ONE-YEAR WARRANTY ON CRAFTSMAN LOG SPLITTER

For one year from the date of purchase, when this Craftsman log splitter is maintained, lubricated, and tuned up

according to the operating and maintenance instructions in the operator's manual, Sears will repair, free of

charge, any defect in material or workmanship.

This warranty excludes the tires, spark plug, oil filter and air cleaner, which are expendable parts and become

worn during normal use.

If this log splitter is used for commercial or rental purposes, this warranty applies for only 30 days from the date

of purchase.

WARRANTY SERVICE IS AVAILABLE BY CONTACTING THE NEAREST SEARS SERVICE CENTER IN THE

Towing

• This unitshould notbe towed on any street,

highway or publicroad withoutchecking the

existing federal, localor state requirements.

Such information may be obtained bycallingyour

state or local bureau of motorvehicles. Any

licensingor modificationsneeded tocomplywith

federal, localor state vehiclerequirements isthe

sole responsibilityofthe purchaser.

• Make sure you follow the wiring diagram color

codes when installing the light kit on the log

splitter. (e.g. ground to ground, left turn to left

turn, etc.). Failure to wire unit correctly may

cause the tow vehicle wiring to overheat and/or

the log splitterlights to operate incorrectly. It may

be necessary to replace the turn signal flasher

unitin your tow vehicle if it is notcapable of

operatingthe additionallightson the log splitter.

• Before towing the log splitter on a street, highway

or public road, verify that all lights are functioning

properly and the yellow side reflectors are in

position. Replace bulbs if they are burnt out.

• Before towing, always check to be certain the log

splitter iscorrectly and securely attached to the

tow vehicle, and safety chains are in place.

Leave slack in chains for turning allowance.

• Use a class Ior higher hitch with a 1-7/8" ball.

Keep ball socketand clamp face lubricated with

chassis grease.

• Be sure the coupleris secured to the hitch ball

and the lock lever isdown tight and locked.

• Check vehicle hitch, ball and coupler for signs of

wear or damage. Replace any parts that are worn

or damaged before towing.

• The coupler must be secured to the log splitter

tongue tube with the original equipment bolts and

nuts. See your authorized service dealer for

replacement parts. Coupler nuts should be

tightened securely (20 foot pounds).

• Make sure beam assembly is securely latched in

the horizontal position andjack stand (if provided)

ispivotedand secured inthe up positionbefore

towing log splitter,Never tow withthe beam in

vertical position.

• Do not tow the log splitterfasterthan 45 MPH.

Higher speeds may damage logsplitter.

Excessive highspeeds may cause the logsplitter

to=fishtail" or otherwise become unstable.

• Check the tire pressure on the logsplittertires. It

must be 30 p.s.i. MAXIMUM for highway travel.

• When parking, storingor usingyour logsplitter,

keep thecoupler offthe groundso dirtwillnot

build up inthe ball socket.

• Do not allow anyone to sit or ride on your log

splitter. They can easily fall off and be seriously

injured.

Training

• Beforeoperating this logsplitter,read and

understand thisoperator's manual completely.

Become familiar with itfor yourownsafety. To fail

to do somay cause serious injury. Do notallow

anyone to operate yourlog splitterwho has not

read this manual. Keep this manual in a safe

place for future and regular reference and for

ordering replacement parts.

• Never use your splitter for any other purpose than

splitting wood. It is designed for this use and any

other use may cause an injury.Your logsplitteris

a precisionpiece of powerequipment, not a toy.

Therefore, exercise extreme caution at all times.

• Never arrow childrento operate yourlogsplitter.

Do not allowadultsto operate itwithoutproper

instruction.Only personswell acquainted with

these rulesofsafe operationshouldbe allowedto

use your logsplitter.

• Only the operatoristo be near your logsplitter

during use. Keep all others, includingpetsand

children,a minimumof20 feet away from your

workzone. Flyingwoodcan be hazardous. If a

helper isassisting in loadinglogs, never activate

the controluntilthe helper isclear ofthe area,

More accidents occurwhen more than one

person operates thelogsplitterthan at any other

time.

No one shouldoperate thisunitwhileintoxicated

or whiletaking medicationthat impairsthe

senses or reactions.A clear mindisessentialfor

safety. Never allow a person who istiredor

otherwise notalert to use yourlogsplitter.

