Chapter 1. About the secure hard drive
This chapter provides product information about the ThinkPad USB 3.0 Secure Hard Drive (referred to as
secure hard drive).
Product description
The secure hard drive is a portable, light-weight, and high-speed USB (Universal Serial Bus) 3.0 standard
option that offers high-level data security. You can transfer data using the integrated USB cable on the
secure hard drive or the provided USB 3.0 Y cable. In addition to regular USB 3.0 hard disk drive functions, it
also provides you with an easy-to-use full disk encryption solution. All the functions are integrated into the
secure hard drive; therefore, you can access the secure hard drive and manage passwords without using
other software applications.
The secure hard drive has three working modes: standby mode, administrator mode, and user mode. For
more information about the working modes, refer to Chapter 3 “Use the secure hard drive” on page 7.
Note: Passwords are required for administrator mode and user mode. Accordingly, they are called the
administrator password and the user password.
Your option package includes the following:

Chapter 2. Install the secure hard drive
This chapter provides information about how to install the secure hard drive.
Before you begin
Ensure that you read the following information before installing and using the secure hard drive.
Attention:
Make sure that you use the integrated USB cable on the secure hard drive or the provided USB 3.0 Y
cable to install the secure hard drive. Using any cables other than the two cables might damage the
secure hard drive.
Carefully handle the secure hard drive. When the secure hard drive is not in use or you need to ship it to a
different location, place it in the provided carrying case.
To get reliable performance of the secure hard drive, make sure that the integrated USB cable on the
secure hard drive or the provided USB 3.0 Y cable is connected to the USB connectors on your computer
or to an ac-powered USB hub. Do not connect the two cables to a non-ac-powered USB hub.
Install the secure hard drive
To install the secure hard drive, do one of the following:
Connect the secure hard drive to a USB 3.0 connector on your computer as shown.

.
2. Double-click the secure hard drive icon on your computer and then you can access it.
Enter and exit the working modes
This section provides information about how to enter and exit standby mode, administrator mode, and user
mode of the secure hard drive.
Enter standby mode
Standby mode is the default working mode of the secure hard drive. In this mode, the secure hard drive is
locked; therefore, it cannot be recognized by the operating system. However, standby mode enables you to
enter and switch between administrator mode and user mode.
To enter standby mode, connect the secure hard drive to your computer. When the indicator turns red, it
indicates that the secure hard drive goes into standby mode. For more information about how to connect the
secure hard drive, refer to “Install the secure hard drive” on page 3.
Note: To switch between administrator mode and user mode, you are required to firstly switch to standby
mode, and then you can enter your desired mode.
Enter administrator mode
In administrator mode, you can perform many administrative operations, such as changing the administrator
password, creating up to four user passwords, deleting all user passwords, and setting the auto-lock
function. The secure hard drive is locked in this mode; therefore, it cannot be recognized by the operating
system.

To enter administrator mode, do the following:
1. Connect the secure hard drive to your computer. When the indicator turns red, it indicates that the
secure hard drive goes into standby mode. For more information about how to connect the secure hard
drive, refer to “Install the secure hard drive” on page 3.

Notes: If the indicator blinks in red for a few seconds after you input the administrator password, it
indicates that the secure hard drive has returned to standby mode. You need to go back to step 2 to
enter administrator mode again. This problem is caused by one of the following reasons:
An incorrect administrator password is input in step 3.
No activity is detected within 30 seconds in administrator mode.
Exit administrator mode
To exit administrator mode, hold until the indicator turns red. The secure hard drive goes into standby
mode.
Enter user mode
In user mode, you can access the secure hard drive and change the current user password. The secure hard
drive is unlocked in this mode; therefore, you can use it to transfer data.
To enter user mode, do the following:
1. Connect the secure hard drive to your computer. When the indicator turns red, it indicates that the
secure hard drive goes into standby mode. For more information about how to connect the secure hard
drive, refer to “Install the secure hard drive” on page 3.
2. Input the user password or the administrator password, and then press
. When the indicator turns
green, it indicates that the secure hard drive goes into user mode. If the indicator blinks in red, it
indicates that an incorrect password is input. You can choose either to input again or to reset your
secure hard drive. For more instructions about resetting your secure hard drive, see “Completely reset
the secure hard drive” on page 12.
Note: If you incorrectly input the user password or the administrator password more than three times, the
secure hard drive is under brute-force attack protection. For more information, see “Set up brute-force
attack protection” on page 17.
Exit user mode
Attention: Ensure that you save all documents on the secure hard drive before exiting user mode.
To exit user mode, do one of the following:
Hold
until the indicator turns red.
Click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the notification area on your computer screen. A message will
be displayed, prompting you that you can safely disconnect the secure hard drive from your computer.

Chapter 4. Optional functions
This chapter provides some optional functions of the secure hard drive. You can set up these features for
your need.
Set up and use the one-time-use recovery password
With the one-time-use recovery password (referred to as recovery password), you can create a user
password to access the secure hard drive without formatting the drive when you forget the user password.
The administrator can set up four recovery passwords at most. Once you use the recovery password to
access the secure hard drive, the recovery password will no longer be available. Then you should set up a
new user password to access the secure hard drive. However, you cannot use the recovery password to
unlock the secure hard drive. To set up the recovery password, do the following:
1. Enter administrator mode. See “Enter administrator mode” on page 7 for more information.
2. Press
+8 until the indicator blinks three times in green and then blinks slowly in green.
3. Enter the recovery password and press
. If the recovery password is accepted, the indicator blinks
three times in green.
4. Confirm the recovery password, and then press
. If the recovery password is accepted, the indicator is
on in green and then it is in blue. The secure hard drive is in administrator mode.
5. You can repeat step 2 to 4 to add more recovery passwords. Press
to enter standby mode for your
need.
To use the recovery password, do the following:
1. In standby mode, hold
+7 for five seconds and release once the indicator blinks in red.

times in green.
4. Confirm the user password and press
. If the user password is accepted, the indicator blinks three
times in green and the secure hard drive enters standby mode and the indicator is on in red. You can
access the secure hard drive after inputting the user password.
Set up read-only status and return to read and write status
You can set up the secure hard drive into read-only status and return it to read and write status from both
administrator mode and user mode. If you set up the secure hard drive into read-only status from
administrator mode, you can only return it back to read and write status from administrator mode. If you set
up the secure hard drive into read-only status from user mode, you can change it back to read and write
status from both administrator mode and user mode. When the secure hard drive is unlocked in read-only
mode, the indicator is on in green and blinks once in red every three seconds.
To set up the secure hard drive into read-only status from administrator mode, do the following:
1. Enter administrator mode. See “Enter administrator mode” on page 7 for more information.
2. Hold 7+6 for three seconds until the indicator blinks three times in green and then the indicator is on in
