GLOSSARY (ref. fig. 1)
a) HEAD (2): Houses the eyepieces and allows the observation of specimens.
There are three types available: monocular, binocular or trinocular.
b) STAND (4): Base and body of the microscope that supports the head.
c) STAGE (7): Mechanical platform where the slide-mounted specimen is positioned.
Equipped with a spring-arm slide holder and features co-axial controls that adjust
the x-y movement of the specimen.
d) CONDENSER (8): System of converging lenses, which concentrates the light beam
onto the specimen.This light is formed into a cone that projects into the objective
lens; it is provided with a diaphragm called the condenser diaphragm (19), which
adjusts the light beam cone angle, and sometimes with an additional wide-field lens
to still further enlarge the beam. A filter holder ring (20), positioned at the base of
the condenser, allows a blue conversion filter to be inserted (except in model B5
where it is placed in the collector filter housing 21).
e) FINE-COARSE MOVEMENT (11): Coarse-fine focussing system.
f) EYEPIECE (13): Final image magnification lens system
g) REVOLVING NOSEPIECE (15): Mechanical rotating disc on which the objectives
are mounted.With sprung, slotted stops to ensure objective alignment.
h) OBJECTIVE (16): Primary image magnification lens system
i) ILLUMINATOR COLLECTOR (23):A system of lenses, positioned on the
stand’s base, which magnifies the light emitted by the lamp. It can be equipped with
a diaphragm called a collector diaphragm (22).

BASIC SERIES
1. OPERATING YOUR OPTECH BASIC (ref. fig. 1)
1.a) After removing the protective packaging, insert the mains plug into a suitable supply
socket, checking that the voltage matches that indicated on the identification tag
situated at the rear of the stand (4).
1.b) Turn on using the power on/off switch (12).
1.c) Place the specimen slide on the stage (7), securing it using the spring slide holders (5).
1.d) Select the 4x objective (16), by rotating the nosepiece (15) until this objective locks
into its sprung slot
1.e) Using the coarse/fine focussing control knob (11) raise or lower the stage (7) until
the specimen comes into fine focus.
1.f) Search for the specific area to be observed, by gently moving the specimen slide
with your fingers.
1.g) If higher magnification is required, rotate the nosepiece (15) selecting the required
objective and refocussing, as necessary, using the coarse/fine control knob (11).
1.h) Search for the best balance between resolution, luminosity, contrast and depth of
field by rotating the disk condenser located under the stage (7).
2. CARE AND MAINTENANCE
2.1 Cleaning.
ATTENTION: always unplug the microscope before cleaning.
•To remove any dust on the lenses, use a soft bristle brush or lens cleaning tissue.
•To remove fingerprints or greasy marks from the lenses, use lens cleaning tissue or
a soft cloth soaked in a solvent such as xylene, benzene or ethyl alcohol.
•To clean the external, painted surfaces of the microscope, use a gentle detergent
and a soft cloth.
•We recommend that you always keep the microscope protected from dust after
use, a dust cover is provided for this purpose.
Please do not use strong solvents to clean the external surfaces of the microscope;
they may damage the lacquer coating and plastic components.

2.2 Lamp or fuse replacement.
ATTENTION: always unplug the microscope before replacing the lamp
or the fuse. Be very careful not to touch the new lamp with your fingers:
handle it using paper or clean tissue. Dirty lamps must be cleaned with
ethyl alcohol.
Unscrew the rubber feet, located under the microscope’s base, and take away the
protective panel.
Having replaced the detective lamp or fuse, replace the protective panel and screw the
rubber feet back on again.
2.3 Limit stop adjustment.
If focussing on the specimen at 400x magnification and the objective touches or
breaks the slide, please adjust the limit stop using the special screw (6 - ref. fig. 1).
OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES
MECHANICAL SLIDE CARRIER
Mechanical system that adjusts the x-y movement of the specimen.
Installation:
Unscrew the spring slide holder (5 - ref. fig. 1) screws and take them away.
Insert the mechanical slide carrier using the locating pins in it’s underside.
which mate directly into apertures in the standard stage.
Tighten the locking screw.

