GOLDMUND MIMESIS PH2
PHONO PREAMPLIFIER
USER MANUAL
WARNING !
No connection or manipulation must be done before reading these instructions. Damage to
the preamplifier may result if the following instructions are not consciously understood and
applied.
1 - UNPACKING
You will find in the GOLDMUND MIMESIS PH2 box :
- The preamplifier.
- The power cord.
- This manual.
- Accessories and spare fuses.
Please keep the packaging in case you need to transport the preamplifier at a later date or
if you have to send it for maintenance.
2 - CHOICE OF PHONO PREAMPLIFIER LOCATION
The GOLDMUND MIMESIS PH2 preamplifier does not generate a significant amount of
heat.
It is necessary to allow a proper cooling of the heat sinks. However, the performance of the
phono preamplifier being direcly related to its thermal stability, avoid any location which is
too ventilated and avoid to put it on top of any equipment generating heat.
It is also a safe precaution to avoid direct proximity of any power amplifier, since the field
generated by some units can be detrimental for the MIMESIS PH2 performance.
3 - LINE VOLTAGE
A voltage indication is provided on the serial number plate of the unit. Check if this is
appropriate for your AC line voltage.
ATTENTION
: With a 220V setting, the MIMESIS PH2 phono preamplifier will function
properly for AC line voltage between 200V and 250V. On the 110V position, the AC mains
must deliver between 95V and 125V. If your AC mains is usually out of these tolerances,
please consult your GOLDMUND dealer.
Please check the value of the AC line fuse. This fuse is located on the power cord
receptacle. The lid can be removed with a small screwdriver when the cord is removed.
Use a .5A slow-blow fuse for 220V and a 1A slow-blow fuse for 110V.
4 - CONNECTIONS
Connect the power cord to the back of the unit and plug it into the nearest wall plug. Use a
3 lugs grounded plug for safety. To get the best sound of the phono preamplifier, avoid any
multiple plugs or an extension cord.
Connect the input interconnects between the phono preamplifier and the turntable.
Select the inputs marked MC-L and MC-R if you are using a moving-coil cartridge.
Use the inputs marked MM-L and MM-R to connect a moving-magnet cartridge.
Both inputs can be connected simultaneously, at least if no hum is generated. In that case,
the front panel selecting the inputs acts a source selector between the two cartridges or
tonearms.
Plug the output interconnects from the RCA female sockets noted output to the
preamplifier.
5 - CONTROLS AND UTILIZATION
- POWER ON
The GOLDMUND MIMESIS PH2 phono preamplifier has no power switch. It is powered ON
as soon as the power cord is connected to the wall plug. It must remain connected all the
time.
When powered on first, the preamp will become operative only after around two minutes of
warm up, to insure proper stabilization of all the circuitry and avoid any unwanted noises.
After this delay, the output of the preamplifier is connected to the output connectors.
If the power cord is accidentally disconnected, a special safety circuit switches the preamp
to muting, to avoid any disturbance to reach the power amplifier and the speakers, even in
case of a power failure in the building.
- INPUT MM/MC SELECTOR
This front panel switch controls which input is used from the Moving Magnet and the
Moving coil outputs.
- GAIN
Level adjustment acting simultaneously on both channels for both the moving coil and the
moving magnet sources.
- BACK PANEL IMPEDANCE SWITCHES
Situated above the preamplifier input connectors, six switches are provided to adjust
individually the loading of each input and this separately for each channel.
More, for the Moving magnet inputs, both resitive and capacitive load are provided.
Each switches has 10 positions, numbered 0 to 9.
Here is a table of the values applied for each position of each commutator:
* Commutator MCR-R and MCR-L
(Moving Coil Resitance-Right, and Moving Coil Resistance-Left)
The following values are parallel resistance load applied to the MC inputs.
One commutator controls the right input, the other one the left input.
Switch position Load applied on the input
- 10 Ohms
- 20 Ohms
- 50 Ohms
- 100 Ohms
- 470 Ohms
- 1.5 kOhms
- 4.7 kOhms
- 15 kOhms
- 47 kOhms
- Infinity (position 10 is marked 0
on the switch)
* Commutator MMR-R and MMR-L
(Moving Magnet Resitance - Right, and Moving Magnet Resistance - Left)
The following values are parallel resistance load applied to the MM inputs. One commutator
controls the right input, the other the left one.
Switch position Load applied on the input
- 50 Ohms
- 220 Ohms
- 1 kOhms
- 5 kOhms
- 10 kOhms
- 20 kOhms
- 33 kOhms
- 47 kOhms
- 100 kOhms
Infinity (position 10 is marked 0 on
the switch)
* Commutator MMC-R and MMC-L
(Moving Magnet Capacitance - Right, and Moving Magnet Capacitance - Left)
The following values are parallel capacitors load applied to the MM inputs. One commutator
controls the right input, the other the left one.
Switch position Load applied on the input
- 20 pF
- 50 pF
- 100 pF
- 220 pF
- 470 pF
- 1 nF
- 2.2 nF
- 4.7 nF
- 10 nF
- 0 (10 is marked a 0 on the
switch)
6 - SOUND QUALITY OPTIMIZATION
Warm-up sonic effect.
If the GOLDMUND MIMESIS PH2 phono preamplifier has been left unpowered for a few
days, the optimum sound quality is only reached after many hours. The critical circuits have
to warm up to around +50 degrees Celsius (+120 degrees Fahrenheit) before achieving
their optimal performances.
7 - MAINTENANCE
The GOLDMUND MIMESIS PH2 phono preamplifier usually requires no maintenance. For
the audio purists who want to keep their preamp sounding as new, we only recommend that
after a year or two, you have a technician or an official GOLDMUND representative readjust
the DC offset. This very simple operation takes only two minutes and will give you the
safety of long years of unmatched sound quality.
To clean your MIMESIS use only a soft, slightly wet cloth. Always turn the power off before
cleaning your preamplifier.