Preparation

• Never wear loose clothingorjewelry thatcan be

caught by movingparts ofyour logsplitterand

pullyou intoit. Keep clothingaway from all

moving partsof yourlogsplitter.

• Wear properhead gear tokeep hairaway from

moving parts.Always wear protectivehearing

devices as needed.

• Always wear safety shoes. A dropped logcan

seriouslyinjureyourfoot.

• Always wear safety glasses or goggleswhile

operatingyoursplitter.A piece of splittinglog

couldfly offand hityoureyes.

• Wear leather work gloves. Be sure theyare tight

fitting without loosecuffsor draw strings.

• Use your logsplitterin daylight, or undergood

artificial light.

• Never operate your splitter on slippery, wet,

muddy or icy surfaces. Safe footing is essential

in preventing accidents,

• Never operate your splitterwhile attached to a

towingvehicle.

• Only operate your splitter on level ground and

not on the sideof a hill. Itcould tip, or rolling logs

or poor footing could cause an accident.

Operating the splitteron level ground also

prevents the spillage of gasoline from the fuel

tank.

• Never attempt to move the log splitter over hilly

or uneven terrain without a tow vehicle or

adequate help.

• Always block the wheels to prevent movement

of log splitter while in operation.

• Check the fuel before starting the engine.

Gasoline is an extremely flammable fuel. Do not

fill the gasoline tank indoors, when the engine is

running, or while the engine is still hot. Replace

gasoline cap securely and wipe off any spilled

gasoline before startingthe engine as it may

cause a fire or explosion.

• Both ends of each log must be cut as square as

possible to help prevent the log from riding out of

the splitter during operation.

Operation

• Vertical Operating Position: Stand infrontof

the logsplitter.

Horizontal Operating Position: Stand behind

the reservoirtank. See illustrations.

Know how to stop the unit and disengage the

controls.

Never place hands or feet between log and

splittingwedge or between log and end plate

during forward or reverse stroke. To do so may

result in crushed or amputated fingers or toes, or

worse, you may lose an arm or foot.

Do not straddle the splitter when using it. A slip

in any position could result in a serious injury.

Do not step over your log splitter when the

engine is running. You may trip or accidentally

activatethe splittingwedge if you step over.If

you need to get to the other side,walk around.

Never try to split two logs on top of each other.

One may fly out and injure you.

When loading the logsplitter, place your hands

on the side of the log, not at the ends. Never

attemptto load your splitter while the splitting

wedge is in motion. You may get caught by the

wedge and injured,

Only use your hand to operate the splitting

wedge or control lever, Never use your foot or a

rope or any other extensiondevice. This could

result in your inability to stopyour splitterquickly

enough to avoid injury.

Always keep fingers away from any cracks that

open in the log during splitting operation. They

can quickly close and pinch or amputate your

fingers.

• Never attemptto splitwoodsacross the grain.

Some types ofwood may burstor flyout ofyour

splitterand resultin injuryto you or a bystander.

• For logsthat are notcut square, the longest

portionofthe logshouldbe rotated downand

the most square end placed againstthe splitting

wedge.

• Keep your work area clean. Immediately

remove splitwoodaround yoursplittersothat

you do notstumble over it. Clean chipsand dirt

offend plate (wood platform)after each logis

split, orwhenever necessary to maintain flat

contact between wood and end plate (platform).

• Never move the togsplitterwhilethe engine is

running.

• Never leave yourlogsplitterunattendedwiththe

engine running.Shut offthe engine ifyou are

leaving your splitter,even for a shortperiodof

time. Someone couldaccidentallyactivate the

splittingwedge and be injured.

• Do not runengine in an enclosed area. Exhaust

gases contain carbon monoxide.This odorless

gas can be deadly when inhaled.

• Be careful not totouch the mufflerafter the

engine has been running. Itwillbe HOT!

• Ifthe equipment shouldstarttovibrate

abnormally, stopthe engine and check

immediately for thecause. Vibration isgenerally

a warning of trouble.

• When cleaning, repairingor inspecting,make

certain all moving parts have stopped.

Disconnectthe spark plugwire and keep the

wire away from the plugto prevent accidental

starting.

Customer Responsibilities

• Do not operate yoursplitter inpoor mechanical

conditionor when in need ofrepair,

• Periodicallycheck that all nuts,bolts, screws,

hose clamps and hydraulicfittingsare tightto be

sure equipment is insafe workingcondition.

