Introduction
About MirrorTool
Omneon
MediaTools
are low cost, easy-to-use utilities, designed to ensure greater
operability for broadcast customers. Each
MediaTool
is tightly integrated with the
Omneon
Spectrum™
System, and each runs on Windows® platforms.
The MirrorTool
application is used to ensure that key material on your main Omneon
server is always protected, providing automatic back up of your clips to another Omneon
server or even a PC.
Once installed and set up, MirrorTool runs essentially unattended in the background,
synchronizing the contents on your designated Main and Backup servers.
You can use MirrorTool to schedule distinct levels of content mirroring:
Mirror in one direction: Copy clips from your main server to a backup server. You
can also set MirrorTool to automatically copy content to a backup server as soon as
the new content is recorded onto the main server.
Mirror in both directions: In addition to copying new clips from the main server
to a backup server, copy any new material appearing on a backup server to the main
server, ensuring that the content on both servers always matches.
Mirror manually: You also have the option to control when mirroring occurs
instead of setting specific times.
Customized filtering: Filter mirroring operations by file name, media type,
duration, size, creation date and modification date.
NOTE: MirrorTool operations may affect system performance and the performance of other
applications that are currently running. It is recommended that you take advantage of
MirrorTool’s scheduling features and schedule mirror operations accordingly.

6 MirrorTool Version 2.0
System Requirements
Prior to installing MirrorTool, your PC must conform to the following minimum requirements,
and must be connected by Ethernet to your facility’s LAN:
Pentium 4 or equivalent CPU
256 megabytes (MB) of RAM
•20GB hard drive
At least 3 Megabytes of free disk space
•Windows XP
Display resolution should be set to 1152 x 864 minimum
100 BaseT (Gigabit Ethernet recommended)
You should also turn off Windows Firewall (Menu > Control Panel > Security Center >
Windows Firewall) when using MirrorTool.
System Compatibility
MirrorTool 2.0 is compatible with Omneon Spectrum System software v4.5SR2 (Service Release
2) and v4.6 Releases. You must install the MediaGrid File System Driver for Windows on your
client PC and Omneon Spectrum System software v4.6 to use MirrorTool with the MediaGrid
system. See the Omneon MediaGrid Installation and Configuration Guide for instructions.
What Gets Installed
The application consists of the main MirrorTool executable plus a pdf file of this guide.
MirrorTool Installation
Use the following steps to install MirrorTool on your PC. You will also need to select an
appropriate character set as detailed in About the FTP Client and Character Set.
1It is also highly recommended that you exit all Windows programs at this point.
2If you have not already done so, open the MirrorTool.zip folder that you downloaded
from the Omneon support Web site, and extract the files using the password provided by
Technical Support. Contact Technical Support for assistance.
3Locate the MirrorTool executable file icon from the MirrorTool.zip folder.
4Double-click the MirrorTool icon to begin the installation.
User’s Guide 7
Installing MirrorTool
5Click Next and then follow the installation steps to install MirrorTool.
This completes the MirrorTool installation procedure. Refer to Using MirrorTool to begin using
the application.
About the FTP Client and Character Set
MirrorTool must parse and modify text in QuickTime .mov files. Since QuickTime .mov files
do not support Unicode, the correct character set must be selected for QuickTime using the
System
Manager
application so both MirrorTool and the
MediaDirector
work properly. Select
the ANSI character set appropriate to the version of Windows that MirrorTool is running from
the following site:
http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/nlsweb
NOTE: If English is the only language used in your facility, the default UTF-8 character set should be
used.
MirrorTool Licensing
A license file (provided by Omneon) supplies the licenses for the MirrorTool components. This
file is installed on the “license server” computer.
One license is required for each instance of MirrorTool that is in use. These are “floating licenses”
so any connected computer can run the application, until the total number of purchased (and
licensed) copies are active.
For example: If you have purchased four MirrorTool licenses and you have installed the product
on 20 computers, you can run up to four instances of MirrorTool at any one time. The remaining
16 installations cannot run the tool until one of the first four exits.
Omneon Video Networks
8 MirrorTool Version 2.0
A variety of dialogs may appear at startup time if the application encounters licensing issues (for
example, the license server is down, the license file cannot be found, all licenses are used, etc.). The
figure below shows examples of some of the possible messages you may encounter.
Follow the directions in these dialogs and/or contact your Network Administrator as required to
resolve any issues that arise. Contact Omneon Sales to purchase additional licenses.

Filter: Select Filter to filter files during mirror operations based on criteria that you set.
Filtering can be customized using one or more of the following options:
Case Sensitive: Limit filtering based on uppercase and lowercase letters in the file
name.
To include or exclude file names containing certain words during mirroring
operations, type one or more words in the field you wish to use. Separate words using
a space, comma, semicolon or colon.
Media Type: Specify the media type to filter (Everything, MPEG, DV, Data, Audio
Only). Everything comprises all media types, including those not shown in the Media
Type dialog.
Duration: Filter by clip length.
Size: Filter by the total size of all the files mirrored (Bytes, KBytes, MBytes, GBytes).
Creation Date and Modification Date: Specify a range in which a file was created
or modified. If the creation date and the modification date are today, the Pick up all
newly created clips check box is activated. This is useful when MirrorTool is
running for more than a day. All new clips are picked up while polling as well as in all
event-driven operations.
If the creation date or modification date is before today, all events are ignored even
if the scheduling is event-driven. If a source or target file is modified, it will be filtered
out only when both files do not match the criteria.
NOTE: Files that only exist on the backup server are not filtered when polling.
