1.5 Applicationlimitations
Thedehumidier conforms to the emission limits of residential, commercial and light-industrial
environments except for the emission limits for harmonics emission (EN 61000-3-12).
As the equipment exceeds the limits for harmonics it must not be used in residential, commercial or
light-industrial environment without taking proper steps regarding the power installation like supplying the
equipment from a dedicated transformer connected to t he high or medium voltage network.

2 Dehumidifierdesign
2.1 Productdescription
The desiccant dehumidier has been designed to effectively dehumidify the air in environments requiring
low air humidity.
All functional components are enclosed in a corrosion resistant Aluzink
®
casing (standard) or stainless steel
casing (option) which makes installation and maintenance easy. The unit is constructed on a steel base frame
which allows the use of a fork-lift truck during transportation and installation.
The electrical control system complies with standard EN 60204-1. The electrical components are mounted
on bus bars. The dehumidier is manufactured according to E uropean standards and the established
requirements for CE-marking.

Figure 2.1 R otor principle
1. Process air
2. Dr y air
3. Reactivation air
4. Wet air
The desiccant rotor is the adsorption dehumidifying component in the unit. The rot or structure is
comprised of a large number of small air channels.
The desiccant rotor is made of a composite material that is highly effective in attracting and retaining water
vapour. T he rotor is divided in two zones. The airow to be dehumidied, process air, passes through the
largest zone of the rotor and then leaves the rotor as dry air. Since the rotor rotates slowly, the incoming air
always meets a dry zone on the rotor, thus creating a continuous dehumidication process.
Theairow tha t is used to dry t he rotor, r e a c tivation air, is heated. The reactivation air passes through
the rotor in the opposite direction to the process air and leaves the rotor a s wet air (warm, moist air). This
principle enables t he dehumidier to work effectively, even at freezing temperatures.

2.5 Hightemperaturecut-out
Thedehumidier is equipped with safety therm ostats (HTC O:s) w hich prevents it from being overheated
and damaged if the reactivation air becomes too hot.
A thermostat with sensing bulb and capillary tube measures the temperature in the reactivation air duct, in
front of the rotor. The therm ostat has a reset butt on on the t hermostat housing. In a ddition, one (MX² 30,
35) or two bimetal disc thermostats are located on top of the reactivation heater elements.
If the reactivation air temperature exc eeds the therm ostat setting s, the reac tivation heater is switched off an d
the alarm message “React Heater H TC O” is shown on the control panel display.
After an alarm, the safety thermostats must be reset according to the following:
Reset the circuit breakers for the reactivation heater on the electrical panel.
Press the reset button on the therm ostat housing. See Figure 2.7 for how to access the ther mostat
housing.

2.6 Configurationfeatures
This chapter includes infor mation about functions and components that can be added w hen ordering an
MX² dehumidier.
2.6.1 Insulatedprocessairinlet
All dehumidier units supplied with pre-cooled process air should have insulated process air inlet. The
process air sector in front of the rotor has an internal lining of isolation to prevent condensation on the unit.
2.6.2 Processfancontrol
The process fan is equippe
d with a frequency converter for controlling the f an speed. The process fan
control can be congure
dasxed speed or variable speed according to below:
Fixed speed
The frequency conve rter for the process fan is pre-set at t he factory and the process fan always runs with a
constant speed that gives the rated process airow.
Variable sp eed
The frequency conver
ter for the process fan is controlled either by ow or pressure.
At ow control, a pressure sensor measures the pressure difference over the inlet cone on the process fan. At
pressure control, a pressure sensor measures the air pressure in the dry air duct.
Th e a ctual value from the pressure sensor is calcula ted, tog e the r with the fan coefcient, by the PLC in the
control system. The PLC compares the actual value w ith the set point value and changes the command
signal to the frequency converter if there is a difference b etween the values.

MX² 35-95
Figure 2.8 Handle for bypass damper
An installed bypass damper kit allows a xed airow to be us ed when the process airow exceeds t he
maximum rotor ow capacity. The bypass function consists of an adjustable damper positioned in the
bypass airow channel. The bypass airow channel is integ rated with the unit and passes under the rotor.

7. Warm purge air
Energy Recover y Purge (ERP) and Energ y Efciency Purge (EEP) are two energy saving solutions that
recycles heat f rom the rotor, after the reactivation section in the rotational direction of the rotor. A minor
part of the reactivation airow is bypassed to the war m sector of the rotor, before the airow enters the
reactivation heater. T he airow is heated up by the rotor and then mixed with the reactivation airow, after
the r eactivation heater. The recycled heat from the rotor increases the efciency and reduces the energy
consumption.
Compared to a standard unit, ERP will give the same dehumidication capacity with reduced reactivation
heater energ y. With EEP, the reactivat ion heater energy is the same as in a standard unit, while the
dehumidication capacity is increased.
Thepurge airow duct on MX² 30 is installed on the rear side of the unit. The purge airow (ERP, EEP,
LDP)canbeadjustedwithadamperinstalledontheduct.

7. Adjustable damper
Low Dewpoint Purge (L
DP) is used to enable e xtra low dewpoints. A minor part of the process airow is
forced through a sma
ller sector of the rotor which, according to the rotor rotation direction, is positioned
directly after the r
eactivation sector. The result is that a part of the process air is taken off (purge air) and the
rotor ma terial is c
ooled down before it is exposed to the dry air outlet sector. The warm purge airow which
is drawn from the s
maller sector of the rotor passes an adjustable damper and enters the reactivation air just
before the react
ivation heater. This makes drying of the rotor more efcient.

2.6.6 Pre-reactivationheater
A pre-reactivat ion heater is an additional heater which fur ther reduces energy costs. It is installed on t he
reactivation air inlet and consists of a heating coil and a control valve with actuator. The heating coil uses
steam or hot water as heating medium and is connected to the plant steam supply or district heating system.
During normal operating conditions the pre-reactivation heater functions as the main heater whereas the
electric reactivation heater is not in use. During peak load periods that require more dehumidication
capacity, or if the heating medium supply becomes insufcient, the built-in regulation equipment s tarts
the electric reactivation heater.
The control valve and a ctuato
r are delivered separately if ord ered, a nd must be installed.
