your shed.
Q: When talking about a building size, how do I know which is depth and width?

Model Names:

Montana, Somerset, Columbia, Berkley
and Sequoia
64” wide door opening
Meridian
56” wide door opening
Ocoee, Sherwood, Kingston and
Briarwood
48” wide door opening
Q: What size and style of a building is right for me?
A: Most people run out of floor space before wall space, so one method of determining
what size you might need is to measure all of the big, bulky items (i.e. lawn mowers,
snow blowers, etc.) that will likely be put on the floor of your shed. Don’t forget to add
some extra space to walk around these items. One of the common comments we hear
from customers is "I wish I had bought a larger shed"...so when in doubt, we always
suggest going up one size from what you think you need. This also gives you some
room for growth!
Q: What types of standard building materials do you use?
A: Handy Home sheds are meant to last, therefore we use many of the same building
materials used to construct your home:
40 year treated 4x4 runners
Stud grade wall framing materials (2x3 on Majestic, Princeton, Ocoee,
Sherwood, Kingston, Cumberland and Montana and 2x4 on all other sheds)
7/16 OSB roof sheathing
LP® Smartside Engineered wood siding - treated to resist insects and fungal
decay
PERMITS:
Q: Is a permit required for a Handy Home building to be erected on your property?
A: You will need to check on city ordinances before purchase. Permitting is usually
determined by your township based on the size structure you choose. Additional
charges may be required for adherence to local building codes.
Q: Who is responsible for obtaining a permit?
A: You are responsible for obtaining any necessary permits. If you require signed and
stamped drawings they can be obtained from our customer service department for a
fee 1-800-221-1849.
FOUNDATION:
Q: I have an existing concrete slab, can you build on it?
A: Although the vast majority of our buildings are constructed on our wood floor
system and sufficient for any application, we do have the ability to construct your
Handy Home building on an existing slab provided the slab is level within 1/2" and
appropriately sized. Because of the individual nature of each slab, please contact us to
determine if your slab meets our specifications. Due to the additional installation labor
and extra materials needed to properly secure the shed to your slab, there is no
reduction in overall price.
Q: Can my shed be installed on piers, etc?
A: Yes, but we do not recommend it. We suggest that all sheds be built on concrete
slabs or use solid cement blocks.
PAINT/CAULKING:
Q: Do your sheds come painted?
A: No. You are responsible for painting the shed upon completion. The outside shed
walls are factory primed and ready for paint.
Q: Can you paint my shed for me?
A: No, we do not offer painting services at this time.
Q: Do I need to paint my building right away, what type of paint is recommended,
and should I caulk the joints?
A: Buildings must be painted within 60 days of installation to maintain product
warranty. All raw exterior wood must be primed using a quality exterior primer before
painting. Nail holes, small knots and blemishes can be filled with exterior wood putty
prior to priming. Seal all joints, seams and use an acrylic latex caulk application. All
factory primed siding and trim must be painted using high quality exterior 100%
acrylic-latex paint (we recommend a satin or semi-gloss finish) to protect your
building. Be sure to paint all exposed edges of the siding, especially the bottom edge,
and all six sides (top, bottom, two sides, front and back) of the doors.
Q: What kind of paint should I use for my floor?
A: Use an exterior porch and floor paint. If you plan on storing powered equipment
inside your shed, use garage floor paint.
Q: What kind of paint do you recommend for my storage building?
A: We recommend a premium quality, exterior 100% acrylic latex paint. This paint is
easy to work with and is offered at your local hardware or paint store. Don't forget to
caulk all horizontal seams before painting for a well-protected, professionally finished
result.
POST PURCHASE:
Q: Can my shed be moved after installation?
A: In most cases, depending on the size of the unit and the distance required, your
building can be moved. Please keep in mind that each Handy Home shed is built on
site and moving the building will void your warranty. That is why we request your
presence at the beginning of the construction phase, to ensure you choose the proper
location for your building the first time.
Q: You've already built my shed; but I want more options now.
A: We offer a wide array of options and accessories and we can customize each
building to adequately meet your needs. When placing your order with one of our sales
associates, please be sure to communicate your needs and intended use, they'll ensure
you get the appropriate accessories. If for some reason you feel that an additional
accessory or option is needed at a later date, please give us a call and we'll be glad to
quote you an installed price. Please remember, it's always more cost effective to order
all of your options during the initial purchase.
Q: Can you remove our old shed?
A: We do not offer removal services. Try looking for a shed hauler. Any large truck with
a flatbed would also work well.
Q: What is your recommended maintenance of my new storage shed or gazebo?
A: Like your home, your new storage or recreational building will require
occasional maintenance to insure many years of use and enjoyment. In addition to re-
painting your building as needed, you must perform other maintenance.
Keep all grass and other vegetation trimmed around the entire perimeter of the
building.
Do not mound soil or mulch against the siding of your building.
Buildings which are built on a wood floor (Gazebos excluded), should be constructed
on 4x4 treated runners which resist damage from ground moisture and insects (treated
wood 4x4 runners not included in kit). These runners also elevate your buildings floor,
allowing for important air circulation under the
foundation. This circulation must be maintained to insure long life of your
wood foundation; you must use a lattice or other material that will allow for proper air
circulation.
Do not stack anything against the exterior of your building, such as firewood, for any
period of time.
Locking doorknobs or levers should be sprayed with silicone or other lubricant to
maintain locking mechanism and prevent freezing in cold climates.
We do not recommend insulating or heating your building.
Do not let sprinklers spray your building.
Q: Where can I get a digital copy of the instruction manual?
A: Our manuals can be conveniently downloaded online on HomeDepot.com.
Q: Can I buy replacement doors?
A: Yes, replacement doors start at $175. You can order over the phone at 1-800-221-
1849.
Q: Are your shed installers insured?
A: Having someone in your backyard that you can trust is important. We require all of
our installers to maintain appropriate liability, vehicle and workman's compensation
insurance. In addition, all installers must pass a rigorous background check and
complete our training program before becoming certified as a Handy Home installer.
Q: Should your installers receive a tip?
A: It is not a common practice to tip installers. Installers are already compensated to
install your shed.
Q: Can I receive a refund once installation is completed?
A: Purchase is non-refundable once installation has been completed.
Q: What do I do with defective parts?
A: Give us a call at 1-800-221-1849 and we can send out any replacement parts that you
need or reimburse for parts purchased locally with a copy of the sales receipt that can
be emailed, mailed, or faxed to our corporate office.
Q: Where are you located?
A: Our corporate office resides at 1000 Ternes Road Monroe, Michigan 48162.