Where appropriate, check all safety guards and

shieldstobe sure theyare intheproper position.

Never operate yoursplitterwithsafety guards,

shields orother protectivefeatures removed.

These safety devices are for yourprotection.

• Replace all damaged or worn partssuch as

hydraulichoses and fittingsimmediately with

manufacturer approved replacement parts.

• Do not change the engine governor settingsor

overspeed the engine. This increases the

hazard of personal injury. The maximum engine

speed is preset by the manufacturer and is

within safety limits.

• Do not alter your log splitter in any manner such

as attaching a rope or extension to the control

lever or adding to the width or height of the

wedge. Such alterations may cause yoursplitter

to be unsafe.

• Perform all recommended maintenance

proceduresbefore you useyour splitter.

• Do notservice or repair yourlogsplitterwithout

disconnectingthe spark plugwire and movingit

away from the spark plug.

• Never storethe equipmentwithgasoline inthe

tank inside ofa buildingwhere ignitionsources

are present, such as hot water and space

heaters, clothesdryersand the like.Allow the

engineto coolbefore storinginany enclosure.

• Always storegasoline in an approved, tightly

sealed container. Store the containerin a cool,

dryplace. Do not store in a building where

ignitionsourcesare present.

• To reducefire hazard, keepengine free ofgrass,

leaves, wood chips, and excessive grease and

oil.

• The hydraulicsystem ofyourlogsplitterrequires

carefulinspection,along with the mechanical

parts. Besure to replacefrayed, kinked,or

otherwisedamaged hydrauliccomponents.

• Fluidescaping from a very small holecan be

almostinvisible.Do notcheck for leakswithyour

hand. Escapingfluid under pressure can have

sufficientforce topenetrate skin, causing

seriouspersonal injury.Leakscan be locatedby

passinga piece of cardboardor woodover the

suspectedleak and lookingfor discoloration.

• Shoulditbecome necessary to loosenor

remove any hydraulicfitting or line, be sure to

relieveall pressure by shuttingofftheengine

and movingthe controlhandle back and forth

several times.

• Do not removethe capfrom thehydraulictankor

reservoirwhileyourlogsplitterisrunning.Hot oil

under pressure could cause injury.

• The pressure reliefvalve on yoursplitteris

preset at the factory. Do notadjustthe valve.

Onlya qualified servicetechnicianshould

performthisadjustment.

• Completelydrain fuel tank priorto storage. This

guardsagainst accumulationoffuel fumes

which couldresultin a fire hazard.

• Never store log splitteroutsidewithouta

waterproofcover. Rainwillcause ruston the

insideofthe cylinder.

Important Information

Always:

• Use clean fluid and check fluid level regularly.

• Use Dexron III Automatic Transmission Fluid or

10W non-foaming hydraulic fluid.

• Use a filter (clean or replace regularly).

• Use a breather cap on fluid reservoir.

• Make certain pumpis mounted and aligned

properly.

• Use a flexible "spider" type couplingbetween

engine and pumpdrive shafts.

• Keep hoses clear and unblocked.

• Bleed air out ofhoses before operating.

• Flushand clean hydraulicsystem beforestart-

up after any malfunctionor servicing.

• Use "pipe dope" on all hydraulicfittings.

• Allow time for warm-up before splittingwood,

• Prime the pump before initialstart-up byturning

over the engine with spark plug disconnected.

• Split woodwith thegrain (lengthwise)only.

Never:

• Use when fluid is below 20° F, orabove 150° F,

• Use a solidengine/pump coupling.

• Force pumpwhen mounting.

• Operate through reliefvalve.

• Attempt to adjust unloadingor reliefvalve.

• Operate with air in hydraulic system.

• Use Teflon tape on hydraulicfittings.

WARNING: Exercise extreme caution as

parts are very heavy. Mechanical handling

equipment or sufficientmanpower should

• Prythe top, sides and ends offcrate using a

crowbar or large screwdriver.

• Set panels aside to avoid tire punctures or

personal injury.

• Remove and discard plastic bag that covers

unit.

Note: Do not remove the banding fromaround the

tankuntil thelog splitterisassembled.

Disconnecting Spark Plug

• Before you proceed withthe assembly

procedure, disconnectthe spark plugwire from

the spark plug on the logsplitterengine and

move the wire away from the spark plug.This

willprevent accidental starting.See Figure 1.

