leak, keep out of all low areas.

 •Useyourneighbor’sphoneandcallyourfuelgas

supplier and your fire department. Do not re-enter the

building or area.

 •Stayoutofthebuildingandawayfromtheareauntil

declared safe by the firefighters and your fuel gas

supplier.

 •FINALLY,letthefuelgasservicepersonandthe

firefighters check for escaped gas. Have them air out

the building and area before you return. Properly trained

service people must repair any leaks, check for further

leakages, and then relight the appliance for you.



smell the odor of the man-made chemical added to

propane(LP)ornaturalgas.Youmustdetermineifyou

can smell the odorant in these fuel gases.

than happy to give you a scratch and sniff pamphlet.

Use it to become familiar with the fuel gas odor.

 •Smokingcandecreaseyourabilitytosmell.Being

around an odor for a period of time can affect your

sensitivity to that particular odor. Odors present in

animal confinement buildings can mask fuel gas odor.

•

treat it as a serious leak. Immediately go into action as

• Aperiodicsnifftestaroundtheheaterorattheheater’s

joints;i.e.hose,connections,etc.,isagoodsafety

practice under any conditions. If you smell even a small

amountofgas,CONTACTYOURFUELGASSUPPLIER

IMMEDIATELY.DONOTWAIT!



• This heater is safe for indoor use in small recreational

enclosures having means for providing combustion air

and ventilation, such as enclosed porches, cabins, fishing

huts, trailers, tent trailers, tents, truck caps and vans.

It may be used for emergency indoor heating when

connected to a disposable 1 lb. propane cylinder and

for indoor use in commercial enclosures, having means

for providing combustion air and ventilation, such as

construction trailers or temporary work enclosures.

Theheatercanbeusedoutdoors,butmayexperence

nuisance shutoffs due to certain wind conditions.

• Whentheheateriscoldoratroomtemperature,itwill

take a few minutes for the burner tile to turn bright or-

ange. This is normal and the heater is working properly.

If burner tile is visibly flaming, turn heater off and call a

qualifiedservicetechnician.

• Whentheunitislit,thereshouldbeaboutaquarter

inch border around the tile that will not turn bright

orange. This is normal.

• Whenoperatingtheheaterforthefirsttime,thetop

area of the reflector may discolor. This is also normal

and is no reason for concern.

• Theprotectivegrillonthefrontofthisheateriscoated

withaspecialhigh-temperatureresistantpaint.When

the heater is used for the first time, the grill may give

off noticeable smoke or fumes. This is normal and will

notoccurduringsubsequentuses.Thefumesarenot

harmful.

• Whenoperatingtheheaterataltitudesover7,000FT.

above sea level, the unit may not burn as bright as in

lower altitudes. This is normal. At higher altitudes, the

heater may shut off. If this happens, provide fresh air,

wait 5 minutes and re-light. Due to local atmospheric

conditions heater may not re-light.

• Operating time will vary depending on the heater set-

ting and the supply cylinder size. Up to 3 to 6 hours

on a 1 lb. cylinder. Up to 48 to 110 hours on a 20 lb.

cylinder(basedon“HI”and“LO”settings).

• Whenmovingheaterwhenlitorbumpingheatersetting

it down, the tip over switch may shut off heater. If this

happens, re-light.

• Due to natural operation of small tanks, condensation

may build up on tank and drip on surface under heater.







Always inspect propane cylinder and heater

propane connections for damage, dirt, and debris before

attaching propane cylinder. Do not use if head of cylinder is

Knobclockwiseto“OFF”position.

 After turning heater off, wire guard will

remain hot. Allow to thoroughly cool before storing.

• Do not operate, store or remove cylinder near flam-

mable items or ignition sources.

This Heater may be used in a recreational enclosure or

temporary construction work enclosure with a remote

refillablepropanecylinderONLYwhenthecylinderis

located outdoors and the Heater is used with Mr. Heater

Hose No. F273701, F273702 or F272702 and fuel filter

F273699. Fuel filter must be replaced annually. Or use

F273704Buddyserieshose.Fuelfilternotrequired.

 NEVERbringarefillablepropanecylinder

indoors.Afireorexplosioncanoccurcausingproperty

damage,seriousinjuryordeath!

• Inspect the hose before each use of the heater. If there

isexcessiveabrasionorwear,orthehoseiscut,replace

prior to using the heater with one of the Mr. Heater

HoseNo’s.shownabove.

• The propane cylinder must include a listed overfilling

protection device as well as a collar to protect the cylin-

der valve.

• Heater must be in an upright position during operation.

• Makesurefour-positionControlKnobisin“OFF”posi-

tion;seeFigure1,atleft.

• Swivel regulator outward for easy hose installation.

Then screw hose connector into regulator on heater and

screw connector on other end of hose into LP-gas sup-

ply cylinder valve. Tighten all hose connections.

• Mr.Heaterstronglyrecommendsusingdisposablefuel

filter F273699 to trap any oil substances when connect-

ed to a remote cylinder that can make heater inoper-

able.

• Open valve at LP-gas supply cylinder.

• Check all hose connections for leaks with soapy water at

the threaded connection under the domed plastic cover

where the hose connector screws into the regulator and

atLP-gassupplycylinder.SEEWARNING!ONPLASTIC

DOMEDCOVER.

• TurnControlKnobcounterclockwiseto“PILOT”position

anddepresstolight;seeFigure3.

• Ifheaterdoesnotlight,holddownforapproximately30

seconds;releaseanddepressagain.Repeatuntilpilot

lights.

• After pilot lights, hold down for 30 -60 seconds and

thenreleaseknob.Knobshouldreturntofullyextended

position;seeFigure4.Tooperateheaterslightlydepress

knobandgentlyturntolockinthe“HI”positiontolight

burnertile.Leaveon“HI”positionuntilburnertileturns

• After burner tile has turned bright orange, adjust heat

(“LO”or“HI”setting)

 Do not try to adjust heating levels by using

the propane tank shut off valve.



