INSTALLATION AND OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
ADDITIONAL SENSOR CO
with sensor for
Carbon monoxide (CO)
1. GENERAL OVERVIEW
As a standard the ams KOMBIALARM offers the possibility to connect up to two additional
sensors.
The additional sensors are available in different designs:
Additional sensor for liquid gas (propane/butane), natural gas (methane) and KO-gas
(anaesthetic gas)
Additional sensor for carbon monoxide (CO)
The additional sensors can be connected to either one of the two additional inputs
(SENSOR 2 / SENSOR 3) irrespective of the type of sensor used.
2. CARBON MONOXIDE
Carbon monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odourless and extremely toxic gas. It can be found
where gas, oil, wood, coal etc are burned. Toxic amounts of carbon monoxide can develop,
if ovens or cookers are not connected properly or not serviced regularly, if ventilation is
inadequate or if the flue is blocked. Inhaling even small amounts of CO can lead to
permanent damage of cardiovascular and neural functions or can even be fatal.
Symptoms: Tiredness, headaches, dizziness, nausea, chest or stomach pains.
Indications of faulty heating appliances: Stains, soot deposits, yellow/orange coloured
fumes, smell of fumes, the fire goes out easily.
3. PLACEMENT
Carbon monoxide is a little lighter than air and as a result always rises upwards. Therefore,
the additional carbon monoxide sensor should be fitted just under the ceiling and as near as
possible to the potential safety hazard.
4. INSTALLATION
The sensor can be fitted either by gluing or by using the enclosed screws.
Please strictly observe the installation height!
5. ELECTRICAL CONNECTION
The add-on sensor comes complete with a 3-wire cable of about 3 m in length.
The sensor is connected to the main unit at either of the two inputs labelled ‚SENSOR 2’ or
‚SENSOR 3’:
Attention must be paid to connecting the wires to the correct terminals.
If necessary the cable length can be extended by 5 m at the most.
Recommended extension cable: Liyy 3x0.25 mm
2
Do not use a cable with a smaller cross section!
6. STARTING UP
The sensor has no separate ON/OFF switch. It is activated together with the main unit
(main switch in position ‚I’). When switched on, the green LED on the sensor lights up.
After the yellow LED has gone out and the green LED on the main unit is activated, the
add-on sensor is also ready for operation.
The sensitivity is adjusted automatically. The system is designed for continuous operation
and should be activated at all times while you are on holiday.
7. FUNCTION TEST
Unfortunately there is no easy method of testing the add-on CO-sensor, because it is hardly
possible to produce any amount of the toxic carbon monoxide.
However, the additional sensor is responding partly to the alcohol content of ones breath.
The system must respond by sounding the alarm when being breathed upon after the
consumption of a glass of beer, wine, liquor etc. The test can also be carried out by using a
gas lighter or tobacco smoke.
Carry out the function test by following these step-by-step instructions:
Make sure that the entire system is ready-to-run (green LED on the main unit lights up).
Hold a normal gas lighter in front of the sensor and let gas escape without igniting the
flame.
If operating properly the sensor will activate the alarm within a few seconds by lighting up
the red LED of the respective sensor and activating the acoustic warning signal on the main
unit.
The alarm is deactivated as soon as the gas concentration has decreased sufficiently.
8. ALARM
If the concentration of gas exceeds the preset threshold, the unit immediately activates the
alarm by activating the respective red warning light and the siren volume about 85 dB (A) /
3 m. A signal is also transmitted to any other warning devices or appliances that might be
connected.
Immediately open all windows and doors; avoid producing any spark (do not operate any
electrical switches); turn off all oil or gas operated appliances and extinguish open fire;
immediately evacuate everybody from the vehicle.
Immediately determine the cause of the alarm.
Arrange for an expert to examine and repair your appliance.
9. FALSE ALARM
The warning system is intentionally adjusted very sensitively according to its purpose.
Therefore, the sensor of the system also reacts to other gaseous substances. The use of
aerosols (propellant in sprays, etc) but also dense tobacco smoke or evaporating alcohol
can trigger an alarm, even if no carbon monoxide is present.
10. TECHNICAL DATA
Alarm threshold / sensitivity:
Carbon monoxide (CO) ca. 100 ppm
Power consumption: ca. 130 mA
Temperature range: -15°C / +40°C
Case protection: IP 20 DIN 40 050
Dimensions in mm
Subject to changes in construction and design!
11. IMPORTANT ADVICE
The function test must be repeated from time to time, particularly in case of frequent and
also long periods of non-operation. That way the function of the siren and the sensor is
being tested.
Strictly observe the installation height according to the kind of gas being monitored!
If the system is used in vehicles, it must only be activated when the engine is switched off!
Not to be used in the open!
12. WARRANTY
Careful manufacturing, thoroughly inspected materials and a strict final examination
determine the quality of our products. Our warranty period for each product is 24 months
from the day of purchase (date of invoice). The warranty includes the free repair of all faults
due to faulty workmanship, design or materials used.
Further claims of any kind, particularly compensation for injuries to persons or damage to
property not directly concerning the device, are excluded.
No claims for damages are rewarded in case of a fire or an explosion. The warranty does
not cover any damages (property damages or injuries to persons) resulting from a robbery
with an anaesthetic gas being used.
The warranty is valid only if the device is presented with the original invoice.
The manufacturer accepts no liability for damage resulting from improper handling.
