1.1 Designated use
Field Xpert is an industrial PDA with integrated 3.5" touchscreen based on Windows Mobile. It
communicates via wireless with the optional VIATOR Bluetooth modem connected to a HART
device point-to-point or wireless via WiFi and Endress+Hauser’s Fieldgate FXA520. Field Xpert also
works as a stand-alone device for asset management applications. It may be used only as described
in this manual and only with the components recommended by Endress+Hauser, which where
necessary must have appropriate certification.
1.2 Commissioning and operation
Field Xpert must be connected, operated and maintained according to the instructions in this
manual: personnel must be authorised and suitably qualified.
Prerequisites for proper and safe operation of the product are its correct transport, correct storage
and installation as well as careful operation and maintenance.
1.3 Operational safety
Operational environment Field Xpert fulfils the harmonized, European standards (EN) for the various environments in which
it is designed to operate. The permissible operating conditions as described in the technical data
must be upheld. VIATOR Bluetooth modem is ATEX and IS certified.
Explosion hazardous areas The following hazardous areas are to be considered:
• Field Xpert Non-ex version for operation outside of the Ex-area
• Field Xpert Ex Atex for operation in explosion hazardous areas Zone 1
• Field Xpert Ex FM for operation in explosion hazardous areas Zone 1
• VIATOR Bluetooth modem for operation in explosion hazardous areas Zone 1
Repair Do not open the Field Xpert housing. It contains no components that need be maintained or can be
repaired by the user. In the event of a fault or defect, return the device to Endress+Hauser. Opening
the device housing invalidates the warranty and Ex-certification.
The VIATOR Bluetooth modem may be opened for battery exchange as described later in this
manual.
1.4 Declaration of conformity
A declaration of EC-Conformity has been issued for both Ex and Non-Ex versions.
They are available as follows:
• Endress+Hauser CD-ROM (folder Field Xpert/Confirmation)
1.5 Technical improvement
Endress+Hauser reserves the right to make technical improvements to its hardware and software as
well as equipment at any time and without prior notification. Where such improvements have no
effect on the operation of the equipment, they are not documentated. If the improvements effect
operation, a new version of the operating instructions is normally issued.

3.2 VIATOR Bluetooth modem (optional)
The VIATOR Bluetooth modem is a point-to-point interface for temporary connection to HART-
enabled field devices for use primarily as a configuration management tool. It is approved for
explosion hazardous areas and operates approx. 20 hours powered by internal replaceable batteries.
Our Field Xpert and the modem communicate via Bluetooth and the modem itself is physically
attached to the HART field device by connector wires. Please check chapter 5.
The VIATOR Bluetooth modem contains a Class 1 Bluetooth radio with a range of up to 100 meters.
The Field Xpert is using a Class 2 Bluetooth adapter and limits this range to 10 meters. The operating
range can be reduced by interference from other nearby devices transmitting in the 2.4 Ghz ISM
band. These interference sources include some cordless telephones, wireless networking devices
and even microwave ovens. Interference can prevent the establishment of a Bluetooth connection
and may also cause HART network message retries.

3.2.2 Getting started with the VIATOR Bluetooth modem
1 The VIATOR Bluetooth modem requires three AAA alkaline batteries that are part of the
delivery. Insert them into the battery compartment of your VIATOR Bluetooth modem by
unlocking the appropriate screw.
2 Observe the correct polarities of the batteries.
3 Close the battery compartment with the appropriate cover and screw.
!Note!
• To save battery energy, we recommend you to switch off the modem when not using it.
3.2.3 Power button
• Switch on the modem by shortly pressing the power button. This action is confirmed by a
constant green LED and followed by a blinking green LED indicating the device is switched on.
Switching on the modem automatically activates the Bluetooth function.
• Switch off the modem by pressing the power button for approx. 2 seconds. A green constant
LED will illuminate while you press. Release button. The LED indication and the device will
be switched off.
3.2.4 LED status
• Depressing the power button briefly while the modem is on will indicate the amount of charge
left in the battery.
• 4 Blinks = 80% or more battery power remaining
3 Blinks = 50% or more battery power remaining
2 Blinks = 30% or more battery power remaining
1 Blinks = 10% or more battery power remaining
0 Blinks = less than 10% battery power remaining.
We recommend you replace the batteries immediately.
3.2.5 Under voltage lockout
When the battery voltage drops below the shutdown voltage of 2.8 V, the modem will immediately
power itself off. The batteries must be replaced.
"Caution
• If the modem switches off automatically, make sure that the last actions are transmitted to the
device again by retransmission after replacement of batteries.
3.2.6 Inactivity power down
The VIATOR Bluetooth modem will power down to conserve battery life after 30 minutes without
Bluetooth connection. The power button must be pressed to switch on the modem once the
inactivity timeout has expired.
Field Xpert 3 Getting Started
Endress+Hauser 11
3.2.7 Initial connection
The VIATOR Bluetooth modem uses the standard Bluetooth Serial Port Profile (SPP) which is
supported by most Bluetooth hosts. Using SPP creates a virtual serial COM port which allows the
interface to be used with HART applications in a manner similar to a traditional built-in serial COM
port.
The VIATOR Bluetooth modems have a preset Bluetooth device name in the format of
"MACTekVIATORXXXX" where "XXXX" represents the last four hexadecimal digits of the Bluetooth
MAC address for the device. The Bluetooth MAC address is printed above the serial number on the
front label. Use this name to choose the correct device in a busy Bluetooth environment. When you
connect to the Bluetooth modem the first time, you need to use a PIN code to establish a
connection.
Pin code: mactek (all lowercase)
Many Bluetooth stacks will create two COM ports when initially establishing an SPP connection to
the VIATOR Bluetooth modem, which is an incoming and an outgoing one. The outgoing COM port
number will be used by Device Xpert. This connection setup only has to be performed the first time
a VIATOR modem is used, Field Xpert will continue to remember the PIN code and the COM port
number.
