Working on Your Computer

Before Working Inside Your Computer

Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help to

ensure your personal safety. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure included in this document assumes

that the following conditions exist:

• You have read the safety information that shipped with your computer.

• A component can be replaced or--if purchased separately--installed by performing the removal

procedure in reverse order.

WARNING: Disconnect all power sources before opening the computer cover or panels. After you

finish working inside the computer, replace all covers, panels, and screws before connecting to

the power source.

WARNING: Before working inside your computer, read the safety information that shipped with

your computer. For additional safety best practices information, see the Regulatory Compliance

CAUTION: Many repairs may only be done by a certified service technician. You should only

perform troubleshooting and simple repairs as authorized in your product documentation, or as

directed by the online or telephone service and support team. Damage due to servicing that is

not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions

that came with the product.

CAUTION: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or

by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface, such as a connector on the back of the

computer.

CAUTION: Handle components and cards with care. Do not touch the components or contacts

on a card. Hold a card by its edges or by its metal mounting bracket. Hold a component such as a

processor by its edges, not by its pins.

CAUTION: When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its pull-tab, not on the cable

itself. Some cables have connectors with locking tabs; if you are disconnecting this type of cable,

press in on the locking tabs before you disconnect the cable. As you pull connectors apart, keep

them evenly aligned to avoid bending any connector pins. Also, before you connect a cable,

ensure that both connectors are correctly oriented and aligned.

NOTE: The color of your computer and certain components may appear differently than shown in

this document.

To avoid damaging your computer, perform the following steps before you begin working inside the

computer.

1. Ensure that your work surface is flat and clean to prevent the computer cover from being scratched.

2. Turn off your computer (see Turning off Your Computer).

3. If the computer is connected to a docking device (docked), undock it.

CAUTION: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer and

then unplug the cable from the network device.

4. Disconnect all network cables from the computer.

5. Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.

6. Close the display and turn the computer upside-down on a flat work surface.

NOTE: To avoid damaging the system board, you must remove the main battery before you

service the computer.

7. Remove the main battery.

8. Turn the computer top-side up.

9. Open the display.

10. Press the power button to ground the system board.

CAUTION: To guard against electrical shock, always unplug your computer from the

electrical outlet before opening the display.

CAUTION: Before touching anything inside your computer, ground yourself by touching an

unpainted metal surface, such as the metal at the back of the computer. While you work,

periodically touch an unpainted metal surface to dissipate static electricity, which could

harm internal components.

11. Remove any installed ExpressCards or Smart Cards from the appropriate slots.

Turning Off Your Computer

CAUTION: To avoid losing data, save and close all open files and exit all open programs before

you turn off your computer.

1. Shut down the operating system:

• In Windows 8.1:

– Using a touch-enabled device:

a. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, opening the Charms menu and select

Settings.

b. Select the and then select Shut down.

* On the Home screen, touch the and then select Shut down.

– Using a mouse:

a. Point to upper-right corner of the screen and click Settings.

b. Click the and select Shut down.

* On the Home screen, click and then select Shut down.

• In Windows 7:

1. Click Start .

2. Click Shut Down.

1. Click Start .

2. Click the arrow in the lower-right corner of the Start menu as shown below, and then click

Shut Down .

2. Ensure that the computer and all attached devices are turned off. If your computer and attached

devices did not automatically turn off when you shut down your operating system, press and hold

the power button for about 6 seconds to turn them off.

After Working Inside Your Computer

After you complete any replacement procedure, ensure you connect any external devices, cards, and

cables before turning on your computer.

CAUTION: To avoid damage to the computer, use only the battery designed for this particular

Dell computer. Do not use batteries designed for other Dell computers.

1. Connect any external devices, such as a port replicator or media base, and replace any cards, such as

an ExpressCard.

2. Connect any telephone or network cables to your computer.

CAUTION: To connect a network cable, first plug the cable into the network device and then

plug it into the computer.

3. Replace the battery.

4. Connect your computer and all attached devices to their electrical outlets.

5. Turn on your computer.

Removing and Installing Components

This section provides detailed information on how to remove or install the components from your

computer.

Recommended Tools

The procedures in this document may require the following tools:

• Small flat-blade screwdriver

• #0 Phillips screwdriver

• #1 Phillips screwdriver

• Small plastic scribe

Removing the Base Cover

1. Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer.

2. Perform the following steps as shown in the illustration:

a. Loosen the captive screws that secure the base cover to the computer [1].

b. Pry the base cover along the edges to loosen it [2].

