Kawasaki KEL27B The Kawasaki KEL27B is a high-speed, fast-cutting handheld edger designed for cutting grass, weeds, and small garden plants. Before using the handheld edger, clear your work area of hard, foreign objects such as stones, glass, wire, metal, and trash. While edging, keep hands and feet away from the cutting blade at all times. The rotating cutting blade can hurl objects, causing injury. General

A handheld edger is a high-speed, fast-

cutting power tool, not a toy. For your

own safety and the safety of others, read

and be sure you understand all of the

safety precautions contained in this

Owner's Manual before operating the

handheld edger. Retain the Owner's

Manual, and make it available to all per-

sons who will be using the handheld

edger. Periodically, review the manual to

refresh your understanding of the safety

instructions contained in it.

Careless or improper use can cause

serious or fatal injury.

Observe the safety instructions con-

tained in this manual as well as all

applicable governmental and work-

place safety standards, regulations

and ordinances. Your authorized

Kawasaki dealer can show you how to

operate your handheld edger properly.

Contact with rotating cutting blade

will cause severe injury.

While edging, keep hands and feet

away from the cutting blade at all

times.

The rotating cutting blade can hurl

objects, causing injury.

Keep bystanders, children and ani-

mals at least 15 m (50 feet) away

while the handheld edger is in use.

Never use a handheld edger in areas

where the blade may strike a hard for-

eign object, such as stone. Striking a

hard object can damage the handheld

edger, and may crack, chip or even

break off cutting blade. Flying blade

pieces can cause severe or fatal

injury.

Do not allow children to operate the

handheld edger.

Operators must have sufficient size,

strength and maturity to be able to lift

and operate the handheld edger cor-

rectly for extended periods of use.

They must also be able to read, under-

stand and follow the safety instructions

in this manual.

Exhaust fumes contain poisonous

carbon monoxide gas.

Operate your handheld edger only out-

doors in a well-ventilated area. Stop

the engine immediately if exhaust

fumes cause you to experience symp-

toms of headache or nausea.

worn. Hearing protection, such as

earplugs, should also be used. Have

your hearing checked regularly.

Protect your hands and feet by always

wearing non-slip gloves and heavy-

duty boots when operating and han-

dling the handheld edger. Do not wear

short pants, sandals, or go barefoot.

Wear a hard hat to reduce the risk of

injury to your head when there is a

danger of head injuries.

Loose clothing or scarves can lead

to injury.

Long hair and loose articles of clothing

such as scarves, necklace jewelry can

become caught in nearby brush or in

rotating parts of the handheld edger

itself. Always wear sturdy close-fitting

long-sleeve shirts and long pants that

still allow freedom of movement.

Secure hair so that it is above shoul-

der level.

Maintain your balance to avoid loss

of control and injury.

Before and while edging, inspect the

area for loose and uneven ground,

holes or ditches, tree branches or

stumps, and other such objects on or

above the ground that could cause

stumbling. The handheld edger must

be operated with the wheel stably on

the ground and with the operator

maintaining footing and balance at all

times. Keep the handheld edger, and

any part of your body away from

fences, the side of buildings, tree

trunks, stones or other such objects

which can cause improper footing or

balance. Keep both hands on the

handheld edger and do not overreach.

Never attempt to cut with one hand.

Perform edging work with the cutting

blade perpendicular to the ground.

Use of the handheld edger with the

cutting blade parallel to the ground

(just as you do with a trimmer) can

cause serious or fatal personal injury.

Gasoline is highly flammable and

can burn or irritate skin.

Change clothing immediately if fuel is

spilled on it. Never remove the fuel

cap while the engine is running.

Be alert for signs of repetitive

stress injury.

Using a handheld edger or any vibrat-

ing machinery over a period of time

may cause numbness, burning sensa-

tions, or other indications of injury. If

you experience any such symptoms,

do not operate the handheld edger

and consult your doctor.

Gasoline is highly flammable and

can be explosive under certain con-

ditions.

Before refueling, stop the engine and

allow it to cool. Do not smoke. Make

sure refueling area is well ventilated

and free from any source of flame or

sparks, including appliances with a

pilot light. Wipe up fuel spills immedi-

ately. Check for and repair any fuel

leaks before starting the handheld

edger. Move the handheld edger at

least 3 m (10 feet) from the fueling

source and site before starting the

engine.

Operator

Inattention or fatigue can lead to

serious or fatal injury.

Never operate the handheld edger

under the influence of drugs or alco-

hol. Do not use the handheld edger if

you are sick or taking medication that

causes drowsiness. If you get tired

while using the handheld edger, take a

break.

Always wear appropriate protective

gear to avoid injury.