Setting Up Log Splitter

NOTE: All hardware needed for assemblingyour

Craftsman logsplitterhas been placed in positionon

the equipment.

• Remove the two bolts, lock washers and hex

nutsthat secure the tongue assembly to the

beam assembly. See Figure2.

• Unlockthe two beam locksby pullingouton the

beam locksand pivotingthem down. Remove

thetongue assembly.

Place the end ofthe tongue assembly in

between the bracketson thewheel and reservoir

tankassembly. Secure with hardware removed

eadier. See Figure3.

Remove the springclipand the clevispinfrom

the jack stand. Pivot thejack stand tothe

operatingposition (90°), and secure with the

springclipand clevispin. See Figure4.

• Cut the twostraps fromaround the reservoir

• Remove lag screw and washer whichsecures

the beam assembly tothe bottomof thecrate.

• Lower the beam assembly toitshorizontal

position. Make certain the beam islocked

securely with the horizontal beam lock. See

Figure 5.

Final Assembly

Tire Pressure

The tiresmay have been over-inflated for shipping

purposes. Maximum tirepressure shouldnot exceed

30 p.s.i. Check tirepressure regularly.

Preparing the Engine

• Place the logsplitteron a firm, level surface.

• Check engine oilas instructedon page 11.

• Fill engine withgasoline as instructedon

page 11.

Preparing the Log Splitter

• Lubricate the beam area where the splitting

wedge will slide withengine oil (do not use

grease). Make certain to oil both front and back

of the beam face.

• Remove reservoir vent plug. See Figure 6.

• Fill the reservoir tank to about 2" from the top

with4 gallons of Dexron III automatic

transmission fluid, or lOW non-foaming

hydraulic fluid. Replace vent plug securely

• Disconnect the spark plug wire. Prime the pump

by pulling the recoil starter as far as it will go.

Repeat approximately 10 times.

• Reconnect the sparkplug wire and start engine.

Refer to starting instructions on page 12.

• Use control handle to engage the wedge to the

far extended position. Refer to Figure 8.

• Retract the wedge.

• Refilltanktowithin 1-1/2"to2"fromthetopof

the tank.

• Extendandretractthewedge 12complete

cycles to remove trapped air in the system

(system is "self-bleeding").

• Refillthereservoirtowithin 1-1/2"to2"fromthe

top of the tank. Much of the original fluid has

been drawn into the cylinder and hoses. Make

certain to refill the reservoir, to prevent extreme

damage to the hydraulic pump.

NOTE: Some fluid may overflow from the vent plug as

the system builds heat and the fluid expands and

seeks a balanced level.

Move control handle BACK or UP to return the

wedge. See Figure 8 on page 11.

various controls and adjustments. Save this manual for future reference.

The operation of any log splitter can result in foreign objects being thrown into the eyes,

which can result in severe eye damage. Always wear safety glasses, when operating your

log splitter,or while performing any adjustments or repairs on it.

MEETS ANSI SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

Sears log splittersconform to the safety standards B71.7-1985 of the American National Standards Institute.

Operating Controls

(See Figure 7.)

WARNING: Before usingyourlogsplitter,

again refer tothesafety rules starting on

page 3 of thismanual. Always be careful.

Do not operate the logsplitter withoutthe

proper amount ofhydraulic oil in the

reservoir tank. Failure torefill thetank will

void your warranty.

Beam Locks

Used tosecure thebeam in the horizontalor the

vertical position. There are two beam locks,one for

each operatingposition. The vertical beam lock is

locatednext to the oilfilter. The horizontal beam lock

islocated on the beam supportlatch bracket.

• Move controlhandle FORWARD or DOWN to

move wedge down to splitwood.

NOTE: Control handle will return to neutral position

as soonas handle is released.

• Release the control handle to stop the wedge

movement.

• Move control handle BACK or UP to return the

wedge.

Stopping Engine

• Move throttle control lever toSTOP position.

• Disconnect spark plug wire and move away

from spark plug to prevent accidental starting

while equipment is unattended.

Before Starting

Oil Fill-Up

Only use highquality detergent oil rated with API

service classification SF, SG or SH. Select the

oil's viscosity grade according to the expected

operating temperature. Follow the chart below.

NOTE: Although multi-viscosity oils (5W30, l OW3O,

etc.) improve starting in coldweather, these

multiviscosityoils willresultin increased oil

consumption when used above 40°F Check theoil

damage from runninglow onoil.