3. Perform the following steps as shown in the illustration:

a. Lift the base cover partially at a 45–degree angle [1].

b. Remove the base cover from the computer [2].

Installing the Base Cover

1. Perform the following steps as shown in the illustration:

a. Align the base cover on the computer [1].

b. Lower the base cover towards the computer in the direction indicated [2].

2. Starting from the sides, press on the locations indicated by the arrows. This will snap the base cover

to the computer.

3. Tighten the screws that secure the base cover to the computer.

4. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your computer.

Removing the Battery

1. Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer..

2. Remove base cover

3. Perform the following steps as shown in the illustration:

a. Loosen the screw that secures the battery to the computer [1].

b. Lift the battery [2].

4. Lift the battery partially at a 45–degree angle.

5. Remove the battery from the computer.

Installing the Battery

1. Place the battery in its slots.

2. Press the location indicated in the picture to ensure proper connection after installation.

3. Tighten the screw to secure the battery to the computer.

4. Install the base cover.

5. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your computer.

Removing the Hard Drive

1. Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer..

2. Remove:

a. base cover

b. battery

3. Perform the following steps as shown in the illustration:

a. Loosen the screw that secures the hard drive to the computer [1].

b. Lift the hard drive partially at a 45–degree angle [2].

c. Slide the hard drive from the computer [3].

4. Perform the following steps as shown in the illustration:

a. Disconnect the hard drive cable and slide the hard drive [1].

b. Lift the hard drive from the computer [2].

Installing the Hard Drive

1. Connect the hard drive cable.

2. Place the hard drive inside the computer.

3. Tighten the screw that secures the hard drive to the computer.

4. Install:

a. battery

b. base cover

5. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your computer.

Removing the WLAN Card

1. Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer.

2. Remove:

a. base cover

b. battery

3. Perform the following steps as shown in the illustration:

a. Loosen the screw that secures the WLAN card to the computer [1].

b. Lift the tab in the direction indicated [2].

c. Disconnect the cables that connect the WLAN card to the computer [3].

4. Remove the WLAN card from the computer.

Installing the WLAN Card

1. Place the WLAN card in its slot on the computer.

2. Connect the WLAN antenna cables to their connectors on the WLAN Card.

3. Press the locking tab.

4. Tighten the screw that secures the WLAN card to the computer.

5. Install:

a. battery

b. base cover

6. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your computer.

Removing the System Fan

1. Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer.

2. Remove:

a. base cover

b. battery

3. Perform the following steps as shown in the illustration:

a. Lift the locking tab [1].

b. Disconnect the tape that secures the system fan [2].

c. Lift the tape that secures the system fan [3].

4. Perform the following steps as shown in the illustration:

a. Disconnect the fan cable from the computer [1].

b. Unroute the cable from the slot [2].

5. Perform the following steps as shown in the illustration:

a. Loosen the screw that secures the system fan to the computer [1].

b. Lift the system fan from the computer [2].

Installing the System Fan

1. Place the system fan on its slots in the computer.

2. Tighten the screw to secure the system fan to the computer.

3. Route the cable to the slot.

4. Connect the fan cable to the computer.

5. Affix the adhesive tape.

6. Press the locking tab.

7. Install

a. battery

b. base cover

8. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your computer.

Removing the Keyboard

1. Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer.

2. Remove:

a. base cover

b. battery

3. Release the keyboard by prying the tabs on the palmrest assembly.

4. Perform the following steps as shown in the illustration:

a. Lift the keyboard from the computer [1].

b. Flip the keyboard to access the keyboard cable [2].

5. Perform the following steps as shown in the illustration:

a. Lift the locking tab [1].

b. Disconnect the cable from the locking tab [2].

c. Disconnect the keyboard cable from the computer [3].

Installing the Keyboard

Procedure

NOTE: If you are installing a new keyboard, fold the cables the same way they are folded on the old

keyboard.

1. Slide the keyboard and keyboard-backlight cables into the respective connectors and press down

the latches to secure the cables.

2. Turn the keyboard over, slide the tabs on the keyboard into the slots on the palm-rest assembly, and

snap the keyboard into place.

CAUTION: Do not apply excess pressure while folding the cables.

The cables on the keyboard are not folded when you receive a replacement keyboard. Follow these

instructions to fold the cables on the replacement keyboard the same way they are folded on the old

keyboard.

1. Place the keyboard on a flat and clean surface.

• 1) keyboard

• 2) keyboard-backlight cable

• 3) keyboard cable

CAUTION: Do not apply excess pressure while folding the cables.

2. Lift the keyboard cable.

3. Gently fold the keyboard-backlight cable at the fold line
