The ProjectCalc
®
Classic was designed specifically for
home decorators. It’s an indispensable tool for all your
home decorating projects! It helps you quickly figure
project material quantities and costs for paint, tile and
wallpaper, as well as linear distances, areas/volumes.
Unlike other calculators, it works and converts directly in
Feet-Inches-Fractions, Yards, Metric, Square and Cubic,
so you don’t have to figure tedious math.
Use it to estimate quantities & costs for:
• Tile
• Paint
• Wallpaper
Basic Keys
o — On/Clear Key
Turns power on. Pressing once clears the display.
O
Turns all power off.
+ – x ÷ =
Arithmetic operation keys.
%
Percent key.
0 9 and
Keys used for entering numbers.
/ — Fraction Bar Key
Used to enter fractions. Fractions can be entered as 1/2,
1/16, 3/2, etc.
KEY DEFINITIONS
POCKET REFERENCE GUIDE - 1
Convert Key Functions
Ç — Convert Key
Used with the dimensional unit keys to convert between
dimensions (e.g., feet-inches to yards), the decorating
keys to calculate material quantities, or with other keys
to access special functions.
Ç – — Sign (+ / –)
Sets value on display to plus or minus. (Repeated presses
of Ç – will change sign from plus or minus.)
Ç ÷ — Square Root
Finds square root of value in display.
Ç x — x
2
Finds square of value in display.
Ç % — Pi (π)
Constant 3.141593
Ç • — Cost
“Cost” function that allows you to compute total material
cost, given a unit dimension and an entered Per Unit Cost.
Memory
Ç + — M+
Adds or stores a value in the cumulative memory (e.g.,
1 5 0 Ç +). Semi-permanent means the value is
cleared when the calculator is turned off.
Ç = — MR
Recalls memory value (e.g., if 150 has been stored in
Memory, pressing Ç = will display 150).
Ç o — MC
Clears memory value.
POCKET REFERENCE GUIDE - 2
Dimensional Unit Keys
y — Yards Key
Enters or converts to yards.
f — Feet Key
Enters or converts to feet as whole or decimal numbers.
Also used with the i and / keys for entering Feet-
Inch Fraction values (e.g., 6 f 9 i 1 / 2).
Repeated presses during conversions toggle between
Feet-Inch Fractions and Decimal Feet.
i — Inch Key
Enters or converts to inches as whole or decimal numbers.
Also used with the / key for entering fractional inch
values (e.g., 9 i 1 / 2). Repeated presses during
conversions toggle between Fractional and Decimal Inches.
m — Meter Key
Enters or converts to meters.
Entering Square or Cubic
Dimensions
To label a dimension as "square" or "cubic," enter the
value, then press the desired unit key twice for square
and three times for cubic. For example, to enter 25 cubic
yards, press 2 5 y y y.
POCKET REFERENCE GUIDE - 3
Fractional Resolution
Your calculator is set to display fractional values to the
nearest 16th of an inch (default setting). The current
fractional resolution can be displayed by pressing Ç
/. Repeated presses of / will then revolve through
the available settings: 1/16, 1/32, 1/64, 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8.
The setting you last see on the display will be perma-
nently set when you exit the fractional setting display
(simply press any other key to exit).
Your calculator will also toggle between the highest frac-
tional resolution available and the set resolution with
repeated presses of the Fraction Bar / when a fraction
is displayed.
Decorating Keys
The following keys help you quickly estimate material
quantities for common decorating projects. Note: if you
clear the display (i.e. press o) and then press one of
the decorating keys, the conversion factor will be dis-
played. For example, pressing Ç 8 (Wallpaper) after
clearing the display will show the area of coverage for
one roll of Wallpaper.
Ç 7 (Paint)
Calculates volume of paint, based on an entered area.
Finds quantity in gallons, quarts, or pints with repeated
key presses.
Ç 8 (Wallpaper)
Calculates number of rolls of wallpaper, based on an
entered area.
POCKET REFERENCE GUIDE - 4
Ç 9 (Tile)
Finds the number of tiles, based on an entered area.
Repeated key presses will scroll between numbers of
tiles for various "standard" tile sizes in this order: 18",
16", 13", 12", 10", 8", 6", 4", 2", 1" and 24" (starts from
last tile displayed).
Tile Note: Tile sizes are shown in inches, not square
inches. In other words, a 6" tile is really 6" x 6," or a 36
square-inch tile, but it is labeled as a 6" size. Also, grout
width (e.g., 1/8 inch surrounding each tile) is not
included in the calculation.
The ProjectCalc Classic uses the below standard sizes
or coverage values to determine quantities:
Application Standard Sizes or Coverage
Paint 1 gallon covers 350 square feet
Wallpaper 1 roll covers 56 square feet
(European double roll)
Tile Sizes 18", 16", 13", 12", 10", 8", 6", 4",
2", 1", 24"

Some basic examples are listed below to help you quick-
ly determine the quantities of materials required for vari-
ous home remodeling/decorating projects, such as
installing tiles, painting and wallpapering rooms.
Note on Adding a Waste Allowance: When estimating
quantities, you may want to factor in a Waste Allowance
to make sure you have enough material to allow for
error. For example, add 10% to your total by pressing
+ 1 0 %.
Also, for most problems, the Decorating Keys will also
find the Coverage Area given an entered Quantity. For
example, you can find the Coverage Area of Paint given
"X" Number of Cans.

need extra tile. Note: Grout width (e.g., 1/8 inch
between tiles) not included in the calculation.

popular tile sizes. Tile sizes may not be displayed in the

You can also use the ProjectCalc Classic to determine
the total cost of a project, if you know the material’s cost
per unit. See the following example.
Paint: Cost of
Estimate the amount of paint needed for a room measur-
ing 15’ long x 12’ wide x 8’ high. If it costs $17.50 per
gallon, what is the total cost? First, multiply the perime-
ter of the room with the wall height, and then calculate
Paint.

Accuracy
The normal display is seven digits; fraction display four
digits. Fraction resolution displays values to the nearest
16th of an inch, unless changed by user. Each calcula-
tion is carried out internally to ten digits.
Auto Shut-Off and Batteries:
Auto Shut-Off: After 8-12 minutes of non-use.
Batteries Included: Two LR-43 batteries.
Battery-Life: 575 hours of actual use.
To replace the batteries, use a small Phillip’s head screw-
driver (or you can also use a screwdriver found in eye-
glass repair kits) and unscrew the
single screw
in the center of the battery door,
located on the back of the cal-
culator (see diagram).
Carefully remove the
battery door, remove the
old batteries from the clips
and replace them with two new
LR-43 batteries. Make sure the positive sides (+) are
facing up. Replace the battery door and re-attach the
screw.
Note: Replacement LR-43 batteries are available at most
discount or electronics stores. Or, call Calculated
Industries at 1-800-854-8075.