Eye protection in the form of goggles

or properly fitted safety glasses with

adequate top and side protection com-

plying with ANSI Z87.1 (or your appli-

cable national standard) must be

recoil starter firmly by the grip. Do not

grasp the starter rope itself. Always

control the rope when it is being

rewined into the housing. Releasing

the starter rope suddenly may allow

the rope to whip around and injure you

or damage the recoil starter mecha-

nism.

Hard objects can damage the hand-

held edger or be thrown and cause

injury.

The handheld edger is for cutting

grass, weeds and small garden plants.

Before using the handheld edger,

clear your work area of hard, foreign

objects such as stones, glass, wire,

metal and trash. Make sure the cut-

ting blade has stopped before putting

the handheld edger down, also, be

certain the handheld edger is turned

off.

Proper maintenance is essential for

safety.

A well-maintained handheld edger is

safer and operates more efficiently.

Regularly check that the handheld

edger adjustments are made accord-

ing to the periodic maintenance chart

in the manual and replace worn or

damaged parts. If engine idling speed

is set too high, the cutting blade will

not stop when the operator releases

the throttle lever. A worn out or dam-

aged muffler can emit sparks and

cause a fire. Increased noise levels

can lead to hearing loss. Observe

maintenance schedule in this Owner's

Manual.

Store the handheld edger safely to

prevent fire or equipment damage.

To avoid fuel leakage and fire hazard,

always empty the fuel tank and run the

carburetor dry before storing your

handheld edger. Old fuel can clog the

carburetor and lead to hard starting or

poor running conditions. Store the

handheld edger in a dry, secure loca-

tion out of the reach of children. When

transporting handheld edger in a vehi-

cle, take precautions to secure it

against damage from falling over and

fuel spillage.

Handheld Edger

Modifying the handheld edger may

make it unsafe

Never modify your handheld edger,

except as advised by Kawasaki in writ-

ing. Use only Kawasaki supplied or

approved attachments and repair

parts.

Damaged or loose parts can break

off and injure operator or

bystanders.

Always inspect your handheld edger

before each use. Check to be sure the

throttle works smoothly and snaps to

the closed position when released.

Never use a handheld edger with a

sticking throttle lever. Be sure the cut-

ting blade is fastened in place properly

and is not cracked, bent, warped or

broken.

Guard with flap must be in place to

prevent injury.

If the guard with flap is out of position,

flying objects or the cutting blade itself

can injure the operator or bystanders.

Before starting the engine, check to be

sure the guard with flap is fastened in

place properly. Never operate the

handheld edger without the guard with

flap installed.

Recoil starter rope can cause injury

if released suddenly.

When starting the engine, grasp the

engine with low exhaust pollutant levels.

Proper maintenance is necessary to

ensure that your engine will continue to

have low emission levels. This Owner s

Manual contains those maintenance rec-

ommendations for your engine. Those

items identified by the Periodic

Maintenance Chart are necessary to

ensure compliance with the applicable

standards.

As the owner of the handheld edger, you

have the responsibility to make sure that

the recommended maintenance is car-

ried out according to the instructions in

this Owner s Manual at your own

expense.

The Kawasaki Limited Emission Control

System Warranty requires that you

return your engine to an authorized

Kawasaki dealer for remedy under war-

ranty. Please read the warranty carefully,

and keep it valid by complying with the

owner s obligations it contains.

Tampering with Emission Control

System is Prohibited

Federal law and California state law pro-

hibit the following acts or the causing

thereof: (1) the removal or rendering

inoperative by any person other than for

purposes of maintenance, repair, or

replacement, of any device or element of

design incorporated into any new engine

for the purposes of emission control prior

to its sale or delivery to the ultimate pur-

chaser or while it is in use,or(2)the use

of the engine after such device or ele-

ment of design has been removed or

rendered inoperative by any person.

Among those acts presumed to consti-

tute tampering are the acts listed below.

Do not tamper with the original emission

related parts.

Fuel Information

THIS ENGINE IS CERTIFIED TO

OPERATE ON UNLEADED REGULAR

GRADE GASOLINE ONLY.

A minimum of 87 octane of the antiknock

index is recommended. The antiknock

index is posted on service station pumps

in the U.S.A.

Emission Control Information

To protect the environment in which we

all live, Kawasaki has incorporated

exhaust emission control system in com-

pliance with applicable regulations of the

United States Environmental Protection

Agency, and the California Air

Resources Board. Also, depending on

when your engine was produced, it may

have an assigned emissions durability

period.

tion. Those who plan to do their own

Installation of the Loop Handle

Place handle assembly at positioning

label on the pipe assembly and tighten

the 4 bolts by using the screwdriver.

Installation of the Cutting Blade

Insert the Allen wrench (C) into the

hole at the side of the holder (A).

the holder (B) until the Allen wrench

slips into position and blocks the out-

put shaft (D).

Remove the nut (E) and holder (B)

from the output shaft by unscrewing

the nut clockwise (left-hand thread).

