Akbar 89 fire doors are a convenient and
practical solution to safety and protection.
Designed to accommodate optional
operation methods including powered
closing and testing. Akbar 89 fire doors
have a 3 or 4-hour label rating for masonry
and steel (minimum

") jambs. Also
available are the

hour label
ratings for non-masonry walls with fire
rated drywall over minimum 16 guage steel
or wood studs.
For use on interior openings and
recommended for use on exterior openings
which may later become interior in future
building expansion.
• Original counterbalance spring tension is
maintained up to 85% after automatic
closure; if the door is raised for any
reason, it will automatically close again.
• Safety governor retards the speed of
automatic closing to under 2' per second.
Minimizes possibility of accidents and
prevents impact on sills, rebound or
jamming of slats—a UL requirement for
automatic fire doors.

Lift-Up—Curtain is raised or lowered via
lift handles mounted on curtain bottom
bar. Interchangeability—All Akbar 89
manually operated fire doors are designed
to accommodate future motor, chain or
crank operation.
• Recommended Options For Fire Doors
Larger Than 80 Sq. Ft.:
Chain Hoist—Curtain is raised or lowered
by hand chain through reduction gearing
on end of counterbalance assembly.
Crank—Curtain is raised or lowered via
awning-type crank and operates through
shaft and reduction gearing on end of
counterbalance assembly.
Motor—Curtain is raised or lowered by
operators, which are activated by
conveniently located pushbuttons and
other devices. Motor operators can be field
applied to any existing Akbar 89 door.
Available with Standard (curved) or
Optional (flat) 2" slats or 3" slats.
Fire Lites: For situations where visibility
and/or light are required. Not available on
F.M. rated fire doors.
Optional Welded Guides: As a matter of
convenience and/or to speed up installation
of the Akbar 89 fire door, the guides may
be welded to steel jambs. This eliminates
the need to drill and tap mounting holes,
saving installation time and cost. Not
available on F.M. rated fire doors.

PART 1 GENERAL
1.01 Work Included—The steel
rolling automatic fire doors will be
Wayne-Dalton Akbar 89 Model ___ as
manufactured by Wayne-Dalton Corp.
1.02 Related Work—Opening
preparation, miscellaneous or
structural metal work, access panels,
finish or field painting, field electrical
wiring, wire, conduit, fuses, and
disconnect switches are in the Scope
of Work of other divisions or trades.
PART 2 PRODUCT
2.01 Curtain will be composed of
interlocking curved slats rolled from
galvanized and bonderized steel with
gray baked-on paint per ASTM
standards. Size and gauge of slats to
be as required by Underwriters’
Laboratories to meet their standards
for labeled constructed fire doors.
Metal endlocks will be included on
ends of alternate slats.
Bottom Bar will be reinforced with two
steel angles of equal size and weight
bolted together
. (Astragal available to
assist in cushioning and sealing
bottom of door.)
2.02 Guides will be of steel angles so
as to provide track in which curtain can
travel and for expansion at all bolt
connections. (Perimeter seals can be
installed to reduce air infiltration
around door opening.)
2.03 Brackets will be of precision
formed plate, with permanently sealed
ball bearings, designed to enclose ends
of coil and provide support for
counterbalance pipe at each end.
2.04 Counterbalance: Curtain to be
coiled on a pipe of sufficient size to
carry door load with deflection not to
exceed .033 inches per foot of door
span and to be evenly balanced by
helical springs, oil tempered torsion
type. Cast iron barrel plugs will be used
to anchor springs to tension shaft and
pipe.
2.05 Hood will be minimum 24 gauge
(painted) (galvanized) sheet metal,
flanged at top for attachment to header
and flanged at bottom to provide
longitudinal stiffness. Hood will
enclose curtain coil and
counterbalance mechanism.*
(*All FM hoods will be furnished with a flame baffle)
2.06 Finish: Pipe, guides and bracket
plates will be coated with a flat black
prime paint.
2.07 Operation: Doors will be operated
by means of (manual push-up) (chain
hoist with gray cast iron gears)
(awning crank), (wall crank box)
(motor operation).
2.08 Automatic Closing Device will be
thermally actuated by means of a
fusible link rated @ 165 degrees F
.
2.09a Governor will be furnished to
regulate the rate of descent of door. It
will be the escapement type which is
not engaged during normal door
operation, but which after tension
release, will retard the speed during
automatic door closure to under
2' per second.
2.09b (Optional viscous fluid speed
governor is available. Will retard the
speed during automatic door closure to
under 2' per second.)
2.10 Label: Rolling fire doors up to 162
sq. ft and 13'6" in width or 12'0" in
height will bear the

(three) hour label or 4 (four) hour
label. Rolling fire doors will be
manufactured in strict accordance
with the requirements of Underwriters’
Laboratories-listed procedures, Factory
Mutual-approved procedures, standard
4100 (1990), and will bear their label.
F.M. label is available for the 3-hour fire
door only.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 Install the rolling fire doors in
accordance with Wayne-Dalton Corp.
instructions and standards, and in
accordance with the standards of the
National Fire Protection Association
Standard #80 (NFPA 80). Installation
and maintenance will only be by an
authorized Wayne-Dalton
representative.
3.02 Testing: Rolling steel fire doors
will be tested and witnessed, attesting
to their successful operation at the
time of installation.
3.03 Maintenance: Per NFPA 80: All
horizontal or vertical sliding and rolling
fire doors shall be inspected and tested
annually to check for proper operation
and full closure. Resetting of the
release mechanism shall be done in
accordance with the manufacturer’
s
instructions. A written record shall be
maintained and be made available to
the authority having jurisdiction.
