Notes
BMW CD players and changers are
Class 1 laser products. Do not use them if
the cover is damaged, otherwise there is a risk
of serious eye injuries.
Do not use CDs with adhesive labels that have
been affixed subsequently, as these may peel
off while in the drive as a result of the tempera-
tures to which CDs are exposed during playing,
and could damage the system irreparably.
Use only round CDs with a standard diameter of
12 cm and do not use CDs in conjunction with
adapters, e.g. CD singles, as otherwise the CDs
or the adapter could jam and it may not be pos-
sible to eject the CD.
Do not use combined CD/DVDs, e.g. DVD
Plus
.
Otherwise the CD/DVD could jam and it may not
be possible to eject it.<
General faults
BMW CD players and changers are optimised
for operation in the vehicle. They may respond
more sensitively to defective CDs than devices
intended for stationary use.
If a CD cannot be played, first check that it has
been inserted the right way up.
Atmospheric humidity
A high level of humidity may cause the CD or
the laser beam focusing lens to fog over and
temporarily prevent the CD from being played.
Faults on individual CDs
If faults only occur on certain CDs, this can be
due to one of the following reasons.
Self-recorded CDs
Faults occurring with self-recorded CDs may be
attributable to inconsistent data creation and
recording methods, for example, or inferior
quality or severe ageing of the blank CD used.
Only write on the upper side of CDs using a spe-
cial marker pen.
Online Edition for Part no. 01 41 0 014 407 - © 02/08 BMW AG
15
Damaged CDs
Avoid fingerprints and protect against dust,
scratches and moisture.
Store CDs in a case.
Do not expose CDs to temperatures in excess
of 50 6, high atmospheric humidity and direct
sunlight.
CDs with copy protection
CDs are often copy-protected by the manufac-
turer. This may have the result that CDs cannot
be played or can only be played to a limited
extent.
Looking after CDs/DVDs
Wipe the reflective (signal) side of the CD when
required with a cleaning cloth available from
retailers, by wiping in a straight line from the
centre to the outside edge.

USB audio interface*
You can connect audio devices such as an iPod
or a USB device (MP3 player, USB memory
stick) to the USB audio interface. You can oper-
ate these via the iDrive.
The common audio files, e.g. MP3, WMA, WAV
(PCM) and AAC as well as playlists in M3U for-
mat, can be played.
Because of the huge number of audio devices
on the market, operation via the vehicle cannot
be ensured for every audio device.
Ask your BMW Service which audio devices are
suitable.
Connection
BMW 1 Series:
BMW 3 Series:
1 Sound connection:
Jack connector 3.5 mm
2 USB interface
Depending on the equipment, your vehi-

the USB audio interface.
USB device
Use the flexible adapter cable provided
for connecting in order to protect the USB
interface and your USB device from damage.<
For replay via the car loudspeakers, connect the
USB device with connection 2.
After being connected for the first time, the
information for all tracks (e.g. artist, genre) and
the playback lists of the USB device are trans-
ferred to the vehicle. This process can take a
few moments. The time it takes depends on the
USB device and on the number of tracks.
The information from up to four USB devices for
a total of approx. 20,000 tracks can be stored in
the car.
If you connect a fifth USB device, the informa-
tion on the tracks of the first USB device stored
in the vehicle is erased.
