APS 120/360 Setup Guide
The following instructions should help you in setting up the equipment and in demonstrating the
capabilities of the APS120 or APS360 unit.
The package should contain the following equipment
● One APS120 or APS360 Controller Unit
● One 9 VAC Power Supply for APS120 or APS360
● Two standard RJ-11 telephone cables
● One APSXMTR unit
● One APSXMTR Power supply and data harness
●
One APSXMTR 400MHz1/2 wave Antenna and right angle BNC connector.
Setup of the equipment is as follows:
Step 1:
Unpack and verify that all of the above items are present.
Step 2:
Place the APS120 or APS360 Controller Unit in the desired location. The unit may be either
wall mounted or placed in some other secure location.
Step 3:
Connect the APS 9VAC power supply to the unit via the labeled barrel jack connection. The
barrel jack is located on the bottom right hand comer of the unit.
Step 4:
Connect the APS 9VAC power supply to a standard 110V AC outlet. The RED Power LED on
the front of the unit should be lit. It is normal for the GREEN In Use and Program LEDs to light briefly
upon power up. They should return to the unlit condition after a few seconds.
Step 5: Place the APSXMTR unit in the desired location. The unit may be either wall mounted or
placed in some other secure location.
Step 6:
Connect the APSXMTR Antenna to the BNC connector located on the top of the APSXMTR
unit. You may or may not employ the right angle connector. IMPORTANT: NEVER OPERATE THE
APS120 UNIT WITHOUT HAVING THE APSXMTR ANTENNA CONNECTED. DAMAGE TO THE
APSXMTR MAY RESULT!
Step 7: Connect the APSXMTR Power supply and data harness to the APSXMTR. The harness is
labeled at each end to ensure proper connection. The APSXMTR has two connectors located on the
top of the unit. The APS XMTR harness connects to the 9 pin female serial connector. The harness is
shaped like a ‘Y’ cable with the power supply at one end of the ‘Y’ and the Transmitter at the other end.
Step 8: Connect the other 9 pin female connector to the TRANSMITTER port on the bottom of the
APS120 Controller unit. This connector is labeled “Connects to Computer”. This connector is located at
the center of the ‘Y’ cable.

Step 9:
Connect the APSXMTR Power supply to a standard 110V AC outlet. The PWR/BAT LED on
the bottom of the APSXMTR unit should light.
Step 10:
Connect the two RJ-11 telephone cables to the ports labeled LINE1 and LINE2 on the bottom
of the APS120 or APS360 Controller unit. DO NOT connect the telephone cables to LINE3. LINE3 is
not available for use in the APS 120 system.
Step 11:
Connect the other end of each telephone cable to a standard analog station port on your PBX.
These ports shall be used to access the paging function of the APS120 or APS360 system. Note these
extension numbers. If possible they may be placed in a ‘hunt group’ or in a reciprocal rollover group.
This allows the use of a single ‘hunt’ number to access either of the two lines.
Step 12: Once all of the above connections have been made run a simple test. Call the analog
extension associated with LINE1 or LINE2. The APS120 or APS360 should answer and begin to play
the main greeting. Choose the paging option by pressing “1”. Then enter the pager id 103. Follow this
with a numeric message. Once the prompt is completed the pager numbered 103 should receive a
page containing the input digits. If this testis successful for each line then the unit is operating properly.
If there is any problem, first check and verify all of the connections. If the problem persists please
contact the SMDS 1(800) 242-2121.
Operation:
The operation of the APS120 or APS360 is very simple. The unit is pre-loaded with the APS Basic
Database. This database supports a maximum of 120 or 360 pagers. Each pager may have a user
name recorded in the Controller unit. The name is played as part of the confirmation process. In the
event that no name is recorded the pager number alone is played as part of the confirmation process.
Sending A Page:
A caller arriving at the APS120 or APS360 is greeted with a pre-recorded announcement. This
announcement is customizable.
●
Upon pressing 1 the caller is prompted to enter in the pager id number to be paged.
● Enter the pager number by pressing the proper DTMF keys - a ‘#’ key may be pressed to speed
up the process.
●
Enter your numeric message, up to a maximum of 20 digits - a '#' key may be pressed to speed up
the process.
● Page is sent to the selected Pager.
The valid numbers range from 1 to 120 for the APS120. The valid numbers range from 1 to 360 for the
APS360.
The Alphanumeric pagers supported by the APS120 range from number 101 to 120. All other pager
numbers in the basic database are Numeric only. The range of Numeric pagers is 1 to 100.
The Alphanumeric pagers supported by the APS360 range from number 101 to 120, 221 to 240 and
341 to 360. The range of Numeric pagers is 1 to 100,121 to 220, and 241 to 340.

The Alphanumeric pagers may also receive canned alphanumeric messages. The canned messages
available in the APS120 or APS360 Basic unit are:

In order to send the message to an alphanumeric pager the user must press the ‘*’ key when prompted
to enter their message followed by the corresponding message number and a ‘#’ key.

Enter the security code by pressing the key sequence ’9' ’8’ ’3’ ’2’ ‘#’
Choose “Record Announcement"
from the next menu.
Enter the password by pressing the key sequence ’6’ '2' ’6’ ’3’ ‘#’
Choose “Announcement 1“ to be recorded - Announcement 1 is the Main Greeting.
Record the Announcement and save it by following the prompts.
Exit the menu.
