that the Network
Port of the
Computer Is Set
to DHCP
If your computer does not connect to the StepOne instrument, you must check that
the network port on the computer is set to DHCP (to automatically obtain the IP
address).
To check the status of your computer network port:
1. Disconnect your computer from the StepOne instrument and the Local Area
Network.
2. Unplug all of the Ethernet cables from the computer.
3. From the desktop, select StartControl Panel.

4. In the Control Panel window, double-click Network Connection.

5. In the Network Connections window, double-click the appropriate network port.

6. In the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, select Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP), then click Properties.

7. In the General tab of the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box, select
Obtain an IP Address automatically.

8. Select the Alternate Configuration tab, select Automatic private IP address,
then click OK.

9. From the Local Area Connection Properties, click Close.
10. Connect your computer to the StepOne instrument:
a. Connect the yellow Ethernet cable to the yellow Ethernet port on the
StepOne instrument.
b. Connect the other end of the yellow Ethernet cable to the integrated
Ethernet port on the computer, the same Ethernet port that corresponds to
the Local Area Network connection configured in steps 5 through step 9.
11. Power on the StepOne instrument. Wait for the main menu to appear.

12. In the computer desktop, select StartControl PanelNetwork
Connections.
13. In the Network Connections window, double-click the same network port as in
step 5 on page 2.
14. In the My Local Area Connection Status dialog box, select Support tab, then
verify that the:
a. Address type is Assigned by DHCP.
b. StepOne instrument has sent an IP address to the computer.
c. IP address begins with 192.168.0

How to Check
that the
StepOne
Instrument
Communicates
with the
Computer
You can now verify the connection between the computer and the StepOne
instrument by “pinging” the StepOne instrument.
To ping the StepOne instrument:
1. From the computer desktop, select StartRun to open the DOS window.
2. Enter cmd in the command line, then click OK.
3. After the DOS window opens, wait 15 sec.
4. At the DOS prompt, enter ping 192.168.0.1,then wait for the response.

The following screen is displayed if the computer is communicating with the
StepOne instrument.
If there is no communication, take a screen capture of the screen on step 14 on
page 5, then send it to your Applied Biosystems contact.
