1. Safety Instructions
In the interest of promoting the safest and most efficient use of the Model DS 10DFL Cordless Driver Drill by
all of our customers, it is very important when concluding a sale that the salesperson carefully ensure that
the buyer seriously recognizes the importance of the Handling Instructions, and fully understands the
precautions listed on the Caution Plate and Name Plate attached to each tool.
A. Handling instructions
Salespersons must be thoroughly familiar with the contents of the Handling Instructions in order to offer
appropriate guidance to customers. In particular, salespersons must have a thorough understanding of the
precautions on using cordless tools which differ from those on using ordinary electric power tools.
(1) Before use, ensure that the battery is fully charged.
A new battery is not fully charged. Even if the battery was fully charged at the factory, long periods of
inactivity, such as during shipping, cause the storage battery to lose its charge. Customers must be
instructed to fully recharge the battery prior to use.
(2) When recharging the storage battery, only use the exclusive Model UC 10SFL Charger provided
with the tool.
Due to the designed rapid-charging feature (for full recharging in about 40 minutes), using other battery
chargers is hazardous.
(3) Connect the charger only to an AC power outlet.
The use of any other power source (e.g., DC outlet, fuel-powered generator) will cause the charger to
overheat and burn out.
(4) Do not use any voltage-increasing equipment (e.g., transformer) between the power source and
the charger.
Using the charger at voltage higher than that indicated on the unit will result in malfunction.
(5) Charge the battery in an ambient temperature range of 0°C to 40°C (32°F to 104°F).
Special temperature-sensitive devices are employed in the charger to permit rapid charging. Ensure that
customers are instructed to use the charger in the indicated ambient temperature range. At temperatures
below 0°C (32°F), the thermostat will not function properly, and the storage battery may be overcharged.
At temperatures above 40°C (104°F), the storage battery cannot be sufficiently recharged. The optimum
temperature range is 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F).
(6) The battery charger should not be used continuously.
Recharging more than three storage batteries in succession at high ambient temperature will cause the
temperature of the coils on the transformer to rise and the temperature fuse inserted inside the
transformer could inadvertently melt. After recharging one battery, please wait about 15 minutes before
recharging the next battery.
(7) Do not attempt to disassemble the storage battery or the charger.
Special devices, such as a thermostat, are built into the storage battery and charger to permit rapid
charging. Incorrect parts replacement and/or wiring will cause malfunctions that could result in fire or
other hazards. Instruct customers to bring these units to an authorized service center in the event repair
or replacement is necessary.
PRECAUTIONS ON SALES PROMOTION
-8-
(8) Disposal of the storage battery (Type BCL 1015).
Ensure that all customers understand that the Type BCL 1015 storage battery should be returned to a
Hitachi power tool sales outlet or an authorized service center when the batteries can no longer be
recharged or repaired. If thrown into a fire, the battery may explode.
B. Caution plate
(1) The following cautions are listed on the name plate attached to the main body of the Type DS 10DFL.

2. Inherent Drawbacks of Cordless Driver Drills Requiring Particular
Attention During Sales Promotion
The cordless driver drill offers many advantages, such as use in places where no power source is available,
and easy operation since there is no power cord. However, any cordless tool has certain inherent drawbacks.
Salespersons must be thoroughly familiar with these drawbacks in order to properly advise customers on
the most efficient use of the tool.
A. Suggestions and precautions on efficient use of the tool
(1) Use the cordless driver drill for comparatively light work.
Because cordless driver drills are battery driven, the motor output in these tools is relatively low
compared to conventional electric power tools. Accordingly, these tools are not suitable for the
continuous drilling of many holes in succession or drilling into particularly hard materials, both of which
impose a heavy load. Salespersons should therefore recommend conventional electric power tools for
such heavy work.
(2) Do not insert a foreign object into the body.
A foreign object inserted through a hole may cause failure. Please instruct customers to never insert a
foreign object into the body.
(3) Avoid "locking" of the motor.
Locking of the motor will cause an overload current that could result in motor overheating and/or rapid
deterioration of the battery. Salespersons should advise customers to immediately release the switch and
stop operation in case the motor becomes locked. (A jammed drill bit can be disengaged from the workpiece
material by setting the switch to reverse rotation or manually turning the main body of the tool.)
(4) Variations in the amount of work possible per charge.
Although the nominal chargeable capacity of the storage battery used with the Model DS 10DFL is 1.5 Ah,
the actual capacity may vary within 10% of that value depending on the ambient temperature during use
and charging, and the number of times the battery has been recharged. Note that other factors affecting
the amount of work possible per charge are the working conditions (e.g., ambient temperature, type and
moisture content of the workpiece, sharpness of the drill bit) and operational skill of the user.
(5) Precautions on using HSS Drill Bits.
Although the Model DS 10DFL is designed for drilling capacities of 21 mm (13/16”) in wood, 12 mm
(15/32”) in aluminum, and 10 mm (3/8”) in mild steel, these capabilities are not as efficient as those of
conventional electric power tools. In particular, when drilling through aluminum material with a 12-mm
(15/32”) drill bit, the drill tends to become locked when the drill bit penetrates the material. For this reason,
customers should be cautioned to reduce the thrust on the main drill body when drilling completely
through a material in order to prevent the tool from locking. Repeated locking of the drill causes
excessive current to flow from the battery, which not only decreases the amount of work possible per
charge, but could also result in motor overheating.
B. Suggestions and precautions on efficient use of the charger and storage battery
If the Type BCL 1015 storage battery is exposed to direct sunlight for an extended period or the tool has just
been operated for a long time, recharging may not be possible at a battery temperature above 50°C (122°F).
In such case, customers should be advised to place the battery in a shaded area with good airflow, and allow
sufficient cooling before recharging. This phenomenon is common to all existing batteries and chargers that
employ temperature-sensitive overcharge protection devices. The cooling time necessary before recharging
varies from a few minutes to about 40 minutes, depending on the load, duration of use, and ambient
temperature.
-10-
Be sure to remove the storage battery (BCL 1015) from the main body before servicing. Inadvertent
triggering of the switch with the storage battery connected will result in the danger of accidentally activating
the motor.