WARNING: SAE 30 oil, if used below 40°F,

willresult in hard startingand possible

engine bore damage due toinadequate

lubrication.

Fill engine with theappropriateoilas follows:

• Remove oil fill dipstick.

• Withlogsplitteron level ground, usea funnel to

fillengine oilto FULL mark on dipstick.Capacity

isapproximately 1,25 pintsor21 ounces. Be

careful not to overfill.

• Replace dipstickon to theengine and tighten.

Then remove the dipstickagain and wipe offthe

oil from the end of thedipstickwitha clean cloth.

• Screw thedipstickfirmlyback toplace. Remove

tocheck theoillevel.

• Refill oiltoFULL mark on dipstickff necessary.

Replace dipstickand tighten.

WARNING: To avoid engine damage, never

run engine unless oillevel is between FULL

and Add marks on thedipstick.

Gasoline FIll-Up

• Remove fuel cap.

• Make certain the gasoline containeris clean and

free from rust or foreign particles. Never use

gasoline that may be stale from long periods of

storage in the container.

• Fill fuel tank with about 1.25quarts of clean,

fresh, lead-free grade automotive gasoline.

NOTE: DO NOT use gasoline containing methanol

Gasoline containing up to about 10% ethanol or up to

15% methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) may be used,

but will require special care when engine is left

unused for extended period. See storage instructions

onpagel_

• Replace fuel cap.

WARNING: Do notfill closerthan 1/2 inchof

top offuel tank toprevent spillsand to allow

for fuel expansion. Ifgasolineis accidently

spilled, move logsplitteraway from area of

spill.Avoid creating any sourceof ignition

untilgasoline vapors have disappeared,

Starting Engine

1. Attach spark plug wire and rubberboottothe

spark plug.See Figure 9,

2. Place the throttle controllever in START

position.See Figure 9.

3. Push the primerthree times, wait abouttwo

seconds between each push. In coldweather

with temperatures below 550 F, pushthe primer

five times, See Figure9.

° Use controlhandle to runwedge up and down

beam 6 to 8 timesto circulatethe hydraulicfluid,

whichwillwarm and thinthe fluid.

• Place logsplitteron a firm, level surface.

• To raise the beam for vertical operation: Pull

out the verticalbeam lockon the tongue.

• Pivot beam lockdown to release the beam.

• Move the beam tothe verticalposition.Secure it

withthe beam lockon the reservoirtank

assembly. See Figure 10.

Grasp the starterhandle and pullrope outslowly

untilengine reaches start ofthe compression

cycle(rope willpullslightlyharder at this point).

Letthe rope rewindslowly. Pull ropewith a

rapid, continuous,full arm stroke. Keep a firm

grip on thestarter handle. Let rope rewind

slowly. Do not let starter handle snap back

against starter.

NOTE: If engine does not fire after three attempts,

repeat above instructions.

• To lower the beam: Pull out the horizontal

Before Each Use

• Remove the vent plug and check hydraulicfluid

level. Refill ifnecessary.

• Check engine oil level, Refill if necessary.

• Fill up gasoline if necessary.

• Lubricate with engine oil the beam area where

splitting wedge will slide. Do not use grease to

lubricate. Make sure to lubricate both the front

and the back of the beam face.

• Attach spark plug wire to the spark plug.

Operating the Log Splitter

WARNING: Wear leather work gloves,

safety shoes and safety glasses tooperate

the logsplitter.Watch yourfooting during

operation and while handling the log.

• Place the log splitter on a dry, firm,level surface.

• Blockthefront and back ofthe wheels when

operating (and when storing)to preventitfrom

moving or rollingaway.

• Lock in eitherthe horizontalorvertical position.

• Set the engine throttle at maximum speed.

• Place the logagainstthe end plate. Only split

wood inthe directionof thegrain,

• Stabilize the logwhen needed bytouchingthe

sides ofthe logwithyourfree hand. Never place

your handsbetween the logand the splitting

wedge.

• Only one adult should stabilize the log and

operate the control handle sothat theoperator

has full controlover the logand the wedge.

WARNING: Ifthe hydraulic fluid becomes

very hot at any time duringthe operation,

stop the unitand allow the fluid to cool

down. Otherwise theperformance ofyour

logsplitterwillbe affected.

Transporting the Log Splitter

• Lowerthe beam to itshorizontalposition.Make

certainthe beam is lockedsecurelywith the

horizontalbeam lock.