Align the hole (1 inch) of the cutting

blade (F) with the holder (A).

Fit the holder (B) and the nut at the

output shaft.

Tighten the nut by screwing it counter-

clockwise firmly.

Remove the Allen wrench from the

holder (A).

NOTE

When fitting the holder (B) on the cut-

ting blade, make sure that there is no

space between the holder (A) and cut-

ting blade.

If the cutting blade is not installed

properly. It may cause abnormal vibra-

tion.

NOTE

Do not use the gasoline that has been

stored longer than two months.

To ensure proper starting at low ambi-

ent temperatures, fresh winter grade

fuel must be used.

Filling the Tank:

Level the engine before fueling.

Open the fuel tank cap and fill the tank

with 50:1 gas/oil pre-mixed fuel.

Pour slowly to avoid "spit back" and

allow air to escape from the tank.

Alcohol or "gasohol" may damage the

engine. The handheld edger is

designed to run on a 50-to-1 mixture of

unleaded regular gasoline (87 octane)

and quality JASO FC class 2-stroke oil

for air-cooled engines.

CAUTION

Fuel and Oil

Type:

The fuel is mixture of gasoline and oil. A

50 to 1 mixture is recommended (50

parts gasoline to 1 part oil). Mix it thor-

oughly before pouring it into the hand-

held edger fuel tank.

The octane rating of gasoline is a meas-

ure of its resistance to detonation or

"knocking". Use a gasoline with an

octane rating equal to or higher than that

shown in the table below. The Antiknock

Index is an average of the Research

Octane No. (RON) and the Motor Octane

No. (MON). The Antiknock Index is post-

ed on service station pumps in the

U.S.A. If the Antiknock Index is not post-

ed, be sure the Research Octane No. is

adequate.

Gasoline is a toxic substance. Dispose of

gasoline properly. Contact your local

authorities for approved disposal methods.

WARNING

Gasoline is highly flammable and can

be explosive under certain circum-

stances.

Never overfill tank so that fuel rises into

filler neck. Heat may cause fuel to

expand and overflow through vents in

tank cap. After re-fueling, make sure

cap is closed securely. If gasoline is

spilled on engine or tank, wipe it off

immediately.

Move handheld edger at least 3 m (10

feet) from the fueling place before start-

ing the engine.

Operating Instructions

Stopping the Engine

Ordinary Stop

Release the throttle lever and keep the

engine running at idling speed for

about 1 minute.

Turn the engine switch to the "O"

(Stop) position.

Suddenly stopping from high-speed

operation can cause engine damage.

Reduce engine speed to idle for 1

minute before shutting engine off after

high-speed, full-load operation.

CAUTION

Recommended Mixing Ratio (50:1)

Adjustment of Cutting Blade Position

Loosen the clamp nut.

Holding the pipe assembly, move the

pipe assembly up or down to reset the

cutting blade at an appropriate posi-

tion.

Emergency Stop

Turn the engine switch to the "O"

(Stop) position.

Release the throttle lever.

Starting the Engine

Turn the engine switch to the"I"(On)

position with the throttle lever in the

fully closed (Engine idling speed) posi-

tion.

Slowly push the priming pump several

times until the fuel comes out of the

overflow tube. When the gasoline

overflows, stop push the priming

pump.

NOTE

The fuel that overflows by pushing the

priming pump is by design returned to

the fuel tank.

There is no fear of flooding the engine,

so push the priming pump enough

times to get the engine started.

Firmly push the starter button to switch

to the "Starting" position.

NOTE

A setting sound "Click" can be heard

when the button is firmly pushed in.

When the engine is already warm or

on hot days, do not push the starter

button.

Pull the recoil starter grip slowly to

engage the starter, then give a short,

quick pull.

WARNING

Confirm that the cutting blade is not

contacting the ground or other object

before starting the engine.

WARNING

During engine starting, cutting blade

will rotate and can cause injury.

The cutting blade is engaged when

engine speed is above idle.

This occurs normally during starting.

Keep bystanders, children and animals

at least 15 m (50 feet) away while start-

ing and operating your handheld edger.

WARNING

Recoil starter rope can cause injury if

released suddenly.

When starting the engine, grasp the

recoil starter firmly by the grip. Do not

grasp the starter rope itself. Always

control the rope during rewind into the

housing. Releasing the starter rope sud-

denly may allow the rope to whip

around and injure you or damage the

recoil starting mechanism.

Warming Up

After starting the engine, run the

engine at the idling speed (throttle

lever position is fully CLOSED) for a

few minutes.

Idling Speed

If the cutting blade moves when the

engine is running at the idling speed,

"Running" position and repeat the

starting procedure.

After starting, vary the engine speed a

few minutes, to draw out the remaining

air in the carburetor.

