AVOIDCOLLISIONS-
In all gasoline powered boats,engine and generator exhaust
systems produce colorless and odorless carbon monoxide gas
(“CO”).Direct prolongedexposurecanresultin CO poisoning
whichmay be harmful orfatal.Toprevent excess exposureand
reduce the possibility of accumulations of CO in the cabin and
cockpitoftheboat,theoperatorshouldinsureadequateventilation
ineachthecabin and cockpit areas, throughutilizationof cabin
hatches,cabindoors,cabinwindows,cockpitwindshieldwindows
andside windshield ventstoincrease air movementthrough the
cabinandcockpitareas.Thefollowingconditionstendtoincrease
the accumulation of CO in and about the boat and require the
operator’sparticularattention:
1. Operation at slow speeds or dead in the water.
2. Operationwithahighbowangleattitude.
3. Theutilizationofcanvastops,sidecurtainsandback
curtains.
4. Contributingclimaticconditions,suchasaheadwind.
5. Operationofenginesand/orgeneratorinconned
spacesoratdockside.
6. Anyblockageofhullexhaustoutlets.
Indications of excessive exposure to CO concentrations may
includenausea,dizzinessanddrowsiness.