• Raise or lowerjack stand toattachthe hitchtoa

towing vehicle. Make certainto latch securely.

• Remove springpinand clevispinsecuringthe

jack stand tothe tongue assembly and pivotthe

jackstand to transportposition,Secure with

hardware just removed,

Attach the safety chainsto thetowing vehicle.

General Recommendations

• Always observe safety ruleswhen performing

any maintenance.

• The warranty on this logsplitterdoes not cover

items that have been subjectedto operator

abuse or negligence. To receive full value from

the warranty, operator must maintainthe log

splitteras instructedinthis manual.

• Some adjustmentswillneed tobe made

periodicallytomaintain your unitproperly.

• Alladjustments inthe Service and Adjustments

sectionofthis manualshouldbe checked at least

once each season.

• Followthe maintenance schedule givenabove.

• Periodicallycheck all fasteners and make sure

these are tight.

,_ WARNING: Always stopthe engine and

disconnect spark plug wire before

performingany maintenance oradjustments.

Splitter Mechanism

Hydraulic Fluid

Check the hydraulic fluid level in the logsplitter

reservoir tank before each use. Fluid level should

be 1.5" to 2" from the top of the tank (four gallons

approximately).

• Change the hydraulic fluid in the reservoir every

100 hours of operation.

• Disconnect the suctionhose from the bottom of

the reservoir tank, and drainthe fluid into a

suitable container.

• Refill using only Dexron III automatic

transmission fluid or 10W non-foaming hydraulic

fluid. Also change the hydraulic filter.

NOTE: Drain the fluid and flushthe reservoirtank and

hoses with kerosene whenever any repair work is

performed on the tank, hydraulicpump or valve.

Contaminants in the fluidwill damage thehydraulic

components (shouldbe performed byyour Sears

service center).

Hydraulic Filter

• Change the hydraulic filter every 50 hours of

operation. Use onlya 10 micronhydraulic filter.

Hose Clamps

Check the hose clamps on the suction hose

(attached to the side ofthe pump) for proper

tightness before each use.

Check the hose clamps on the return hose at

leastonce a season.

Beam And Splitting Wedge

Lubricate bothsides of the beam where it

contacts thesplittingwedge withengine oil

before each use to obtainyears of service.

However, normal wear willoccur.

Periodicallycheck the boltson the side ofthe

wedge plate toeliminate excess space between

the wedge plate and thebeam.

The wedge plate on thelog splitterisdesigned

so thegib blockson theside of thewedge plate

can be easily removed and rotated or turned

over foreven wear. Youcan locate these twogib

blocksbehind thegibplate shownin thefigure

below. Make certain to readjust theadjustment

boltsso wedge moves freely,but no excess

space existsbetween the wedge plate and

beam. See Figure 12.

Engine

Changing engine oil

Only usehigh quality detergent oil rated with

API service classification SF, SG or SH. Select

the oil's viscosity grade according to the

expected operating temperature. Refer to

page 11 of this manual for viscosity chart.

• Stop engine and waft several minutes before

checkingoilleveL Disconnectsparkplugwire.

• With engine on level ground, the oil must be to

FULL mark on dipstick.

• Change engine oil after the first two hours of

operation, and every 25 hours thereafter.

Change oil more frequently if the engine is

operated under heavy load, or in high

surroundingtemperatures.

• Drain oil while engine is warm. Follow the

instructions given below.

• Remove oil drain plug and dipstick. Catch oilin a

suitable container.

• Whenengineisdrainedofalloil, replacedrain

plug securely,

• Refill withfresh oil. Refer to page 11 ofthis

manual for fill-upinstructions.

• Replace dipstick.

Service air cleaner

The air cleaner prevents damaging dirt, dust, etc.,

from entering the carburetorand being forced into the

engine and is important to engine life and

performance.

WARNING: Never run logsplitter engine

withoutair cleaner completely assembled.

• Service foamfilter after every25 hours of use, or

at least once a season. Service air cleaner more

often under dustyconditions.

• Remove air filtercover bypressingin on side of

tab and liftingcover upward. See Figure 13.

• Remove foamelement and inspectfilterfor

discolorationor dirtaccumulation.See Figure 13.

• Wash the foam filterin waterand detergent

solutionand squeeze (don't twist) untilall dirtis

removed.

• Rinse thoroughlyin clear water.