LP-gas supply cylinder. As stated before allow heater

to use up propane in supply line until heater shuts off.

WhentheLP-gassupplycylinderisnotdisconnected

from the heater, the heater and the cylinder must be

stored outdoors, in a well ventilated space, out of reach

of children, and must not be stored in a building, garage

or any other enclosed area.

• Indoor storage of the heater is permissible only if the

cylinder is disconnected and removed from the heater.

Cylinders must be stored outdoors out of the reach of

children and must not be stored in a building, garage or

any other enclosed area.

Control Knob

Fan Switch

• For added heat circulation turn red fan switch to on. The

fan switch is located just left of control knob side handle

support. See Figure 6.

• Installationof4D-cellbatteries(notincluded)isrequired

forfanoperation.Batteryboxislocatedonlowerback

panel of heater. Follow instructions on battery cover for

correct battery installation.

• Heater can also be powered by electrical adapter

F276127.Requiredadaptertobe6voltDCupto800

milliamp current with positive tip polarity. The adapter

receptical is located in the center of the battery cover

1/2”belowthewtopofthecover.

Storage Compartment

The MH12B has two storage compartments, with

access doors, on the left side of the heater. The forward

compartment(Ref.A)canbeusedtostorethe6Vpower

adapterand/orsparefuelfilter(neitherincluded).

Always keep the heater area clear and free from combus-

tible materials, gasoline and other flammable vapors and

liquids.

Visuallyinspectthe

pilot flame and

burner periodically

during use. The

pilot flame should

be blue in color

(notyellow)andwill

extendbeyondthethermocouple.Theflamewillsurround

the thermocouple just below the tip, see Figure 8.

A slight yellow flame may occur where the pilot flame

and main burner flame meet. The burner should be bright

orange (with a slight blue color around the border, a red-

orangehazethatisvisibleontheceramictileisacceptable)

and without a noticeable flame. A blue flame that rolls out

at the top of the ceramic tile indicates an accumulation of

dust, lint or spider webs inside the casing assembly and

main burner assembly. If the pilot is yellow or the burner

hasanoticeableflame,cleaningmayberequired.Usethe

following procedure to inspect the casing assembly and

main burner assembly.

It is necessary to periodically check the burner orifice and

burner venturi tube to make sure they are clear of insects/

nests or spider webs that may accumulate over time. A

clogged tube can lead to a fire.

1 Allow heater to thoroughly cool before performing any

maintenance.

2 Remove disposable 1 lb. cylinder from heater or turn

OFF gas supply at remote cylinder valve, and disconnect

hose from heater.

3 Remove(4)fourscrewsthatsecuretherearcovertothe

Heater.

4 Pivot cover outward from bottom. Release from 2 top

clips. Set aside.

5 Remove(4)fourburnerretainingscrewsandfuelline

from burner assembly. Remove burner assembly from

back of housing.

6 Inspect interior of casing assembly for accumulation

of dust, lint or spider webs. If necessary, clean interior

of casing assembly with a vacuum cleaner or apply air

pressure. Do not damage any components within casing

assembly when you are cleaning.

7 Inspect and clean main burner orifice (threaded into

orificeholder).Orificeholderisattachedtotheburner

assemblyventuriwith(2)twoscrews.

8 Inspectandcleanpilot(mountedtobracket)byusinga

The rear compartment (Ref B) can be used to store a spare 1# pro-

pane tank (not included)



vacuum or apply air pressure through the holes in the

pilot indicated by the arrows in Figure 5.

 Never use needles, wires, or similar cylin-

drical objects to clean the pilot to avoid damaging the

calibrated orifice that controls the gas flow.

9 Applyairpressure(max.30psi.)intoceramictileof

burnerassemblyandtheventuritube(ref.item#16)to

remove dust, lint or spider webs.

10 Reassemble main burner orifice holder onto the burner

assembly.

11 Reinstall burner assembly into the heater housing

12 Reinstall fuel line and check for leaks.

13 Install heater back cover.

14StoreinBuddyBag#32102(included)tohelpprevent

dust, insects and other contaminants from clogging the

pilot.



If Spark electrode does not produce spark.

CHECK

•Sparkelectrodebroken–replaceODS(OxygenDepletion

Sensor).

•Igniterwiremaynotbeattachedtosparkelectrode,

ground wire may not be attached to frame - attach.

•Igniterwiredamaged–replace.

•Piezoigniterdefective--replacecontrolvalve

If Spark electrode produces spark but pilot does not light.

CHECK

•Nogastoheater–installdisposablecylinderorconnect

hose and turn on valve at remote cylinder.

•“PILOT”positionnotproperlyaligned–turngascontrol

knobto“PILOT”positionanddepress.

•Pilotisblockedfromspiderwebordirt–cleanpilot,see

MAINTENANCE.

If Pilot flame does not stay lit when knob is released.

CHECK

•Controlknobin“PILOT”positionnotcompletely

depressed or held in long enough to purge air from lines.

•Pilotflamenotsurroundingthermocouple–cleanpilot,

see MAINTENANCE.

•PilotAssemblydefective–replace.

•Tipswitchwiresdisconnected–connect.

If Main burner does not ignite.

CHECK

•Mainburnerorificeisblocked–cleanburner,see

MAINTENANCE.

If Heater keeps shutting “OFF” during normal operation.

CHECK

•Pilotisblocked–cleanpilot,seeMAINTENANCE.

•Provideminimumfreshairopeningof9squareinches

(example3”x3”opening).

•Tipoverswitchactivatedfrombumpingheater.Re-light
