Be sure that these instructions are carefully read and understood before any
operation is attempted. Improper use of this device in some applications may result in
damage or injury. The user is urged to keep this book filed in a convenient location for
future reference.
These instructions may not cover all details or variations in equipment or cover
every possible situation to be met in connection with installation, operation or main-
tenance. Should problems arise that are not covered sufficiently in the text, the pur-
chaser is advised to contact Bristol for further information.
EQUIPMENT APPLICATION WARNING
The customer should note that a failure of this instrument or system, for
whatever reason, may leave an operating process without protection. Depending upon
the application, this could result in possible damage to property or injury to persons.
It is suggested that the purchaser review the need for additional backup equipment
or provide alternate means of protection such as alarm devices, output limiting, fail-
safe valves, relief valves, emergency shutoffs, emergency switches, etc. If additional
in-formation is required, the purchaser is advised to contact Bristol .
RETURNED EQUIPMENT WARNING
When returning any equipment to Bristol for repairs or evaluation, please note
the following: The party sending such materials is responsible to ensure that the
materials returned to Bristol are clean to safe levels, as such levels are defined and/or
determined by applicable federal, state and/or local law regulations or codes. Such
party agrees to indemnify Bristol and save Bristol harmless from any liability or
damage which Bristol may incur or suffer due to such party's failure to so act.
ELECTRICAL GROUNDING
Metal enclosures and exposed metal parts of electrical instruments must be
grounded in accordance with OSHA rules and regulations pertaining to "Design
Safety Standards for Electrical Systems," 29 CFR, Part 1910, Subpart S, dated: April
16, 1981 (OSHA rulings are in agreement with the National Electrical Code).
The grounding requirement is also applicable to mechanical or pneumatic in-
struments that include electrically-operated devices such as lights, switches, relays,
alarms, or chart drives.
EQUIPMENT DAMAGE FROM ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE VOLTAGE
This product contains sensitive electronic components that can be damaged by
exposure to an electrostatic discharge (ESD) voltage. Depending on the magnitude
and duration of the ESD, this can result in erratic operation or complete failure of the
equipment. Read supplemental document S14006 at the back of this manual for
proper care and handling of ESD-sensitive components.

WARRANTY
A. Bristol warrants that goods described herein and manufactured by Bristol are free
from defects in material and workmanship for one year from the date of shipment
unless otherwise agreed to by Bristol in writing.
B. Bristol warrants that goods repaired by it pursuant to the warranty are free from
defects in material and workmanship for a period to the end of the original warranty
or ninety (90) days from the date of delivery of repaired goods, whichever is longer.
C. Warranties on goods sold by, but not manufactured by Bristol, are expressly limited
to the terms of the warranties given by the manufacturer of such goods.
D. All warranties are terminated in the event that the goods or systems or any part
thereof are (i) misused, abused or otherwise damaged, (ii) repaired, altered or
modified without Bristol's consent, (iii) not installed, maintained and operated in
strict compliance with instructions furnished by Bristol, or (iv) worn, injured or
damaged from abnormal or abusive use in service time.
E. THESE WARRANTIES ARE EXPRESSLY IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER
WARRANTIES EXPRESS OR IMPLIED (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION
WARRANTIES AS TO MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR
PURPOSE), AND NO WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, NOR ANY
REPRESENTATIONS, PROMISES, OR STATEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE BY
BRISTOL UNLESS ENDORSED HEREIN IN WRITING. FURTHER, THERE ARE
NO WARRANTIES WHICH EXTEND BEYOND THE DESCRIPTION OF THE
FACE HEREOF.
F. No agent of Bristol is authorized to assume any liability for it or to make any written
or oral warranties beyond those set forth herein.
REMEDIES
A. Buyer's sole remedy for breach of any warranty is limited exclusively to repair or
replacement without cost to Buyer of any goods or parts found by Seller to be
defective if Buyer notifies Bristol in writing of the alleged defect within ten (10) days
of discovery of the alleged defect and within the warranty period stated above, and if
the Buyer returns such goods to Bristol's Watertown office, unless Bristol's Water-
town office designates a different location, transportation prepaid, within thirty (30)
days of the sending of such notification and which upon examination by Bristol
proves to be defective in material and workmanship. Bristol is not responsible for
any costs of removal, dismantling or reinstallation of allegedly defective or defective
goods. If a Buyer does not wish to ship the product back to Bristol, the Buyer can
arrange to have a Bristol service person come to the site. The Service person's
transportation time and expenses will be for the account of the Buyer. However,
labor for warranty work during normal working hours is not chargeable.
B. Under no circumstances will Bristol be liable for incidental or consequential
damages resulting from breach of any agreement relating to items included in this
quotation, from use of the information herein or from the purchase or use by Buyer,
its em-ployees or other parties of goods sold under said agreement.
How to return material for Repair or Exchange
Before a product can be returned to Bristol for repair, upgrade, exchange, or to verify
proper operation, form (GBU 13.01) must be completed in order to obtain a RA (Return
Authorization) number and thus ensure an optimal lead time. Completing the form is very
important since the information permits the Bristol Repair Dept. to effectively and
efficiently process the repair order.

