General Practices

1. Read,understand,andfollowall instructionson themachineand

in themanual(s)beforeattemptingtoassembleandoperate.Keep

2. Befamiliarwithall controlsandproperoperation.Knowhowto stop

10.Leakscanbedetectedbypassingcardboardor wood,while

wearingprotectiveglovesandsafetyglasses,overthesuspected

area.Lookfordiscolorationofcardboardorwood.

11.If injuredbyescapingfluid,seea doctorimmediately.Serious

infectionor reactioncandevelopif propermedicaltreatmentisnot

administeredimmediately.

12.Keeptheoperatorzoneandadjacentareaclearforsafe,secure

footing.

13.If yourmachineisequippedwithaninternalcombustionengine

and itisintendedforusenearanyunimprovedforest,brush,or

grasscoveredland,theengineexhaustshouldbeequippedwitha

sparkarrester.Makesureyoucomplywithapplicablelocal,state,

andfederalcodes.Takeappropriatefirefightingequipmentwith

foranyotherpurpose.

Preparation

1. Alwayswearsafetyshoesor heavyboots.

2. Alwayswearsafetyglassesor safetygogglesduringoperatingthis

machine.

3. Neverwearjewelryor looseclothingthatmightbecomeentangled

in movingor rotatingpartsofthemachine.

4. Makesuremachineisonlevelsurfacebeforeoperating.

5. Alwaysblockmachinetopreventunintendedmovement,and lock

in eitherhorizontalor verticalposition.

7. Logsshouldbe cutwithsquareendspriortosplitting.

8. Uselogsplitterindaylightor undergoodartificiallight.

9. Toavoidpersonalinjuryor propertydamageuseextremecarein

handlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremelyflammableandthevapors

areexplosive.Seriouspersonalinjurycanoccurwhengasolineis

spilledon yourselfor yourclotheswhichcanignite.Washyourskin

andchangeimmediately.

b. Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipes,andothersourcesofignition.

c. Neverfuelmachineindoors.

d. Neverremovegascaporaddfuelwhiletheengineishotorrunning.

e. Allowenginetocoolatleasttwominutesbeforerefueling.

f. Neveroverfillthefueltank.Filltanktonomorethan1/2inchbelow

bottomoffillernecktoprovidespaceforfuelexpansion.

g. Replacegasolinecapandtightensecurely.

h. Ifgasolineisspilled,wipeitofftheengineandequipment,move

machinetoanotherarea.Wait5minutesbeforestartingtheengine.

i. Neverstorethemachineorfuelcontainerinsidewherethereisanopen

flame,sparkorpilotlightasonawaterheater,spaceheater,furnace,

clothesdryerorothergasappliances.

j. Allowmachinetocool5 minutesbeforestoring.

Operation

1. Beforestartingthis machine,reviewthe"SafetyInstructions".

Failuretofollowtheserulesmayresultinseriousinjurytothe

operatororbystanders.

2. Neverleavethismachineunattendedwiththeenginerunning.

3. Donotoperatemachinewhileundertheinfluenceofalcohol,drugs,

or medication.

4. Neverallowanyonetooperatethis machinewithoutproperinstruc-

tion.

5. Alwaysoperatethismachinewithallsafetyequipmentinplace

andworking.Makesureall controlsare properlyadjustedforsafe

operation.

6. Donotchangetheenginegovernorsettingsoroverspeedthe

engine.Thegovernorcontrolsthemaximumsafeoperatingspeed

oftheengine.

7. Whenloadinga log,alwaysplaceyourhandson thesidesofthe

log,noton theends,andneveruseyourfootto helpstabilizea log.

Failuretodo so,mayresultin crushedoramputatedfingers,toes,

hand,orfoot.

8. Useonlyyourhandtooperatethecontrols.

9. Neverattempttosplitmorethanone logata timeunlesstheram

hasfullyextendedanda secondlogis neededtocompletethe

separationofthefirst log.

10.Forlogswhichare notcut square,theleastsquareendandthe

longestportionofthelogshouldbeplacedtowardthebeamand

wedge,andthesquareendplacedtowardtheend plate.

11.Whensplittingintheverticalposition,stabilizethelogbefore

movingthecontrol.Splitasfollows:

a. Placelogontheendplateandturnuntilitleansagainstthebeamand

isstable.

b. Whensplittingextralargeorunevenlogs,thelogmustbestabilized

withwoodenshimsorsplitwoodbetweenthelogandendplateor

ground.

