Instructions for the firmware update
Instructions for the firmware update
Introduction
These instructions describe how to update the firmware for a BERNINA machine. The file names and figures
used in these instructions may differ depending on the operating system that is installed. The screenshots
shown in these instructions were created on Windows 10.
The following is required for the firmware update:
PC (Windows 7 or later) with Internet access and USB port
Empty USB stick (FAT32-formatted)
Please note: The BERNINA USB stick (special accessory) is intended for use with all BERNINA machines that
have a USB port. It is already formatted for FAT32. Many other USB sticks may also work but there is no
guarantee that any particular USB stick will work. BERNINA recommends deleting any data that is saved on
the USB stick before updating, or transferring this data to a different storage medium.
Firmware update on macOS
The firmware update cannot be readily unpacked using the Apple operating system. To load the firmware to
the USB stick anyway, you have two options:
Use the Windows operating system on a dual-boot system (Boot Camp)
Use a Windows emulator on the Apple operating system along with appropriate software to unpack the
ZIP files
Preparation
Formatting the USB stick
To ensure that the USB stick works with the BERNINA machine, the USB stick must be formatted in the
FAT32 file system.
Please note: During formatting, all files on the USB stick are irretrievably deleted.
> Insert the USB stick into the PC.
> Open Windows Explorer.
> Right-click on the USB stick and select «Format» from the context menu.
> If «FAT32» has already been selected under «File system», close the window.
The USB stick is already formatted to FAT32.
> If «FAT32» has not already been selected under «File system», select «FAT32».