• Wrap ina clean cloth and squeeze (don'ttwist)

untilcompletely dry,

• Saturate in engine oiland squeeze todistribute

oiland remove excess oil.

• Clean insideof retainer and cover on the engine.

• Reinstall foam element. See Figure 13.

• Reinstall cover securelyon the retainer.

NOTE: Do not usepetroleum solvents (e.g.

kerosene) or pressurizedair toclean cartridge. These

willcause cartridgetodeteriorate.

WARNING: Temperature ofmufflerand

nearby areas may exceed 150° F(65oC).

Clean engine

• Clean engine periodically.Remove dirtand

debriswith a clothor brush. Cleaning with a

forcefulspray of water isnot recommended as

water could contaminate thefuel system.

• Frequently remove dirtand debris from cooling

fins, and air intake screen. See Figure14.

• To ensuresmoothoperation ofthe engine, keep

the governor linkage,springsand controlsfree

ofdebris.This willhelp ensureadequate cooling

and correctengine speed. See Figure 14.

Spark Plug

Clean spark plugand reset the gap to .030 inchesat

leastonce a season or every 100 hoursof operation.

See Figure 15. Refer to engine parts listfor correct

spark plugtype.

• Clean area around spark plug.Remove and

inspectspark plug.

Replace ifelectrodes are pitted,burned orthe

porcelainiscracked.

• Check electrode gap withwirefeeler guageand

reset gap to ,030 inches. See Figure 15.

NOTE: Do notsandblast spark plug. Spark plug

should be cleaned by scraping or wire brushingand

washing with a commercialsolvent.

WARNING: Always stop engine,

disconnect spark plug wire, and move it

away fromsparkplug beforeperformingany

adjustments or repairs.

Tires

See sidewall of tire for recommended pressure.

Maximum tire pressure under any circumstance

is 30 p.s.L Equal tire pressure should be

maintained on all tires.

WARNING: Excessive pressure (over 30

p.s.L) when seating beads may cause tire/

rimassembly toburstwithforce sufficientto

cause seriousinjury,

Flexible Pump Coupler

The flexiblepump coupleris a nylon "spider" insert,

located between thepump and engine shaft. Overa

period of time, the coupler willharden and

deteriorate. Replace thecoupler ffyou detect

vibrationor noise in thearea between theengine and

thepump. If the coupler fails completely, you will

experience a loss ofpower.

WARNING: Never hit the engine shaftin

any manner, as a blow willcause permanent

damage to theengine.

IMPORTANT: If you do not have the right toolsorate

otherwise uncomfortablewiththeprocedure, contact

Sears service center.

When replacing the flexible pump coupler, proceed

as follows. Follow the instructions carefully as the

alignment is critical.

• Disconnect the spark plug wire, and secure it

away from the spark plug.

• Drain gasoline from fuel tank or place a piece of

plastic film underneath the gas cap to prevent

gasoline from leaking.

• Using a 1/2 inch socket with an extension,

remove the three bolts securing the engine to

the engine mounting bracket. The three bolts

can be found under the engine mounting

bracket.

• Carefully lift engine oft mounting bracket and set

aside on a sturdy,level surface.

• Remove the nylon spider insert from the pump

sha ft. You may need a pair of needle nose

pliers tograsp the insert.

• Place a new "spider"insert into the pump coupling

halt See Figure 16,1. Make sure the key is on the

pump shaft. The key way in the lower coupling

haft has to fit over the key on thepump shaft.

• Re-seat the engine making sure to align the

pump and engine coupling halves. There must

be space between end of the engine and the

coupling half. See Figure 16,2.

NOTE: The pump coupling haft can be rotatedby

hand toaid in alignmenL ff the two parts are not

Set .035-.060 inch clearance between the

coupling halves by slidinga matchbox cover

between thejaws of the upper and the lower

coupling halves.

NOTE: Before securingtheset screw, applysome

Loctite TM on the threadsof thescrew.

• Tighten theset screwto 78 inch-poundstorque.

• Secure engine with three bolts removed earlier.

Torquebolts to 200 to450 inch-pounds.

• Reattach spark plug wiretospark plug. Besure

to remove plasticfilm fromunder gas cap ff

necessary.

Beam & Splitting Wedge

The wedge plate issubject tonormal wear.

Periodicallyadjusttheboltson thewedge plate

makingsure thatthe wedge moves freely,Also make

sure thatno excess space existsbetween the wedge

plate and the beam.

