the two modes in combination with vari-
ous audio materials. Choose the setting that offers the best
presence and definition in subwoofer output. In general, the
best position will be the one that results in the heaviest bass
output.
