AM 15507 – Carton of 12 pcs. with display
CD, DVD, CD-ROM, VCD -- they are all optical discs.
An optical disc is basically built up in 3 layers. The new multilayered types consist
of more although the principle is the same. The first layer is plastic and is coated
with a layer of reflective metal. Around this there is a layer of plastic that protects
against wear and scratches.
Data is stored in form of ones and zeroes. It is binary numbers that are represented
on a CD by millions of holes, flats and elevations on the disc’s reflective surface.
These are incredibly small changes in the surface of the disc, placed in one,
integrated track. The track on a CD is less than 0.5 microns or a millionth of a
metre, the track is about 5 km long from start to finish. The track on a double-sided
DVD is 48 km.
Reading of the disc is done with a laser beam. The disc reflects the beam to an
optical sensor, a flat is interpreted as the digit one, an elevation or a darkening as
the number zero. The track on a disc starts at its centre and winds its way out to
the outer edge as a spiral. Due to the difference in speed at the far outside and
inside of the disc, the disc player must lower the speed of the disc the further out
on the disc it has to read in order to obtain a uniform reading speed.
With the regular use of a lens cleaner, one ensures the clear and error-free reading
of music, film or data. AM offers a broad assortment of laser lens cleaners for all
types of disc players.
