GAS CONVERSION INSTRUCTIONS

WARNING
This conversion kit is to be installed by an Empire Comfort Systems, Inc., distributor (or other
qualied agency¹)* in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and all codes and
requirements of the authority having jurisdiction. Failure to follow instructions could result
in serious injury or property damage. The qualied agency performing this work assumes
responsibility for this conversion.

*The term “qualied agency” means any individual, rm, corporation or company which either
in person or through a representative is engaged in and is responsible for (a) the installation
of gas piping or (b) the connection, installation repair, or servicing of equipment, who is
experienced in such work, familiar with all precautions required, and has complied with all the
requirements of the authority having jurisdiction.
CHECK THE SAFETY SHUTDOWN PERFORMANCE
WARNING
Perform the safety shutdown test any time work is done on a gas system to avoid the possibility
of re or explosion with property damage, personal injury or loss of life.
CHECK SAFETY SHUTDOWN SYSTEM
Continuous Ignition Systems (Standing Pilot)
1. Place gas control knob in PILOT position. Main burner should go off and pilot should remain lit.
2. Extinguishpilotame.Pilotgasowshouldstopwithin30seconds.Safetyshut-offofpilotgasprovescomplete
shutdownsincesafetyshutoffvalveblocksowofgastomainburnerandpilot.
3. Relightpilotburnerandoperatesystemthroughonecompletecycletomakesureallcontrolsoperateproperly.

VERIFYING INPUT RATE OF CONVERTED FIREPLACE
Theinputofthereplacemustbecheckedasfollows:
1. Turnoffallothergasappliances.Clockthegasmeterand
determine the number of seconds required to consume one
cubic foot of gas.
2. 3600÷time(inseconds)=cu.Ft.perhour.
3. Thencu.Ft.perhourxheatingvalueofgas=inputrate
(Btuh).Oninstallationwithoutgasmeters,checkmanifoldfor
proper pressure.
Ifreplaceinsertisnotinstalledorwarrantycardhasnotbeen
returnedtoEmpireComfortSystems,Inc.,checkofftypeofgas
convertedtooncard.Also,indicateconversionbyadding“Conv.”
behindtypeofgas.

ThedirectventgasreplaceinsertwhenconvertedtoPropane
Gaswillhaveamanifoldpressureapproximately10.0"w.c.
(2.49kPa)atthevalveoutletwiththeinletpressuretothevalve
fromaminimumof10.8"w.c.(2.68kPa)forthepurposeofinput
adjustmenttoamaximumof14.0"w.c.(3.48kPa).
INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONVERSION
1. Ifthereplaceinsertisinstalled,turnOFFgasandelectric
supplytoreplacebeforemakinggasconversion.
2. Removebarrierscreen.Refertoinstructionsprovidedwith
thereplaceforremovalinformation.
3. Releasetwoglassframespringclampsatbottomofrebox.
4. Removeglassframeassembly.
5. Removelogsfromburnerassembly.
6. Removetwo10x1/2"screwsfromrearlogsupport.Remove
log support.
7. Removefour(4)10x1/2"screwsfromburner/gratebase
andone8x1/4"screwfromairshutter.Graspburner/
gratebaseassembly,liftandpullforwardtoremoveburner
assembly.Useascrewdrivertogentlyseparatetheair
shutterfromtheburnerventuritubeatrearofburner.
8. Removeairshutterfromoricetting.Usea3/8"and1/2"
wrenchtoremoveburnerorice.
9. RemoveNaturalGasmainburneroricefromoricetting.
10. InstallPropaneGasmainburneroriceintooricetting:

11. Threadairshutterontooricetting.
12. Pullupwardonpilothoodtoremoveandgainaccesstopilot
injectororice.
13. RemoveNaturalGaspilotinjectororicefrompilotburner
with5/32"hex(Allen)wrench.
14. InsertAppropriate Propane Gas pilot injector orice into
pilotburnerusingthe5/32"hexwrench.
15. Re-installpilothoodtopilotassembly.Pushdownwardto
snap in place.
16. ConvertthegasvalveasinstructedinS.I.T. Propane Gas
Valve Conversion Kit.
17. Alignburnerassembly/gratebasewiththeairshutterasyou
placeburnerassemblyintotheoriginalpositioninrebox.
18. Adjustairshuttersettingto1/2" Open on all models.
19. Attachairshuttertoburnerassemblywithone8x1/4"screw
fromStep7.
20. Attachburnerassembly/gratebasetoreboxbottomwith
four10x1/2"screwsfromStep7.
21. Attachrearlogsupportwith10x1/2"screwsfromStep6.
22. Theconvertedreplacemustbeconnectedtoasupplyof
theconversiongasandcheckedforleaksatallconnections.

fermeturedesécuritédugazàlaveilleusepermetunarrêtcompletpuisquelavanned’arrêtdesécuritébloquele
débitdegazaubrûleurprincipaletàlaveilleuse.
3. Rallumerlebrûleurdelaveilleuseetfairefonctionnerlesystèmependantuncyclecompletpours’assurerquetous
les contrôles fonctionnent correctement.