Section 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Series 2808-41A Temperature Transmitters perform temperature measurements and
provide an equivalent current or voltage output signal for application to a controller,
computer, recorder, indicator or similar device.
The model 2808-41A accepts a two-wire or three-wire RTD sensor. It operates from a dc
supply (6 to 42 V Max.) and provides either a 1 to 5 Vdc output or a 4-20 mA output into a
250-ohm (minimum) load. The features of the model 2808-41A are identified in Tables 1-1
through 1-3.

Transmitters typically include sensor assemblies. These assemblies, which are offered for a
variety of measurement applications, screw into the bottom .5 - 14 N.P.T. threaded opening
of the transmitter. The threaded opening will also accommodate sensor adapters with
adjustable compression fittings.
RTD transmitters require 100-ohm platinum resistance sensors (IEC 751 Class B); these
transmitters may be calibrated to any temperature range within the limits of -58° to 662° F
(-50° to +350° C).
General calibration adjustments are performed using zero and span potentiometers (15-
turn type). Course zero and span selections are made via two internal switches.

1.2 MODEL NUMBER IDENTIFICATION
A Data Plate affixed to the transmitter lists the complete model number. The complete
model number provides identification of the features and options. Table 1-1 provides a
model breakdown for the RTD transmitter.

1.3 MODELS APPROVED FOR HAZARDOUS AREAS
Transmitter models certified for operation in hazardous areas by Underwriters
Laboratories (UL) will have the appropriate logo inscribed on the instrument data plate.
These models are intended for use in the following hazardous locations:
Explosion-proof for Class I, Division 1, Groups C and D. (Conduit Seals Not Required)
Nonincendive for Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C and D.
The National Electric Code, Article 500, defines the above classes and divisions as follows:
Class I Atmospheres: Contains flammable gases or vapors.
Class II Atmospheres: Contains combustible dust particles.
Division 1:
Where continuous exposure, or threat of fire or explosion may be present due to accident
or uncommon occurrence.
Division 2:
Where threat of fire or explosion is not normally present, and not likely to result from
abnormal occurrence.
Groups A through D:
Cover various flammable gases and liquids such as ethyl-ether vapor, gasoline, acetone,
etc.

INSTALLATION & SERVICE
2.1 INSTALLATION
Series 2808-41A Temperature Transmitters are provided with two .5 - 14 N.P.T. threaded
conduit openings. Either opening can be mated to an electrical conduit. Notice that these
threads are extra deep; it is essential that no less than five full threads of the conduit are
engaged. All fittings must be secure and the transmitter cover must be in place and properly
tightened before applying power.
In some applications, a remote RTD is interfaced to the transmitter. In these applications,
the sensor probe is installed at the process and is connected to the transmitter via wiring
run through the bottom of the transmitter’s housing (in conduit). The RTD sensor wiring is
connected to connector block P1 on the 1-5 Vdc or 4-20 mA RTD Sensor Interface Module.
This arrangement isolates the transmitter from the process environment and generally
provides more flexible service access. When using this approach, the sensor leads should not
be connected to the transmitter’s terminals until the probe has been secured and the
transmitter has been secured to the mounting conduit pipe; otherwise, the leads may twist
and break as the transmitter is tightened.
The RTD Sensor Interface Module is located behind the Temperature Transmitter’s Rear
Cover (see Figure 2-1).
In the case of units with built-in RTDs, the probe is screwed into the bottom of the
transmitter (the sensing port) as a unified assembly. This assembly can then be screwed
directly into the process pipe/fixture. In the case of the Spring Loaded RTD, the assembly
can be screwed directly into the process pipe/fixture, into an extension (that is mated to a
thermowell) or into a thermowell that is screwed in to the process pipe/fixture. While this
method provides a compact assembly, it should not be used on processes where the
measured temperature will exceed the temperature limits of the transmitter.
** WARNING **
Never mount a 2808-41A with an attached probe directly to a process pipe/fixture
having a temperature that will exceed the unit’s environmental specification.
Extremely high temperatures will affect transmitter accuracy and, if excessive,
could cause permanent damage. If the 2808-41A is wired to an unprotected control
loop, a failure of this type could result in property damage and injury to persons.
The sensor is installed so that the probe is in contact with the measure media (air, liquid,
gas, etc.). In situations where the media is of a substance that can cause destruction of the
probe material, the use of a protective well assembly is recommended. The selected well
material must be able to resist process corrosion and provide the necessary protection and
isolation for the probe. Wells must only be used with spring-loaded sensors to meet
requirements for equipment protection (see Figure 2-10 and Tables 2-1 & 2-2).
The electrical power connections are brought out through a threaded conduit port on the
side of the transmitter body. Remove the protective plastic shipping plug (if included) when
attaching the conduit. RTD wiring is always run through the bottom of the transmitter.

