WORK ON THE EQUIPMENT.
(2) ALWAYS DE-ENERGIZE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY CIRCUITS IF A
CIRCUIT BREAKER CANNOT BE REMOVED TO A SAFE WORK LOCATION.
(3) DRAWOUT CIRCUIT BREAKERS SHOULD BE LEVERED (RACKED) OUT TO
THE DISCONNECT POSITION.
(4) ALL CIRCUIT BREAKERS SHOULD BE SWITCHED TO THE OFF POSITION
AND MECHANISM SPRINGS DISCHARGED.
FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE STEPS FOR ALL PROCEDURES DESCRIBED IN
THIS INSTRUCTION LEAFLET COULD RESULT IN DEATH, BODILY INJURY, OR
PROPERTY DAMAGE.
m WARNING
THE INSTRUCTIONS CONTAINED IN THIS IL AND ON PRODUCT LABELS
HAVE TO BE FOLLOWED. OBSERVE THE FIVE SAFETY RULES:
– DISCONNECTING
ENSURE THAT DEVICES CANNOT BE ACCIDENTALLY RESTARTED
VERIFY ISOLATION FROM THE SUPPLY
EARTHING AND SHORT-CIRCUITING
COVERING OR PROVIDING BARRIERS TO ADJACENT LIVE PARTS
DISCONNECT THE EQUIPMENT FROM THE SUPPLY. USE ONLY AUTHORIZED

MAINTENANCE INTERVALS AS WELL AS THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR REPAIR
AND EXCHANGE MUST BE STRICTLY ADHERED TO PREVENT INJURY TO
PERSONNEL AND DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT.
General information
Series NRX fixed circuit breakers are available in rear connect
(Figure 1) and front connect configurations (Figure 2). The arc hood
on a Series NRX fixed circuit breaker is positioned over the breakers
arc chambers to primarily direct arc gas discharge (Figure 1 and
Figure 2). An arc hood is used on all fixed circuit breakers whether
they are configured for rear or front connection. The front connect
configuration also contains a shroud mounted on the load side of the
breaker (Figure 2).
Both breaker configurations can be surface mounted (Figure 1) or
fixed mounted (Figure 2). Mounting feet can be used to fix mount
breakers to a vertical surface (Figure 2). Refer to IL01301020E for
mounting instructions.

m CAUTION
DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED TORQUE VALUES WHEN MAKING
BOLTED CONNECTIONS TO THE EQUIPMENT OR TO THE ADAPTERS
THEMSELVES, ALL WHICH HAVE PRE-TAPPED HOLES. IN ADDITION,
ANY CONNECTION HARDWARE USED SHOULD BE THE EXACT LENGTH
REQUIRED AND SHOULD NOT EXTEND OUT PAST THE MOUNTING
HOLE. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE REQUIREMENTS COULD RESULT IN
EQUIPMENT DAMAGE AND/OR FAILURE.
m IMPORTANT
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT APPROPRIATE INTERPHASE BARRIERS BE
INSTALLED BETWEEN INSIDE AND OUTSIDE PRIMARY TERMINALS WITH
ALL REAR CONNECTED CONFIGURATIONS TO ENSURE INSULATION
INTEGRITY. IF INTERPHASE BARRIERS ARE ORDERED FROM EATON,
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS ARE PROVIDED WITH THE BARRIERS.

There are several connection configurations that can be used on the
Series NRX front connect. The list of available connections is shown
in Figure 9. These connectors can be used in any combination at
both the line and the load side as needed for the application.

Front connect kit installation
In order to attach cable terminals or bus conductor extensions to the
line and load bus adapters, proceed with the following steps.
Step 1
Remove the four screws (or five screws for a four-pole breaker)
while holding the front of the arc hood. Also remove the four screws
(or five screws for a four-pole breaker) to remove the front of the
shroud that is mounted on the load side (Figure 10).

1. Bolt the bus conductor extensions to the breaker bus adapters
using the provided hardware. Torque the bolted connections to
30 ft-lb (40.7 N∙m).
Make sure that the hardware used to make the connections
does not extend out past the adapter surface. Check that the
bolt goes all the way through the bus adapters.
2. Once the bolted connections are made, replace the baffles
removed in Step 3 by sliding them back into position, making sure
that the baffle notches are oriented toward the breaker. The bus
extensions will fit through the space available between the baffles
and the arc hood. Replace secondary block assembly shield.
3. Replace the secondary contact block assembly previously
removed in Step 4.
4. Replace front of the arc hood and the front of the shroud
previously removed in Step 1 and Step 2. Replace front cover.
5. Phase barriers made from flexible rubber material are supplied
with the bus extension kit, along with the cable terminals. The
phase barriers should be installed to the right and left of the
center bus connector extension on both the line and the load
sides. These phase barriers provide proper insulation integrity
(Figure 16).
m CAUTION
MAKE SURE THE PHASE BARRIERS FROM STEP 6.5 ARE PROPERLY
INSTALLED BEFORE PLACING THE CIRCUIT BREAKER INTO SERVICE.
FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE REQUIREMENTS COULD RESULT IN
EQUIPMENT DAMAGE AND/OR FAILURE.

NOTICE
Figure 18. Cable terminals torque requirements
Step 7
Cable terminal connections can be made directly to the bus adapters
inside the breaker or to the bus conductor extensions that extend
out of the line and load sides of the breaker (refer to Step 5). Cable
terminals are shown in Figure 19 and described in Table 3.
To complete the connections, proceed with the following steps.
1. Bolt the cable terminals directly to the bus adapters using the
hardware provided (Figure 19). Cable terminals can also be
bolted to the bus connector extensions (Figure 20). Torque the
bolted connections to 30 ft-lb (27 N∙m).

2. Install additional cable terminal connections as required
(Figure 21). Complete cable installation before proceeding
with next step.
Figure 21. Step 7.2—Cable terminals connected directly

3. Replace the front of the arc hood and the shroud as previously
removed in Step 1 and Step 2. The baffles removed in Step 1 are
no longer required in the arc hood if connecting cable terminals
directly to the bus adapter. The newly mounted cable terminals
will now perform the baffles’ function. However, if connecting the
cable terminals to a bus conductor extension, re-install baffles
before replacing the arc hood and shroud.
4. Phase barriers made from a flexible rubber material are supplied
with the cable terminals. If using cable terminals connected to
bus connecter extensions, phase barriers must be installed to
the right and left of the center cable terminal on both the line
and the load sides (to the right and left of the two center cable
terminals for four-pole) (Figure 22). These phase barriers provide
proper insulation integrity.

As an option, customers can order a terminal shield to install at the
line side of the front connect breaker (Figure 23).