12.Alwayskeepfingersawayfromanycracksthat openinthelog

whilesplitting.Theycanquicklycloseand pinchoramputateyour

fingers.

13.Keepyourworkareaclean.Immediatelyremovesplitwoodaround

themachinesoyoudonotstumbleoverit.

14.Nevermovethismachinewhiletheengineisrunning.

15.Thismachineshouldnotbetowedonanystreet,highwayor public

roadwithoutcheckingtheexistingfederal,state,or localvehicle

requirements.Anylicensingor modificationssuchastaillights,etc.,

neededtocomply,isthesoleresponsibilityofthepurchaser.If a

"StatementofOrigin"isrequiredin yourstate,seeyourlocaldealer.

16.Donottowmachinefasterthan45mph.

17.SeeTransportingtheLogSplittersectioninthismanualfor proper

towinginstructionsonceallfederal,local,or staterequirementsare

met.

Maintenance and Storage

1. Stoptheengine,disconnectthespark plugandgrounditagainst

theenginebeforecleaning,or inspectingthemachine.

2. Stoptheengineandrelievehydraulicsystempressurebefore

repairingoradjustingfittings,hoses,tubing,or othersystem

components.

3. Topreventfires,cleandebrisandchafffromtheengineandmuffler

areas.Iftheengineisequippedwitha sparkarrestermuffler,clean

and inspectit regularlyaccordingtomanufacturersinstructions.

Replaceifdamaged.

4. Periodicallycheckthatall nutsandbolts,hoseclamps,and

hydraulicfittingsaretighttobe sureequipmentisin safeworking

condition.

5. Checkall safetyguardsandshieldstobesuretheyare inthe

properposition.Neveroperatewithsafetyguards,shields,orother

protectivefeaturesremoved.

6. Thepressurereliefvalveispresetatthefactory.Donotadjustthe

valve.

7. Neverattempttomovethis machineoverhillyor uneventerrain

withouta towvehicleoradequatehelp.

8. Foryoursafety,replacealldamagedorwornpartsimmediately

withoriginalequipmentmanufacturer's(O.E.M.)partsonly."Useof

partswhichdo notmeettheoriginalequipmentspecificationsmay

leadtoimproperperformanceandcompromisesafety!"

9. Donotalterthis machinein anymanner,alterationssuchasattach-

inga ropeor extensiontothecontrolhandle,oraddingtothewidth

or heightofthewedgemayresultinpersonalinjury.

Removing Unit From Carton

1. Prythetop,sides,andendsoff crate.

2. Setpanelsasidetoavoidtirepuncturesor personalinjury.

3. Removeanddiscardplasticbagthatcoversunit.

4. Removeanyloosepartsifincludedwithunit(i.e.,operator's

manual,etc.)

5. Cutand removestrapswhichsecurepartstobottomofcrate.

Unboltanyremainingpartswhichmaybeboltedtothebottomof

Connecting Cylinder to Beam

Thelogsplitterisshippedwiththebeamintheverticalposition.

1. Pullouttheverticalbeamlock,rotateit back,andpivotthebeamto

thehorizontalpositionuntilitlocks.SeeFigure3-3.

2. Disconnectthedislodgerfromthebeamweldbracketbyremoving

thesixhexscrews.SeeFigure3-4.

3. Disconnectthelogcradlefromthebeamonthesideofthecontrol

valve.SeeFigure3-5.

4. Liftandslidethecylinderuptothetopofbeamand intotheweld

brackets.

5. Attachthedislodgeroverthewedgeassemblyandsecurewith

hardware,previouslyremoved,totheweldbrackets.

NOTE:Oncethesixhexscrewsaretightened,theremaybea slight

gapbetweenthedislodgerandtheweldbrackets.Thisgapis normal.

6. Reattachthelogcradletothesideofthebeamwiththecontrol

valve,aligningtheendsofthecradlewiththebeamflanges.

7. Rolllogsplitteroffthebottomcrate.

Preparing the Log Splitter

1. Lubricatethebeamarea(wherethesplittingwedgewillslide)with

engineoil;do notusegrease.

2. Removeventedreservoirdipstick,whichislocatedin frontofthe

engineontopofthereservoirtank.SeeFigure3-6.