2.2 FIELD WIRING NOTES
Improper wiring can cause equipment damage to equipment and electrical shock, or injury
to users. Only technically qualified persons should perform wiring and service procedures.
2.2.1 Electrical Ports
The transmitter contains a .50 - 14 N.P.T. electrical port that mates with the conduit pipe or
an appropriate threaded adapter.
** NOTE **
When installing the transmitter, the conduit connections
must be secured with no less than five threads fully engaged.
In some applications the conduit may be subject to condensation build-up that could seep
into the electrical housing. This situation can be remedied by installing the transmitter so
that it is above the level of the process connection. Any moisture will drain away from the
transmitter body via gravity feed.
2.2.2 Access to Field Wiring Terminals
Obtain access to the terminals by unscrewing the end cover and removing it. To facilitate
the removal of a tight cover, insert a flat metal bar or similar tool between the cover
protrusions and apply moderate leverage to loosen it; be sure to secure the transmitter body
so that excessive force is not transmitted from the bar to the conduit or process connection.
When replacing the cover, tighten it only by hand until all the threads are engaged and the
cover gasket is compressed.
2.2.3 Lead Dress
When bringing the signal leads through the conduit opening, do not dress them tightly to
the terminals. Provide about three inches of lead slack to reduce strain on the terminals and
make connections more manageable.
2.2.4 Recommended Wiring Practices
The following list should be checked when connecting the transmitter to a device.
A. Perform all wiring in accordance with the National Electrical Code.
B. Use two-wire, twisted pair with shield of suitable AWG size.
C. Ground the shield only at the input of the device to which the transmitter will be
connected.
D. Connect the green ground screw to an approved earth ground.
E. Run the instrument wiring in conduit approved for explosion-proof installations in
accordance with NEC and local authority.
F. Provide optional transient protection where applicable.

2.2.5 Connecting Sensors
Series 2808-41A Temperature Transmitters are specified for use with RTD sensors. Figure
2-1 shows the method of connecting a 3-wire and 2-wire RTD bulb to a model 2808-41A. The
RTD sensor should be a 100-ohm platinum type that conforms to the IEC 751 Class B
specification.
2.2.6 Signal/Power Connections
The voltage applied across the transmitter must be maintained within 6 to 36 Vdc; the
maximum supply voltage is 42 Vdc (with a loop resistance as shown in Figures 2-2 & 2-3.
The use of two-wire, twisted-pair, shielded wiring is recommended for signal/power wiring.
Shielded wire will minimize signal errors caused by electromagnetic interference (EMI) and
radio frequency interference (RFI).
The shield should only be grounded at the power common return of the input device. Shields
should not be connected to ground at the transmitter or midpoint in the loop, as such
practices will introduce ground loops and cause signal errors.
2.2.7 Grounding
The transmitter is provided with a grounding screw as shown in Figures 2-1 and 2-2. This
screw must be connected to a reliable earth ground to minimize electrical interference and
to protect users from electrical shock.
2.3 WIRING OF 4-20mA SIGNAL/POWER LOOP
The 4-20mA signal/power loop can be powered in two ways. Figure 2-2 shows the loop
powered by the receiving device (controller, recorder, etc.), while Figure 2-3 shows the loop
powered by an external supply. In both instances, the 4-20mA current flows through a 250W
load resistor and develops a corresponding 1-5V input for the receiving device.
Signal Shielding: Use twisted wire, shielded cable covered by insulating material for the
signal/power wiring. When properly grounded, this cable will minimize pickup of elec-
tromagnetic, and radio frequency interference.
The shield lead of the cable is typically grounded at the input of the receiving device
(computer controller, recorder, etc.) as shown in Figures 2-2 and 2-3. Never connect the
other end of this shield to the transmitter enclosure or attempt to ground the shield at more
than one point along the wire path. Multiple grounds will cause signal errors at the input of
the receiving device.
Although it is recommended to connect the cable’s shield to the power common return of the
receiving device, the actual connection point may differ depending on the design and
application of the device. In some instances, better noise immunity can be had by connecting
the cable shield to the chassis or a designated shield terminal on the device. Check the
instruction manual of the receiving device for the recommended connection points.
