WEEE
The information below is issued in compliance with the regulations set out in the 2002/96/EC directive,
subsequently superseded by 2003/108/EC. It refers electrical and electronic equipment and the waste
management of such products.
When disposing of a device, including all of its components, subassemblies and materials that are an integral part
of the product, you should consider the WEEE directive.
The symbol to the right has been attached to the equipment or, if this has not been
possible, on the packaging, instruction literature and/or the guarantee sheet. By using this
symbol, it states that the device has been marketed after August 13th 2005, and implies
that you must separate all of its components when possible, and dispose of them in

Product overview
SekuFACE is the ETH Security facial recognition system. A facial recognition system is a computer application
for automatically identifying or verifying a person from a digital image.
The identification process is done by comparing the facial features extracted from an image with the biometrics
previously stored in a facial database.
In Fig 1. the SekuFACE facial recognition system is shown.
Figure 1. SekuFACE
SekuFACE is a collaborative access control system:
It should be noted that SekuFACE is a collaborative access control system. This means that people should
do their best in order to be recognized by the system.

General Architecture
As shown in Figure 2 the general architecture of the system is composed by a series of gate devices connected
through a network to a central server. A gate device or totem is the aggregation of a panel pc, a digital camera
and an infrared illuminator. Its function is to control the access to a security building by comparing the facial
features of people in front of the totem with a database of registered users. Every totem must be placed on a
entry (totem in) or exit (totem out) passage and by querying a central server can grant or deny the access to the
building. The central server maintains a database of registered users and it is responsible to compare the faces
coming from the gates with the ones saved in its database.
Figure 2. General architecture of the system
On each gate device that makes up the network runs a software that expose two interfaces. The first, called
totem's user interface, is the user interface that is visible to all the people that need to be authenticated by the
system. Its interface is shown on the monitor of every panel pc and its purpose is to guide the user through the
steps of the recognition process. A screen shot of that UI is visible in Figure 3.

Figure 3. Totem's User Interface
The second interface, called totem's web interface, is designed for system administrator and its main function is
to configure and setup a totem. This interface is reachable with any modern browsers and is protected by a login
form, in this way only authenticated user can configure a totem. An example of that interface is visible in Figure 4.
Figure 4. Totem's Web Interface
Product overview SekuFACE Installation Manual
12
Seku-FACE_InstMan_En_1.0
Similarly to the totems also on the server runs a software with two interfaces. One, invisible to the users, is
exposed to the totems and its purpose is to manage the communication between totems and the central server.
The other (Figure 5) is a web interface called server's web interface. Its purpose is to let system administrators to
monitor the system. This interface show all the transits of the registered users, allow the user management and
the filtering of transits and registered users based on many fields and kind of search (by photo, by anagraphical
and temporal data, etc.).

Compact Architecture
In addition to the general architectural configuration exposed before there is a compact configuration suitable for
small system installations. This compact configuration eliminate the physical separated server and moves its
functionality and interface on one of the totems (see Figure 6).
Figure 6. Compact Architecture
Moreover it is also possible to reduce the entire system to only one totem that incorporate all the features
described above (Figure 7). The web interface of the totem that incorporate the server functionality appears as in
Figure 8, with the server and client menu merged.

Quick start
Following are reported the steps for a quick setup of the face recognition system.
1. Configure the central server network settings as described in chapter Errore. L'origine riferimento non è
stata trovata. (you can skip this step if you have a compact architecture without a separated central server).
2. For each totem that makes up your system architecture perform the following steps:
o If you have the single parts that comprise the totem not already assembled follows the chapter
Assembly of OEM components in a totem structure (Optional).
o Configure the totem network settings as described in chapter Errore. L'origine riferimento non è
stata trovata..
o Setup the totem following the instructions of the chapter Errore. L'origine riferimento non è stata
trovata..
o Report, in the totem device settings, the central server IP and port (see paragraph Server Name and
Port).
o Assign a unique ID to the totem and sets the type of gate (see paragraph Gate Options).
o Switch the totem to operation mode and reboot it (see Enter and Exit the Totem's Setup Mode).
3. Choose a totem and at the moment set it to register new users (see One Time Enroll).
4. Try each totem by performing some transits to see that everything works (see chapter Flowchart of the
Totem's Operation).
5. Connect to the server's web interface and check that all works as expected (see chapter Server Web
Interface).
NOTE:
The access to the management interface requires a Web Browser. We recommend Mozilla Firefox 3.6
(or higher) or Internet Explorer 8. To access the web interface of a device it is sufficient to point your
browser to the IP address of the device. For more details consult the chapter Errore. L'origine
iferimento non è stata trovata..

Assembly of OEM components in a totem structure
(Optional)
This chapter is optional, it is useful only if you have the single parts that compose the totem not already
assembled and inserted in a totem chassis. If this is not your case you can skip this chapter.
The parts that made up a totem comprise an infrared illuminator, a camera, a panel pc, a 12V power supplier and
the necessary cabling.
Positioning
The Figure 9 show the best placement for the individual parts.
Figure 9. Best placement of single parts

Placing the camera at an height of 160 cm you can frame the face of people with a height ranging from 1,60
meters to 2,00 meters if the person is at least one meter from the camera.
Positioning of the camera:
Please pay attention in the positioning of the camera. It should be mounted rotated by 90 degree
counter-clockwise looking at the camera, or equivalently 90 degree clockwise looking at the back of
the camera. To be sure refer to Figure 10 that shows the camera viewed from behind.

For more information on assembling the individual parts look in their respective manuals that are provided with
this guide.