To adjust:

• Loosen three hex boltsontop ofthe wedge plate

(beneath thesplittingwedge). See Figure 17.

• Loosen the lock nutson the twoadjustment

boltson the side ofthe gib plate, located

beneath the splittingwedge. See Figure 17.

Turn the adjustment boltsinuntilsnug,then

back them offslowly untilthewedge assembly

will slideon the beam.

• Tighten the locknuts securelyagainst the gib

plate to holdadjustment boltsin thisposition.

• Retighten thethree hexboltson top of the

wedge plate.

To replace:

Periodicallyremove and replace the "gibs" (spacers)

between the wedge plate and the backplate as

follows.

NOTE: If desired, thegibs may be rotated and/or

tumed over foreven wear.

• Remove the center bolton top ofthe wedge

plate. Slidethe gib plate out. See Figure 17.

Remove and replace thegibs. Reassemble the

gibplate, makingcertain flat washer isin place

under thegib plate.

Readjust the bolts on the side ofthe wedge plate as

instructedpreviously.

Adjusting Carburetor

WARNING: If you make anyadjustmentsto

the engine whileit isrunning, keep clear of all

moving parts toavoidinjury. Becarefulof

heated surfaces and muffler.

Ifthe engine carburetor needs adjustment, contact

your nearest Sears service center.

Engine performance may be affected inaltitudes

above 4,000 feet. To improve engine performance,

install a high altitude adjustment kit. This kit is

available at Sears service centers.

Engine Speed

The engine speed onyour log splitterhas been set by

the engine manufacturer. Do not attempt to increase

engine speed or it may result in personal injury. If you

believe the engine is running too fast or too slow,

contact Sears service center for repair and

adjustment.

IMPORTANT: Changing of engine governed

speed by the customer willvoidengine

warranty.

Prepare your log splitter for storage at the end ofthe

season or if the log splitter will not be used for 30 days

or more.

WARNING: Never store machine with fuel

in the fuel tankinside ofbuilding where

fumes may reach an open flame or spark,or

where ignitionsourcesare present such as

hot water and space heaters, furnaces,

clothesdryers, stoves, electric motors,etc.

NOTE: Yearly check-up byyour localSears service

center is a good way toensureyour logsplitter will

providemaximum performance next season.

LOG SPLITTER

Clean the log splitterthoroughly.

Wipe unit withan oiled rag to prevent rust,

especially on the wedge and the beam.

ENGINE

IMPORTANT: It isimportant toprevent gum deposits

fromformingin essential fuel systemparts suchas

carburetor, fuel filter, fuelhose, or tankduring

storage. Also, experience indicates thatalcohol

blended fuels (calledgasohol or usingethanol or

methanol) can attract moisture whichleads to

separation and formationofacids during storage.

Acidic gas can damage thefuel system of an engine

whilein storage.

• Drain thefuel tank.Always drain fuel into

approved containeroutdoors,away from open

flame. Be sure the engine iscooLDo notsmoke

whilehandling the fuel.

• Starttheengineandletitrununtilthefuellines

and carburetor are empty.

• Never useengine or carburetorcleanerproducts

in the fuel tankor permanent damage may

occur. Use fresh fuel next season.

• Remove spark plug,pour approximately 1/2

ounce(approximately one tablespoon)ofengine

oilintocylinderand crank slowlytodistributeoil.

• Replace sparkplug.

NOTE: Fuel stabilizer isan acceptable alternative in

minimizingthe formationoffuel gum deposits during

storage.

Please follow the instructionsbelow for storingyour

log splitterwith fuel and stabilizer in the engine.

• Add stabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or storage

container.

• Always follow the mix ratio found on stabilizer

container.

• Run engine at least 10 minutes after adding

stabilizer to allow the stabilizer to reach the

carburetor.

• Donotdrainthegastankandcarburetorifusing

fuel stabilizer. Drain all the oil from the

crankcase (this should be done after the engine

has been operated and is still warm) and refill

the crankcase with fresh oil.

OTHER

Do not storegasoline fromone season to

another.

Replace yourgasoline can flit starts torust.

Rust and/or dirtin the gasoline willcause

problems. Store unitin a clean, dryarea. Do not

store next tocorrosive materials, such as

fertilizer.

NOTE: Ifstoringin an unventilated or metalstorage

shed, be certaintorustproof theequipment bycoating

witha light oilorsilicone.
