Thiswhitepaperdescribesrecommendedcableroutingprocedures,bothwithandwithouttheoptionalCable
ManagementArm(CMA)fortheDell™PowerEdge™R610inthefollowingracks:

IfusingtheoptionalCMA,followingtheseprocedureswillallowyouto
extendthesystemfromtherackforservice
withoutpoweringdownordisconnectingthecables.IfnotusingtheCMA,followingtheseprocedureswillensure
secureattachmentandstrainreliefofthecablesbehindthesystem.Forguidelinesonhowtoroutecableswithin
therack,refertotheDell
WhitePaper“BestPracticesGuideforRackEnclosure.”

FollowtheinstructionscontainedintheRackInstallationGuidefoundintherailkit
toinstalltheserverintothe
rackandtoinstallthecables.AllillustrationsinthefollowingsectionswerecreatedusingaPowerEdgeR610.
NOTE:ThePowerEdgeR610isnotcompatiblewithpreviousgenerationrailsandCMAs.
2.1InstallingtheCablestotheSystem
AttachtheCMAtraytothebackoftherailsasdescribedintheCMAInstallationInstructionsprovidedintheCMA
kit.Pluginallapplicablecablestotherearofthesystemandverifythatallconnectionsaresecure.SeeFigure1.

NOTE:TheCMAcanbeinstalledoneithertherightorleftrearsideoftherails.MountingtheCMAontheside
oppositethepowersupplies(leftsidemount)isrecommended;otherwise,theCMAmustbedisconnectedinorder
toremovetheouterpowersupply.Referto“ReplacingaPower
SupplyonaPowerEdgeR610withCMA”laterin

LeftSideMountingInstructions
1. InstalltheCMAontheleftrearsideoftherailsbyattachingbothCMAhousingstotheattachmentbracketson
therails.SeeFigure3.
2. RoutethecablesthroughtheCMAwhilekeepinganytwistingofthecablestoaminimum.Usethehookand
loopstrapsontheCMAtosecurethe
cables.

3. IfthecablebundleincludesaKVMdongle,placethedongleinsidetheCMAbasket.IftheKVMdonglewillnot
fitinsidethebasketwiththeothercables,attachthedongletotheexteriorofthefrontbasketusingthehook
andloopstraps
ontheCMAbasketasshowninFigure4.

avoid cable strain when CMA is
extended.
NOTE: Do not store excess cable
slack inside the CMA. The cable may
protrude through the CMA causing
binding and potentially damaging the
cable.

4. OnceallthecablesareroutedthroughtheCMA,dressthecablesbetweenthebackofthesystemandthe
entranceoftheCMAwiththetiewrapsprovidedintheCMAkit.Thetiewrapsareshowninyellowinall
illustrations.
5. Clipoff
theexcesslengthofmaterialfromthetiewrapsandmakesurethatthetiewrapsarepositionedto
avoidinterferencewithadjacentsystems.
6. ReturntheCMAtotheclosed(retracted)position.
7. Extendthesystemfromtheracktoverifythereissufficientslackinthecablesatboth
theentranceandexitof
theCMA.

NOTE:TheCMAontheDellPowerEdgeR610isoptional.WithouttheCMAinstalled,thesystemmustbepowered
downandallcablesdisconnectedbeforeitcanberemovedfromtherack.
3.1RoutingtheCables
1. Pluginallapplicablecablestotherearofthesystem,verifyingthatallconnectionsaresecure.
2. Usingthehookandloopstrapssuppliedwiththerailkit,bundlethecablesandsecurethemtoeithertheleft
railorrightrailCMAattachmentbracketsasdescribedinthe
RackInstallationGuide.SeeFigure7foran
exampleofpowercablessecuredtotheleftCMAbracketanddatacablessecuredtotherightCMAbracket.
3. Itisrecommendedthatthecablesbesecuredtotheouterbrackets,butcablesmaybesecuredtotheinner
bracketsif
desired.

3.1 RemovingtheCMABracketsforShallowRacks
Ifyouareinstallingthesystemintoashallowrack(lessthan1mdeep)andyouwillnotbeinstallingaCMA,the
outerCMAbracketsmayberemoved,enablingtherailstofitintotherack.RemovetheouterCMAbracketsby
removingbothscrewswitha#2Philipsscrewdriver
asshowninFigure8.

ReplacingaPowerSupplyonaPowerEdgeR610withCMA
1. RemovethetrayfromundertheCMAasdescribedintheCMAInstallationInstructionsprovidedwiththeCMA
kit.
2. SwingtheCMAintotheserviceposition.
3. Disconnectthepowercordfromthepowersupplyanddisengagethestrainrelief.
4. Removeandreplacethepowersupply
a. If
theCMAisattachedtotheleftside,bothpowersuppliescanberemovedwithoutdisconnecting
theCMA.
b. IftheCMAisattachedtotherightsideandtheinnerpowersupplyneedstobereplaced,theCMA
doesnotneedtobedisconnected.
c. IftheCMAis
attachedtotherightsideandtheouterpowersupplyneedstobereplaced,theinner
CMAattachmenthousingwillneedtobedisconnected.WhilesupportingtheCMAwithonehand,
removeandreplacethepowersupplywiththeotherhandasshowninFigure9.

5. Pluginthepowercord.
6. Reengagethestrainrelief.
7. ReturntheCMAtotheclosed(retracted)position.

intoa2postor4postrack.
2. Verifythatthehookandloopsstrapsprovided
withthestaticrailkitareinstalledtotherearoftherails.
3. Pluginallapplicablecablestotherearofthesystemandverifythatallconnectionsaresecure.
4. Usingthehookandloopstrapssuppliedwiththerailkit,bundlethecablesandsecurethem
toeithertheleft
railorrightrailasdescribedintheRackInstallationGuide.SeeFigure10.
