The Smoke Alarm System Remote Control is used for remotely
testing and hushing the Smoke Alarms without the need for chairs or
ladders. It can also be used as a manual fire alarm by leaving the
TEST switch in the ON position.
WARNING: The Remote Control should be installed by a qualified
electrician in accordance with the Regulations for Electrical Installa-
tions published by the Institute of Electrical Engineers.
1. Disconnect the AC mains supply from the circuit that is going to
be used to power the Smoke Alarms.
2. Locate and install the Smoke Alarms according to the instruction
leaflet supplied with the Smoke Alarm. A maximum of 250 metre (820
feet) of wire can be used (maximum resistance between detectors 50
ohms).
3. Select a suitable location for the Remote Control where it can be
easily reached. Route the two wires i.e. neutral, remote test/hush.
These wires should all be insulated, sheathed, and a 0.75 mm
2
cable
(minimum) should be used. Do not use any wire e.g. coloured green,
that could later be confused with the normal house wiring for the Re
-
mote Test/Hush wire.
4. Remove the face plate from the Remote Control by taking out
the two screws & unscrew the twin switch module. Bring the wires in
through an appropriate knock-out on the switch box. Screw the
switch box to the wall. Connect the wires as shown in figure 2(b). The
neutral must be connected to both switches as shown with a short
length of wire. Similarly the R wire must be connected to both
switches with a shot length of wire. Re-assemble the switch.
5. Connect the AC mains to the circuit. Check that all the Smoke
Alarms green lights are on. Check both switches are functioning cor
-
rectly as outlined below.
Caution: If an
EI 161R or 166R Smoke Alarm is being used without
the remote features do not make any connection to the R terminal.
-Turn on the TEST button.
-Check all the Smoke Alarms sound within 10 seconds and that
the red lights on the Smoke Alarms are flashing every second.
-Turn off the switch. (Turning on the remote TEST switch is equiv
-
alent to pressing all the test buttons on all the Smoke Alarms simulta
-
neously - therefore this also hushes the unit).
-Test all your Smoke Alarms weekly.
If, when the alarm goes off, there is no sign of smoke, heat or noise
to indicate that there is a fire, you should get all the occupants into a
safe place before you start investigating. Check the house carefully
in case there is a small fire smouldering somewhere.
- If it is a nuisance alarm push and hold the HUSH button. All the Ei
161R and 166R alarms will switch to a reduced sensitivity for about
10 minutes and automatically reset. The red LED’s will flash every 10
seconds (instead of 40 seconds) to show the units are in hush. The EI
161R ionisation units will give two short beeps at the end of the hush
period.
