Before Using the Product
This chapter provides information you should know before using the product.
About the PC Card
The AD12-8(PM) is a PCMCIA 2.0/JEIDA 4.1 PC card for performing analog I/O. The card includes
a function to convert analog input signals to digital (AD conversion) and a function to convert digital
signals to analog (DA conversion).
You can use the card in PC card slots that support the PCMCIA 2.0/JEIDA 4.1 or later specifications
(including PC Card Standard).
Number of input channels: 8, Conversion speed: 10
μ
sec/ch, Resolution: 12-bit A/D conversion
Number of output channels: 2, Conversion speed: 16
μ
sec/ch, Resolution: 12-bit D/A conversion
You can use the driver library (API-PAC(W32)) supplied with the PC card to write Windows
application programs in any programming language (such as Visual Basic, Visual C/C++, etc.) that
supports the calling of Win32 API functions.
Features
On-board buffer memory (For analog input)
The card has a FIFO format buffer memory sufficient for 16,384 data points. This can be used to
perform sampling in the background without affecting the PC processing performance.
Sampling control function (For analog input)
The sampling clock that determines the sampling speed can be selected from either the internal
sampling clock output from the internal clock generator, or from an external sampling clock input from
an external digital input.
Analog output function
The card has two analog output channels.
Digital I/O function
The card has four TTL level digital inputs and four digital outputs which can be used to monitor and
control external devices.
Safety design to adjust output voltage to 0V when power supply is turned on
To prevent the unstable voltage and the connected device of D/A converter from fault and malfunctions
when the power supply is turned on, the circuit is designed to adjusts output voltage of the analog output
to 0V.
Accessory devices
A range of accessory devices (options) are available to add additional functions.
Using these add-on devices makes it easy to manage signal wiring or add additional functions.
See the "Cable and Connectors" and "Accessories" sections of this chapter for more details about
available accessories.

Support Software
You should use CONTEC support software according to your purpose and development environment.
Driver Software Library
API-PAC(W32)
(Bundled)
API-PAC(W32) is the library software that provides the commands for CONTEC hardware products in
the form of Windows standard Win32 API functions (DLL). It makes it easy to create high-speed
application software taking advantage of the CONTEC hardware using various programming languages
that support Win32 API functions, such as Visual Basic and Visual C/C++.
It can also be used by the installed diagnosis program to check hardware operations.
CONTEC provides download services (at http://www.contec.co.jp/en/) to supply
the updated drivers
and differential files.
For details, read Help on the bundled CD-ROM or visit the CONTEC’s Web site.
< Operating environment >
OS Windows XP, 2000, NT, Me, 98, etc..
Adaptation language Visual C/C++, Borland C++, Visual Basic, etc..
Others Each piece of library software requires 50 megabytes of free hard disk space.

This chapter explains how to set up the PC card
What is Setup?
Setup means a series of steps to take before the product can be used.
Different steps are required for software and hardware
The setup procedure varies with the OS and applications used.
Using the PC Card under Windows
Using the Driver Library API-PAC(W32)
This section describes the setup procedure to be performed before you can start developing application
programs for the PC card using the bundled CD-ROM “Driver Library API-PAC(W32)”.
Taking the following steps sets up the software and hardware. You can use the diagnosis program later

PC card
.
The following description assumes the operating system as Windows Me. Although some user
interfaces are different depending on the OS used, the basic procedure is the same.
Which Driver to Use
CONTEC has two analog I/O drivers: API-AIO(WDM) and API-AIO(98/PC)W95/NT.
API-AIO(WDM) is a new driver for analog I/O under Windows.
This driver was developed to be easier to use and to provide additional functions above those provided
by the previous API-AIO(98/PC) driver.
CONTEC recommends that you use the API-AIO(WDM) driver for analog I/O devices. Although the
API-AIO(WDM) will support future OS versions and new devices, there is no plan to support Windows
NT4.0, Windows 95, the ISA bus, or C bus.
If your require support for one of these, please use the API-AIO(98/ PC) driver.
The figure below shows a selection guide to help you select which drivers you can use.