BIOSTAR SERIES
1. MICROSCOPE ASSEMBLY (ref. fig. 1)
1.a) Remove the protective packaging of the stand (4) and of the head (2) and mount
the head onto the stand, being careful to tighten the head locking screw (3).
1.b) Carefully insert the eyepieces (13) into the head (2).
1.c) Firmly screw the objectives (16) into the nosepiece (15), positioning them,
clockwise, in increasing order of magnification.
1.d) Insert the blue conversion filter into the condenser filter holder ring (20).
In the case of models B5 and B5HP this filter has to be placed onto the collector
filter housing (21).
2. OPERATING YOUR OPTECH BIOSTAR
2.1 Set-up (ref. fig. 1)
2.1 a) Insert the mains supply plug into a suitable supply socket, checking that the voltage
matches that indicated on the identification tag situated at the rear of the stand (4).
2.1 b) Turn on using the power on/off switch (12).
2.1 c) Place the specimen slide on the stage (7), securing it with the spring-arm slide holder (5).
2.1d) Using the co-axial spring-arm slide holder control knobs (10), position the specimen
directly under the objective (16).
2.2 Focussing onto the specimen (ref. fig. 1)
2.2 a) Select the 10x objective by rotating the nosepiece revolver (15) until this
objective locks into it’s sprung slot.
2.2 b) Using the coarse/fine focussing control knob (11) raise or lower the stage (7)
until the specimen comes into focus, then use the fine focussing control knob to
obtain the clearest image.
2.2 c) Adjust the light intensity using the brightness control (24) until a clear, bright
image of the specimen is obtained.
2.2 d) If higher magnification is required, rotate the nosepiece revolver (15) selecting
the required objective and refocussing, if necessary, using the coarse/fine focussing
control knob (11).
2.3 Adjustment of the binocular or trinocular heads (2 - ref. fig. 1)
2.3 a) Adjust the interpupillary distance of the binocular
eyepiece tubes, unifying the right and left fields
of view (ref. fig. 2).
2.3 b) Looking only through the right eye
on the right eyepiece (13 - ref. fig. 1),
adjust the focus on the specimen using
the coarse/fine focussing control knobs
(11 - ref. fig. 1).

2.3 c) Now looking only through the left eye and using the left eyepiece (13 - ref. fig. 1),
adjust the focus on the specimen using just the dioptric compensation ring (14 - ref. fig. 1).
In this way, both eyes will view the specimen together in perfect focus.
2.4 Condenser centring (7 - ref. fig. 1) (B4 and B5 models only)
2.4 a) Selecting the 4x objective, close the condenser diaphragm (19 - ref. fig. 1)
2.4 b) Lower the condenser (8 - ref. fig. 1) using the condenser control knob (9 - ref. fig. 1)
until, observing through the eyepieces (13 - ref. fig. 1),
there is a sharp image of the internal edges
of the condenser diaphragm (19 - ref. fig. 1).
2.4 c) If the internal edges are not in the centre of the viewing
field, centre the condenser (8 - ref. fig. 1) by adjusting
the condenser centring screws (17 - ref. fig. 1).
2.5 Using the condenser diaphragm.
Adjusting the condenser diaphragm (19 - ref. fig. 1)
ensures that the specimen image displays the best balance
between resolution, luminosity, contrast and depth of field.
We suggest opening the diaphragm to approximately 70-80% of it’s maximum
aperture (see fig. 3). If the objective is changed then the condenser diaphragm
setting must be re-adjusted accordingly.
3. CARE AND MAINTENANCE
3.1 Cleaning
ATTENTION: always unplug the microscope before cleaning.
•To remove any dust on the lenses, use a soft bristle brush or lens cleaning tissue.
•To remove fingerprints or greasy marks from the lenses, use lens cleaning
tissue or a soft cloth soaked in a solvent such as xylene, benzene or ethyl
alcohol.The same solvents can also be used to clean oil immersion objectives
(16 - ref. fig. 1) NOTE: please remember to remove oil from these objectives
every time you finish using them.
•To clean the external, painted surfaces of the microscope,
use a gentle detergent and a soft cloth.
•We recommend that you always keep the microscope protected from dust
after use, a dust cover is provided for this purpose.
3.2 Please do not:
Remove the eyepieces (13 - ref. fig. 1) from the head, after fitting; dust ingress
could dirty prisms and internal lenses, reducing optical performance.
Use strong solvents to clean the external painted parts of the microscope;
they may damage the lacquer coating and plastic components.
3. 3 Lamp replacement
(except for model B5HP)
ATTENTION:
always unplug the microscope
before replacing the lamp.
Be very careful not to touch
the new lamp
with your fingers:
handle it using paper
or clean tissue.
Dirty lamps must be cleaned with ethyl alcohol.
The lamp is located under the microscope’s stand (4 - ref. fig. 1). Referring to
figure 4, loosen the screw (4a) and open the housing cover. Replace the defective
lamp with a new one of equivalent specification.
After fitting the new lamp, close the cover and retighten the screw (4a).
3.4 Lamp centring.
Select the 4x objective (16 - ref. fig. 1), and then switch the illuminator on
(12 - ref. fig. 1). Looking through the eyepieces, you’ll note a luminous circle;
if it is not central within the field of view, referring to figure 4, proceed as follows:
3.4 a) Incline the microscope and loosen the screw (4b).
3.4 b) Place the microscope in the usual working position and move it away from the
support in order to be able to reach the screw (4b) with your hand.
3.4 c) Looking through the eyepieces, try to centre the luminous circle in the field of
view by gently moving the screw (4b) in all the directions until the correct,
centred position is attained.
3.4 d) Once the lamp has been centred, and continuing to view through the eyepieces,
carefully retighten the screw (4b) ensuring that the lamp remains steady throughout.
3. 5 Fuse replacement.
ATTENTION: always unplug the microscope before replacing the fuse.
The fuse is located in the housing under the microscope’s stand (4 - ref. fig. 1).
To r eplace it, loosen the fuse holder, remove the broken fuse and replace it
with a new one.Tighten the fuse holder again.

MICRO-PHOTOGRAPHIC REFLEX
CAMERA DEVICE MODEL MF (ref. fig. 5).
Equipment:
T2-ring (5f); intermediate optic 2,5x-4x (5e);
WF 10x eyepiece with photographic graticule;
reflex camera body 24x36 (not supplied - available
on request).
a) Installation:
1) Having loosened the locking screw
(5b - ref. fig. 5) of the camera tube in the
trinocular head (1 - ref. fig. 1) and removed
the protective cover, mount the tube
containing the 2,5x-4x intermediate optic
(5e - ref. fig. 5).Tighten the locking screw
again (5b - ref. fig. 5).
2) Screw fit the T2 ring (5f - rif. fig. 5) to the
intermediate optic (5e - ref.fig.5), then lock
the reflex camera body onto the ring.
b) Preparation of the
micro-photographic device:
1) Substitute an eyepiece (13 - ref. fig. 1)
in the head with the WF 10x eyepiece with
photographic graticule.
2) Focus the photographic graticule using the
dioptric compensation ring of the same eyepiece.

OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES
c) How to select the photographic optic 2,5x or 4x:
1) To get the 4x magnification, loosen the external screw (5d - ref. fig. 5) and reach
the 4x position. Lightly tighten the screw (5d - ref. fig. 5). Please check the lever
(5c - ref. fig. 1), positioned inside the photographic tube, is set to the 4x magnifying factor.
2) To get the 2,5x magnification, slide the lever (5c - ref. fig. 5), positioned inside the
photographic tube, to the 2,5x magnifying factor and lightly tighten the external
screw (5d - ref. fig. 5) on the 2,5x position.
d) How to take photos:
1) Place the specimen slide onto the stage (7 - ref. fig. 1) and, using the spring-arm
slide holder control knobs (10 - ref. fig. 1), search for the area to be photographed.
2) Focus on the specimen with high precision with the coarse/fine control knobs
(11 - ref. fig. 1).
3) Set the microscope illuminator to maximum intensity through the brightness
control (24 - ref. fig. 1).
4) Take the photo.
PLEASE NOTE:With prism slide knob (5a - ref. fig. 5) - equipped trinocular heads,
please remember to pull the slide knob outwards before taking the photo.

MICRO-PHOTOGRAPHIC REFLEX CAMERA DEVICE MODEL MFM (ref. fig. 6)
Equipment: T2-ring (6d); intermediate optic 4X complete with focussing eyepiece (6c);
reflex camera body 24x36 (not supplied - available on request).
a) Installation:
1) Having loosened the locking screw (5b - ref. fig. 6) of the camera tube
(1 - ref. fig. 1) and removed the protective cover, mount the tube containing the
4x intermediate optic.Tighten the locking screw again (5b - ref. fig. 6).
2) Screw fit the T2 ring (6d - ref. fig. 6) to the intermediate optic, then lock the reflex
camera body onto the ring.
b) How to take photos:
1) Place the specimen slide onto the stage (7 - ref. fig. 1) and using the spring-arm
slide holder control knobs (10 - ref. fig. 1), search for the area to be photographed.
2) Focus the photographic graticule using the eyepiece dioptric compensation ring
(6c - ref. fig. 6) of the MFM micro-photographic device.
3) Focus on the specimen with high precision with the coarse/fine control knobs
(11 - ref. fig. 1).
4) Set the microscope illuminator to maximum intensity through the brightness control
(24 - ref. fig. 1).
5) Take the photo.
PLEASE NOTE:With prism slide knob (5a - ref. fig. 6) - equipped trinocular heads,
please remember to pull the slide knob outwards before taking the photo.
ADAPTER FOR DIGITAL CAMERAS
a) Installation:
1) Loosen the locking screw (5b - ref. fig. 6) of the trinocular tube in the head and
remove the protective cover.
2) Attach the adapter onto the camera.
3) Mount the digital camera, with the adapter, onto the trinocular tube,
tightening the locking screw (5b - ref. fig. 6).
b) How to take photos:
1) Place the specimen slide onto the stage (7 - ref. fig. 1) and using the spring-arm
slide holder control knobs (10 - ref. fig. 1), search for the area to be photographed.
2) Focus the photographic graticule using the eyepiece dioptric compensation ring
(6c - ref. fig. 6) of the micro-photographic device.
3) Focus on the specimen with high precision with the coarse/fine control knobs
(11 - ref. fig. 1).
4) Set the microscope illuminator to maximum intensity through the brightness control
(24 - ref. fig. 1).
5) Take the photo.
PLEASE NOTE:With prism slide knob (5a - ref. fig. 6)-equipped trinocular heads,
please remember to pull the slide knob outwards before taking the photo.

POSITIVE PHASE CONTRAST DEVICE
(models B4 and B5 only)
Equipment: phase contrast condenser (7a - ref. fig. 7)
phase objectives (7c - ref. fig. 7) - centring telescopic
eyepiece (7b - ref. fig. 7).
a) Installation:
a.1) Having loosened the fixing screw (18 - ref. fig. 1),
remove the brightfield condenser (8 - ref. fig. 1)
and insert the phase contrast condenser
(7a - ref. fig. 7). Retighten the screw (18 - ref. fig. 1)
again.
a.2) Replace the bright field objectives (16 - ref. fig. 1)
with phase contrast versions (7c - ref. fig. 7),
positioning them, clockwise, in increasing order
of magnification.
b) Centring:
1) Replace an eyepiece (13 - ref. fig. 1) with the
centring telescopic eyepiece (7b - ref. fig. 7)
supplied with the phase contrast device.
2) Using the 10x objective, set the phase contrast
condenser (7a - ref. fig. 7) to the number 10
position.Through the centring telescopic eyepiece
(7b - ref.fig. 7), check the phase rings are concentric,
as shown in figure 8a.
3) If the rings are not concentric (figure 8b), centre
them, carefully moving only the knurled ring
positioned in conjunction with the turret
(7a-1 - ref. fig. 7) of the phase condenser.
4) For centring the system when using higher
magnifications, repeat procedure 3) above,
remembering to always position the condenser
at the same number as the magnification value,
shown on the objectives (25x-40x-100x).

POLARIZED LIGHT SYSTEM MODEL Pol 3
(for the stands slit equipped model only)
Equipment: Slide analyzer filter and polarizer filter.
Installation: Insert the slide analyzer filter in the special slit located above the nosepiece
revolver (15 - ref. fig. 1).
Now place the polarizer filter on the collector filter housing (21 - ref. fig. 1 and fig. 9a) and
increase the light intensity.
Rotate the polarizer filter until you view the greatest darkness in the viewing field and then
commence observation of the specimen.

DRY AND OIL DARK- FIELD
CONDENSERS
Installation:
Loosen the locking screw (18 - ref. fig. 1).
Replace the bright-field condenser (8 - ref. fig. 1)
with the dark-field version.
Retighten the locking screw (18 - ref. fig. 1).
It is important, before using the oil immersion
model, to put a drop of immersion oil between
the frontal lens of the condenser and the
specimen slide.
PLS. NOTE: Can be used up to a maximum
magnification of 400x.
POLARIZED LIGHT SYSTEM MODEL
Pol 2
Equipment: Analyzer and polarizer filters.
Installation: Referring to figure 1, having removed
the eyepieces (13), dismount the head (2) after
loosening the locking screw (3). In the base of
the head you will find the tube lens (9a-1 - ref. fig. 9)
which has to be unscrewed anti-clockwise.
Having removed the lens, insert the analyzer filter
and retighten the tube lens (9a-1 - ref. fig. 9).
Now place the polarizer filter on the collector
filter housing (21 - ref. fig. 1 and fig. 9a) and increase
the light intensity.
Rotate the polarizer filter until you view the
greatest darkness in the viewing field and then
commence observation of the specimen.

CCD
VIDEOCAMERA ADAPTER
a) Installation:
a.1) Remove the protective cover of the trinocular
head (1 - ref. fig. 1) loosening the locking screw
(5b - ref. fig. 10).
a.2) Screw the adapter to the videocamera.
a.3) Mount the video camera, complete with VS
adapter, onto the head, tightening the locking
screw (5b - ref. fig. 10).
b) Operation:
b.1) We suggest that the blue conversion filter is
used, inserting it into the microscope’s condenser
filter holder ring (20 - ref. fig. 1).
b.2) Keep the microscope illumination low to avoid a
colour saturation on the monitor.
b.3) Try to focus on the specimen as finely as possible
using the coarse/fine control knobs (11 - ref. fig. 1).
b.4) Observe the video screen.
PLEASE NOTE:
With prism slide knob (5a - ref. fig. 10) - equipped
trinocular heads, please remember to pull the slide
knob outwards before looking at the video screen.
