Precautions
For your safety, review the following personal safety warnings before
working with the Ethernet Routing Switch.
WARNING
Risk of injury by electric shock
To avoid the danger of electric shock, be careful when working
with power equipment and connections.
WARNING
Risk of injury by fan blades
When removing the fan module, do not put your hands into the
opening because there are spinning fan blades in the adjacent fan
modules. There is also a risk of electric shock from the electrical
connector at the rear of the slot.
WARNING
Risk of eye injury by laser
Never look directly into the end of a fiber cable or use optical
device to look at the end of a fiber cable unless certain the other
end of the cable is not connected. The laser travelling through a
fiber cable can injure the retina.
Protecting modules
Follow these general practices to prevent equipment damage when working
on the Ethernet Routing Switch:
Always wear an antistatic wrist strap connected to an Electrostatic
discharge (ESD) grounding jack when handling modules.
Always set modules on appropriate antistatic material.
Handle modules by the faceplate. Do not touch pins or electrical
connections.

10 Precautions
Do not leave slots open. All slots must be filled with modules or, if empty,
covered with slot covers to maintain safety compliance, proper cooling,
and EMI containment in the shelf.
Ensure that your environment meets the necessary requirements for
temperature, humidity, and cleanliness.
Replace the optional air filter regularly (approximately every three
months) to maintain proper cooling and airflow through the shelf.
Do not overtighten thumb screws or lug nuts. Tighten until snug plus a
quarter turn. If you use a power tool to tighten screws, use a low torque
setting (2-3 in/lbs).
Protecting cables and connectors
Support cables to prevent any stress on the connectors. If you have
a high cable density configuration, you need to install additional
cable-management equipment.
Do not exceed the bend radius recommended for the type of cable
installed.
Fiber optic cables and connectors require special care.
Protect connectors with rubber safety plugs when cables are not
inserted.
When installing or replacing cables, follow appropriate fiber-cleaning
procedures.
Do not exceed the bend radius recommended for fiber optic cable. The
acceptable bend radius for fiber optic cable is ten times its diameter, or
2.5-5 cm (1-2 in.). Anything less than the recommendation can cause
a loss of integrity of data transmission. Loss of integrity because of
incorrect bend radius is difficult to diagnose.
Electrostatic discharge
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is the transfer of charge between bodies at
different electrical potentials. ESD can change the electrical characteristics
of a semiconductor device and degrade or destroy it. ESD can also
disrupt the normal operation of an electronic system by causing equipment
malfunction or failure.
To dissipate or neutralize electrostatic charges, use proper grounding and
use conductive or dissipative materials.
Use an ESD wrist strap. Any charge in your body will go to ground rather
than transfer to hardware modules.

Electrostatic discharge 11
Proper antistatic packaging effectively shields the product from charge and
reduces the generation of charge caused by movement of the product
within the container.

Removing a module or power filler panel
Nortel ships the 8000 series chassis with a filler panel covering each empty
module slot. On an 8003, 8006, and 8010 chassis, the filler panel covers
an empty module slot. On the 8010co chassis, the filler panel resembles a
module and is installed in the empty module slot. Remove any filler panels
prior to installing the chassis to make it lighter to install.
To remove a module or power filler panel:
Step Action
1Using a Phillips screwdriver, loosen the 2 screws that fasten the
filler panel to the chassis.
2Pull the panel away from the slot.
Figure 1 "Removing a filler cover for 8003, 8006, and 8010 chassis"
(page 14) shows the location of the filler cover for the 8003, 8006,
and 8010 chassis. Figure 2 "Removing a filler panel for 8010co
chassis" (page 15) shows the location of the filler panel for the
8010co chassis.

CAUTION
Risk of injury
All fully loaded chassis require two people to lift. To
prevent injury, keep your back straight and lift with your
legs.
8010 chassis weighs approximately 101 kg (225 lbs)
8006 chassis weighs approximately 77 kg (170 lbs)
8003 chassis weighs approximately 49.5 kg (110 lbs)
3To insert the chassis in a standard equipment rack (19-inch), hold the
chassis in position and align the flanged end of each mounting rail
with the two holes on each side of the vertical rack support (Figure 4
"Installing the 8010 chassis in an equipment rack" (page 17)).

Installing the 8010co chassis into the rack
The hardware required for mounting the chassis in a rack depends on
whether the rack type is a 19-inch two-post rack or a Hendry rack.
Installing the 8010co chassis in a 19-inch two-post rack
Use the 12 Phillips screws and a Phillips screwdriver to install the chassis in
a standard 19-inch two-post rack.
To install the 8010co chassis in a 19-inch two-post rack:
Step Action
1Place the installation shelf at the bottom of the rack inside the rails.
2Holding the installation shelf in position, align the shelf’s mounting
rail with the two holes on each side of the vertical rack support.
3Insert a Phillips screw through each installation shelf mounting hole
and into the corresponding hole in the rack (Figure 5 "Installing the
shelf in a 19-inch equipment rack: 8010co chassis" (page 18)).

4Add a hex nut to each screw and tighten using a hex wrench.
5Tighten each screw with a Phillips screwdriver.
6If the holes in the rack’s vertical supports require clip nuts, insert a
clip nut in each of the 12 locations.
7Lift the 8010co chassis onto the installation shelf.
CAUTION
Risk of injury
It requires three people to lift the 8010co chassis. To
make the chassis lighter, remove the I/O modules and
power supplies before lifting .
8Holding the 8010co chassis in position, align the flanged end of the
chassis mounting rail with six holes on each side of the vertical rack
support.
Make sure that the hole pairs on either side of the vertical support
match horizontally.
9Tighten each screw with a Phillips screwdriver.