Allow sufficient warm-up time to prevent

engine damage. The handheld edger

should be run at idling speed for 3 to 5

minutes to allow it to warmup before

applying a load. This will allow oil to

reach all engine parts, and allow piston

clearance to reach design specifica-

tions.

CAUTION

Slightly move the throttle lever to

switch the starter button to the

"Running" (Engine idling speed) posi-

tion, and then move the throttle lever

back to fully closed (Engine idling

speed) position. If the engine fires, but

does not run continuously, repeat the

starting procedure with the starter but-

ton to the "Running" position.

NOTE

Should the engine fail to start, do not

try to pull the recoil starter grip too

many times with the starter button to

the

the fuel to flood into the cylinder and

make starting even more difficult. In

turn the idling adjust screw counter-

clockwise to decrease the engine

idling speed.

If the engine does not run the idling

speed, it may be changed too low, turn

the idling adjust screw clockwise to

increase the engine idling speed. The

stable idling speed is about 3000 r/min

(rpm).

Fuel Adjustment

The carburetor has been adjusted to the

optimum fuel supply at the factory. Do

not reset the carburetor setting.

NOTE

If adjustment is needed, it should be

performed by you're authorized

Kawasaki dealer.

Operating Instructions

When edging, hold your handheld edger

at the right side of your body facing the

edging direction.

When operating your handheld edger,

always hold the throttle lever and set

lever with your right hand while holding

the loop handle with your left hand.

Fuel tube

It is recommended to replace every 3 years

Accidental engine starting can cause injury. Always remove the spark plug cap before servicing the handheld edger to prevent acci-

dental starting.

WARNING

Improper air cleaner cleaning can result

in engine damage.

Do not operate engine with air cleaner

re-moved.

Air Cleaner Service

Clean the element every 20 hours in

use.

Remove the air cleaner cap from the

air cleaner case by pushing down the

latch area as shown.

Remove the element from the air

cleaner case.

Gently tap the element to remove dust

or loosen accumulated dirt. Apply low-

pressure com-pressed air as appropri-

ate or replace the element with a new

one as required.

Do not wash the element.

Reinstall the element in the air cleaner

case and reinstall the air cleaner cap

with the air cleaner case by firmly fit-

ting together at the latch area of the

case.

NOTE

Operating in dusty condition may

require more frequent maintenance

than above.

The element is susceptible to breakage

with high-pressure compressed air.

Fuel Filter Service

Clean the fuel filter element every 20

hours in use.

Take out the fuel filter with the fuel

tube out of the fuel tank, and then

remove the fuel filter from the fuel tube

to keep dust from entering into the fuel

filter.

Clean the fuel filter in a bath of high

flash-point solvent.

Dry the fuel filter before installing.

Install the fuel filter to the fuel tube,

and then put it into the fuel tank.

Install the fuel tank cap to the fuel

tank, and tighten the fuel tank cap

firmly.

CAUTION

WARNING

Improper use of solvents can result in

fire or explosion.

Clean the fuel filter in a well-ventilated

area away from sources of sparks or

flame, including appliances with a pilot

light. Never use gasoline or low-flash

point solvents to clean the fuel filter.

NOTE

If fuel does not flow better with the fuel

filter cleaned, replace the fuel filter with

new one.

Spark Plug Service

Clean or replace spark plug and reset

gap every 50 hours in use.

Disconnect the spark plug cap from

the spark plug and remove the spark

plug.

Clean the electrodes (B) by scraping

with a wire brush to remove carbon

deposits and wetness.

Inspect for cracked porcelain or other

wear and damage. Replace the spark

plug if necessary.

Check the spark plug gap and reset it

if necessary.

The gap must be between 0.6 mm

(0.024 in.) and 0.7 mm (0.028 in.). To

change the gap bend only side-elec-

trode, using a spark plug tool.

Install and tighten the spark plug to

12~17 N·m (1.2~1.7 kgf·m) then con

nect the spark plug cap.

Fit the spark plug caps on the spark

plug securely.

Pull up the spark plug cap lightly to

make sure of the installation of the

spark plug cap.

WARNING

Hot engine parts can cause severe

burns.

Allow engine to stop and cool before

checking spark plugs.

Spark Arrester Cleaning Service

Clean the net of spark arrester every 50

hours in use.

Remove the spark arrester in the

exhaust pipe of muffler.

Clean deposits from the net of spark

arrester by brushing it.

Reinstall the spark arrester.

Cutting Blade Service

Never sharpen, straighten or weld the

cutting blade. It might shatter and cause

serious or fatal injury.

Replace the cutting blade with a new

one when a crack or warp is found or the

cutting edges are dull.

NOTE

Before replacing the old cutting blade

with the new one, check for, and

remove any debris built up in the

guard. Then after cleaning the inside

of guard, install new cutting blade.

Debris build up may cause the guard

to crack or break with new cutting

blade.
