Introduction
The AIM104-RELAY8/IN8 is an 8-bit PC/104 module providing eight changeover relays
and eight opto-isolated inputs. The module provides up to 1500V electrical isolation
between the PC/104 based control system and the electrical system you are controlling.
The isolation between adjacent channels is limited to 100V by the wiring and connectors.
The power switching rating for the relay contacts is 60W (resistive load). The relays and
board layout are designed to switch voltages up to 220V DC (125V AC), and currents up
to 1.0A. However, the Low Voltage Directive specifies that the product can only be safely
used up to 48V DC.
The board includes jumper options for each digital input to select a 10ms input debounce
filter.
Features
Eight changeover relays with a power switching rating of 60W (resistive load).
Switching voltage up to 48V DC and switching currents up to 1.0A.
Output status readback register.
Relay drivers disabled on power up and reset.
Both normally closed (NC) and normally open (NO) relay terminals are available at
the I/O connector.
Eight opto-isolated inputs.
Opto-input switching voltage: 10V to 30V.
Maximum input frequency: Filter disabled: 10KHz.
Filter enabled: 50Hz.
Input switching time (at 24v): Filter disabled: Switching ON: 5s.
Switching OFF: 50s.
Filter enabled: Switching ON: 10ms.
Switching OFF: 5ms.
All inputs include reverse protection diodes.
Board access LED.
Operating temperature range: -20°C to +70°C.
Power consumption: +5V +/- 0.25V 250mA typical.
MTBF: 91,195 hours (using generic figures from MIL-HDBK-217F at ground benign).

Handling your board safely
Anti-static handling
This board contains CMOS devices. These could be damaged in the event of static
electricity being discharged through them. Observe anti-static precautions at all times
when handling circuit boards. This includes storing boards in appropriate anti-static
packaging and wearing a wrist strap when handling them.
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
The AIM104-RELAY8/IN8 is classified as a ‘component’ with regard to the European
Community EMC regulations and it is the user’s responsibility to ensure that systems
using the board are compliant with the appropriate EMC standards.
The opto-isolation provides a good barrier for noise emissions generated by the high
frequency host PC/104 system. The AIM104-RELAY8/IN8 includes additional filter
components on-board to minimise the emissions of high frequency noise. Because of
this, the earth tab supplied with the module must be connected to the chassis of the
system by a good earth wire.
If the electronic system requires input protection against high voltage transients (to meet
CE requirements), it is recommended that an external interface board is located at the
point where the external wiring enters the electronic system enclosure:
Packaging
Should a board need to be returned to Eurotech, please ensure that it is adequately
packed, preferably in the original packing material.
RoHS compliance
The European RoHS Directive (Restriction on the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances
– Directive 2002/95/EC) limits the amount of six specific substances within the
composition of the product. The AIM104-RELAY8/IN8 is available as an RoHS-6
compliant option and is identified by an -R6 suffix in the product order code. A full RoHS
Compliance Materials Declaration Form is included in Appendix A – RoHS-6 Compliance
- Materials Declaration Form
, page 14. Further information about RoHS compliance is
available on the Eurotech website: www.eurotech.com

Operation
Each relay is switched on by writing a 1 to the relay output register. On power up or reset,
the output latches that drive the relay drivers are disabled. To enable them, write 01 to
address base +1. We recommend that, for system initialisation, you write the output
register with the required relay states before setting the relay enable bit. See the
following diagram:
The status of the opto-inputs is read from I/O address base+1. When an input channel is
switched on, the value read by the host is a 0. See the diagram below:

Use LK1 to set the base address of the module. Inserting a jumper selects a 0 for the
address line value. The following diagrams illustrate the link positions:
