SongBook FAQ’s: Page 1
1. Should I use regular alkaline batteries, NiCad, or NiMH with the SongBook?
The answer really depends on how often you plan to use the SongBook on battery
power. If you won't be using batteries very often, it will probably be more economical
to use regular alkaline batteries. If you will be using batteries very often, consider using
NiCad or NiMH since these can be used over and over many times. They are more
expensive than regular alkaline batteries, but in the long run may prove cheaper than
constantly buying regular batteries. NiMH batteries have the added advantage of being
environmentally friendly.
2. Do I need to buy a separate charger?
No. The SongBook has a built-in charger for charging rechargeable batteries.
3. How much playback time can I expect when using batteries with the SongBook?
There are too many variables to provide one specific time. It depends on the program
material (example: talk radio needs less power than rap), volume level (higher volume
requires more power), temperature (very hot and very cold temps tax batteries), and battery
power. Regarding NiMH battery power, a higher mA rating will yield longer playback times
but also require longer charge times. It is also very important to know that brand new
rechargeable batteries require a conditioning ("break-in") period, usually around 5-6 full
charge/discharge cycles. The same is true for rechargeable batteries that have been
unused for a long period of time. So initial playback times may be shorter with brand
new rechargeable batteries
4. What rating should I use when buying NiMH batteries for the SongBook?
The SongBook has the unique distinction of operating on NiMH, NiCad, or standard
“AA” alkaline batteries. When purchasing any battery type it is best to buy a brand name,
as inexpensive generic batteries do not usually last as long and have more of a tendency
to leak or corrode. When purchasing NiMH batteries for the SongBook, any mA rating up
to 2200mA is recommended. Higher ratings such as 2500 or 2700 will cost more but will
yield even longer playback times. However, because of their larger capacity, they require
two complete charge cycles rather than one. After the first complete charge, turn the
SongBook On and then Off to start the charging cycle again and complete the charge.
5. How long does it take to fully charge depleted rechargeable batteries?
This depends on the type of rechargeable battery, but in general, the charge time usually
will not exceed 5 hours.
6. Can I load the SongBook with a few standard Alkaline batteries and a few
rechargeable batteries at the same time?
No. All 6 batteries should be all Alkaline or all rechargeable or you may damage the
SongBook.
7. How much playback time is left when only one bar is remaining on the battery
indicator?
This varies depending on the battery type because the battery indicator is intended to
provide an approximate level of remaining power. In general, one bar represents about
25% of remaining power for Alkaline batteries, and about 10% for rechargeable. You
may also notice the audio cut in and out 3 or 4 times before the batteries become
exhausted.

8. When the battery indicator is low and I turn the SongBook Off, and then back on
later, the battery indicator shows more power than it did before. Is this normal?
Yes. The batteries “recover” somewhat when the unit is Off. It also takes the microprocessor
a moment to adjust to the battery condition.
9. Is it okay to operate the SongBook using just the power supply and no batteries?
Yes.
10. Is the headphone output stereo?
Yes.
11. What is the 9k/10k switch for?
This adjusts the AM tuner for AM reception should you travel outside of North America
(9k). This switch should be changed while the unit is Off. If it is changed while the
unit is On, you must turn the SongBook Off and then back On again to re-set the
microprocessor.
12. May I leave the Battery/Charger switch in the NiMH/NiCAD position when using
standard Alkaline batteries or vise-versa?
No. This switch lets the charger know whether it should charge the batteries when
the SongBook is plugged in and turned Off. You should never attempt to charge
non-rechargeable batteries. If you are using rechargeable batteries and leave the
switch in the NiMH/NiCAD position, you will be able to charge the batteries.
13. Is the Silver SongBook also weather resistant?
Yes. The Silver SongBook does not have the rubber-coated exterior like the other colors
because of the special colored paint. However, the cabinet has a very tight seal and can
still be used outdoors.
14. How should I care for my SongBook?
Never use household or other chemicals on the finish. Use a slightly damp cloth to clean
the SongBook only when necessary. For your safety, be sure the unit is not plugged in or
turned On during cleaning.
15. Should I buy the PAL or the SongBook?
Both sound about the same, play about as loud, and both have a headphone output and
auxiliary input. The differences primarily lie in features, so determining what features are
most important to you will help you decide which to buy. If you travel a great deal and
need a radio with a clock and an alarm, then the answer is the SongBook. If you don't
need the extra features and just want a good-sounding portable radio with good reception,
then the PAL may fit your needs best.