IMPORTANT:Thelogsplittermayhavebeenshippedand primed

withhydraulicfluidinthereservoirtank. However,youMUSTcheck

thefluidlevelbeforeoperating.If not filled, proceedwiththefollowing

steps:

3. Fillthe reservoirtankwithhydraulicfluidincludedwiththisunit(if

equipped)or approvedfluidswhichincludeDexron®III/ Mercon®

Ill automatictransmissionfluid,a 10WeightAWhydraulicoil or

Pro-MixTM AW-32HydraulicOil.

4. Checkfluidlevelusingthedipstick.SeeFigure3-6.Donotoverfill.

5. Replaceventeddipsticksecurely,tighteningituntilthetopofthe

threadsare flushwithtopofthepipe.

6. Disconnectthesparkplugand primethepumpbypullingtherecoil

starterasfaras itwillgo.Repeatapproximately10times.

7. Reconnectthesparkplugwireandstartenginefollowinginstruc-

tionsintheOPERATIONsection.

8. Usecontrolhandletoengagethewedgeto thefarthestextended

position.Thenretractthewedge.

9. Refilltankasspecifiedon thedipstick.

NOTE:Failuretorefillthetankwillvoidunit'swarranty.

10.Extendandretractthewedge12completecyclesto remove

trappedair inthesystem(thesystemis "self-bleeding").

11.Refillreservoirwithinrangemarkedon thedipstick.

_ ARNING:Much of the original fluid hasbeen

drawnintothe cylinderandhoses.Makecertain

to refillthe reservoirto preventdamageto the

hydraulicpump.

NOTE:Somefluidmayoverflowfromtheventplugasthesystem

buildsheatandthefluidexpandsandseeksa balancedlevel.

Thesetwo locks,astheirnamesuggests,are usedto securethebeam

inthehorizontalortheverticalposition.Theverticalbeamlockis

locatednexttotheoil filter.Thehorizontalbeamlockislocatedon the

Gas and Oil Fill-Up

IMPORTANT:Yourlogsplittermaybeshippedwithmotoroil inthe

engine.YouMUSTchecktheoil levelbeforeoperating.Becarefulnot

tooverfill.

_ WARNING:Useextremecarewhen handling

gasoline.Gasolineisextremelyflammableand the

vaporsareexplosive.Neverfuel machine indoorsor

whilethe engineishotor running.

Oil

1. Removeoilfilldipstick.

2. Checktheoil levelmakingcertainnottorubthedipstickalongthe

insidewallsoftheoil filltube.Thiswouldresultin afalsedipstick

reading.RefilltoFULLmarkondipstick,ifnecessary.Replace

dipstickandtighten.

3. If necessary,withthelogsplitteronlevelground,usea funneltofill

enginewithoil toFULLmarkondipstick.Becarefulnottooverfill.

Overfillingwillcausetheenginetosmokeprofuselyandwill result

in poorengineperformance.

4. Checkoil levelthreetimespriortostartingenginetobecertain

you'vegottenanaccuratedipstickreading.Runningtheenginewith

toolittleoil canresultin permanentenginedamage.

Gasoline

1. Removefuelcapfromthefueltank.

2. Makesurethecontainerfromwhichyouwillpourthegasolineis

cleanandfreefromrustorforeignparticles.Neverusegasoline

that maybestalefromlongperiodsof storagein itscontainer.

Gasolinethat hasbeensittingforanyperiodlongerthanfourweeks

shouldbeconsideredstale.

3. Fillfueltankwithabout1.5quartsof clean,fresh,lead-freegrade

automotivegasoline.DONOTuseEthlyorhighoctanegasoline.

NOTE:Gasolinecanbeaddedto theenginewhenthe logsplitteris

ineitherthehorizontalorverticalposition.However,thereareless

obstructionswhenthe unitisin theverticalposition.

NOTE:Donotusegasolinecontainingmethanol.Gasolinecontaining

uptoabout10%ethanolor upto 15%methyltertiarybutylether

(MTBE)maybe used,butwillrequirespecialcarewhenengineis left

unusedforextendedperiod.

4. Replacefuelcap.

NOTE:Toavoidengineproblems,thefuelsystemshouldbe emptied

beforestoragefor30 daysorlonger.Drainthegastank,startthe

engineand letitrununtilthefuellinesandcarburetorareempty.Use

freshfuelnextseason.SeeSTORAGEsectionforadditionalinforma-

tion.

1. PushstopswitchtoOFF.

2. Disconnectsparkplugwireandgroundagainsttheengineto

preventunintendedstarting.

Starting Engine

areabetweentheengineand thepump.Ifthecouplerfailscompletely,
