CEM Q-Dry Quick start guide

  • Hello! I've reviewed the Quick Start Guide for the CEM Q-Dry Solvent Evaporator. This document provides instructions on the system's installation, operation, and safety precautions. It highlights the ability of the Q-Dry to quickly and efficiently evaporate samples using temperature and nitrogen control. I'm ready to help answer any questions you may have about this device.
  • What vial sizes are compatible with the Q-Dry?
What is the recommended nitrogen pressure for operation?
Where should the dry block heater be installed?

Q-Dry Solvent Evaporator
The Q-Dry offers rapid and efcient evaporation of samples to complete
dryness. The design of the metal block allows for usage of either the 40 mL or
60 mL EDGE collection vials. With full control over temperature and nitrogen
ow, the evaporator can be adjusted to suit any extract.
WARNING
Proper precautions must be taken to avoid contact with reagents
or reagent vapors. Protective gear should be worn as outlined in
the user’s safety program for hazardous materials and the reagent
manufacturer’s safety data sheet. Refer to these guidelines for
proper handling and disposal of the reagents. Dispose of all waste
in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal health and
safety recommendations.
HOT
Avoid prolonged exposure to metal block positioned on the dry block
heater. Surface is hot to the touch.
Read and understand the VWR Dry Block Heater Instruction Manual, (P/N
549040-00) before installing the Q-Dry.
System Installation
1. Place the dry block heater in the fume hood.
WARNING
The dry block heater must be installed in an adequately rated fume
hood.
2. Place the heating block A onto the dry block heater.
3. Place the rod with attached regulator and ow meter B onto the dry block
heater.
4. Place the adjustable nitrogen manifold C onto the rod.
5. Connect the supplied 1/4” tube D from the ow meter to the manifold.
6. Connect a 1/4” tube from the nitrogen source to the push-to-connect
tting on the regulator. The tube and connections to the nitrogen source
are not supplied with the Q-Dry instrument. A minimum of 80 psi is recom-
mended.
7. Locate the VWR instruction manual (P/N 549040-00) for installation
instructions regarding the dry block heater.

Evaporation Procedure
1. Set the temperature on the dry block heater below the most volatile analyte to
ensure that no analytes are lost during evaporation. Locate the VWR instruction
manual (P/N 549040-00) for instructions on setting the heater.
2. Once temperature has stabilized, raise the nitrogen manifold by twisting the black
knob counterclockwise and lift to an appropriate height to permit loading of the
vials.
3. Twist clockwise to lock the manifold in place.
4. Load the uncapped vial(s) into the metal block, being careful to avoid prolonged
direct contact with the heated metal block. Collections vials can be purchased from
CEM Corporation or through its authorized dealer network.
• P/N 153450 - 40 mL Clear Glass Graduated Vials, Pack of 72
• P/N 153455 - 40 mL Amber Glass Vials, Pack of 72
• P/N 153300 - 40 mL Clear Glass Vials, Pack of 72
• P/N 153700 - 60 mL Clear Glass Collection Vials, Pack of 72
• P/N 153705 - 60 mL Amber Glass Collection Vials, Pack of 72
5. Lower the manifold into place using the black knob until the nozzles are inside the
vials.
6. Turn the nut located on top of the nitrogen manifold counter-clockwise to allow the
ow of nitrogen for the desired position(s). Close all positions that are not in use.
7. Turn on the nitrogen ow using the black knob located on the owmeter. Ensure
that the ow is low enough to prevent splashing out of the vials but high enough to
increase the evaporation rate.
NOTE
The pressure regulator has been set to 80 psi to ensure the safety of the user
and the longevity of the evaporator; therefore, the pressure regulator should
never be adjusted.
8. Once evaporation has completed, close all positions on the manifold and remove
the vials as outlined in the steps above.
Flow Rates
Number of Vials 40 mL Vial(s) 60 mL Vial(s)
1-6 < 40 SCFH < 80 SCFH
7-12 < 80 SCFH < 140 SCFH
SCFH = Standard Cubic Feet per Hour
• Start with a low ow to ensure that there is no risk of splashing of extract.
• Increase ow as needed by 20 SCFH every 10 minutes to speed up the rate of
evaporation.