Gear Case [9] are almost at the same level.
(3) While aligning the matching mark on Gear Case [9] with the projecting part of Click Spring [5], fit Click
Spring [5] into the notches on Gear Case [9]. Be sure to orient Click Spring [5] correctly as shown in the
figure below.

(1) Apply appropriate amounts of grease (Hitachi Motor Grease No. 29) to the engaging surfaces of gears
and the Ring Gear [12] surface that contacts Steel Ball D5 [10].
(2) Fit Steel Ball D5 [10], Ring Gear [12], Carrier [13], Planet Gear (C) Set [18], and all other parts
sequentially into Gear Case [9] as shown in the figure below.
x Be careful to correctly orient Ring Gear [12], Carrier [13], Pinion (C) [15], Slide Ring Gear [20], Shift
Arm [11], and Pinion (B) [22] as shown in the figure below. Do not fail to fit Washer (C) [21].
x Make sure that two Needles [16] are inserted between Washer (B) [14] and First Ring Gear [24].

4. Coupling of the power supply unit with the drive unit
(1) Attach Motor Spacer [27] to Motor DC12V [28].
Fit the mounting screw of Motor DC12V [28] into the mounting hole of Motor Spacer [27], and then
secure the motor spacer with two Machine Screw M3 X 8 [26].
(2) Fit the convex feature of Motor Spacer [27] into the concave feature of Gear Case [9], and then turn
Motor Spacer [27] clockwise to secure it in place.
When attaching Motor DC12V [28] to Gear Box Ass’y [3], be careful to correctly orient Motor DC12V [28]
and Gear Case [9].
Once Motor DC12V [28] is mounted in the housing, the red marking on Motor DC12V [28] must face
upward.
5. Reassembly of the Clutch Dial
One of the three convex features of Nut [6]
is wider than the others; one of the three
concavity features inside Clutch Dial [4] is
wider than the others. While aligning the
wider convex feature with the wider concave
feature, fit Nut [6] into Clutch Dial [4]. Note
that the wider concave feature inside
Clutch Dial [4] is located at the indication
of clutch setting "1".

6. Reassembling of the housing
(1) Attach the LED to Housing (A). (B)Set [29]. When attaching the LED, be careful to prevent not to twist
the LED wire (delivered as an accessory for DC-Speed Control Switch [35]). Also be sure to run the LED
wire through the fixing rib on the housing. (See the figure below.)
(2) Motor DC12V [28] and Gear Box Ass’y [3] (already coupled) and Shift Knob [33] in Housing (A). (B)Set [29].
When mounting these parts, the convex features of Gear Case [9] and Motor Spacer [27] must be fitted
into the corresponding concave features of Housing (A). (B)Set [29]; the convex feature of Clutch Dial [4]
must be fitted into the corresponding concave feature of Housing (A). (B)Set [29]. Also, the two Needles [16]
projecting from Gear Case [9] must be fitted into the two holes on Housing (A). (B)Set [29]. Be careful to
prevent the LED wire from being caught between the housing and mounted parts. (See the figure below.)
