1.3 Firewall
The TWG870 protects your local PC network (LAN) through a built-in firewall function.
1.4 LAN
Up to 4 PCs can be connected to the cable modem directly using Ethernet cables, and additional
PCs wirelessly through the integrated WLAN Access Point (WiFi). The PCs are assigned their
network parameters (IP address, default gateway and DNS server) by the integrated DHCP
server.
1.5 Telephony
If you have subscribed to a telephone service by upc cablecom, you can connect up to two
analogue telephone sets to the cable modem.

2. Default factory settings
2.1 LAN
Network 192.168.0.0/24
Default gateway 192.168.0.1
DHCP address range 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.254
2.2 WLAN
You can find the name of the wireless network (SSID) and the password for the PSK encryption
(WPA2–PSK) on the label at the bottom of the device. These values differ from modem to modem
and can be adjusted individually (see Chapter 4.3).
For example:
2.3 Firewall
Activated:
- WAN blocking
- IPsec/PPTP pass-through
- Multicast
- SIP ALG
Deactivated:
- UPnP
- Remote management
For further information on the firewall settings, please refer to Chapter 4.
2.4 Reset to default factory settings
You can reset the modem to the default factory settings at any time. The easiest way to do this is
via the reset button at the back of the device. Press and hold the reset button for 15 seconds.
Alternatively, you can use the web interface. You can find the option to reset the device to the
default factory settings under “Password” in the “Status” menu.

3. Start-up
3.1 Cable connection
Connect the cable modem to your TV socket’s cable modem port using the supplied antenna
cable.
If your TV socket does not have a special modem port, please use the supplied adapter and
connect the modem directly to a free antenna port.
3.2 Activation
Connect the modem to the power supply using the supplied power adapter and switch it on. The
device is operational once the first four status indicators (from left to right: Power, DS, US, Online)
are illuminated continuously.

3.3 PC connection with Ethernet cable
Configure your PC via the DHCP network settings and connect it to one of the 4 Ethernet
connections on the cable modem using an Ethernet cable.
3.4 Wireless PC connection (WiFi)
WiFi is activated by default. The preset wireless network name (SSID) and password (WPA2–
PSK) can be found on the label at the bottom of the device:
Configure your PC with this wireless network name (SSID) and this password (WPA2–PSK) to
connect it to the network wirelessly.

4. Individual settings
The LAN/WLAN and firewall settings of the cable modem can be adjusted individually. You can
configure the modem through the web browser on your PC:
1. Launch the web browser on your PC (if your PC is already connected to the cable modem via
cable or WiFi).
2. Type the address http://192.168.0.1/ into your browser’s URL field. Press enter. The browser
will then establish a connection to the modem. If the connection is successful, you will be
prompted to enter your user name and password for the device.
3. Leave the user name field blank (default settings require no user name).
4. The default password is: admin
Now you are logged into the modem and can adjust various parameters. In general, we
recommend that you do not change any other parameters unless you are a professional user. The
parameters are self-explanatory for network experts.
In the following, we would like to make you aware of the following options:
- Changing the user name and password for the modem
- Changing the LAN settings
- Changing the WLAN settings

4.3 Switching off WLAN
The wireless function can be deactivated using the small button on the side of the WLAN modem.
You can however deactivate the wireless function via the administration area of your WLAN
modem as well.
To access this area, enter 192.168.0.1 in the WWW address line, leave the user field blank and
enter the password “admin”. Once you are in the administration area, click “Wireless” in the upper
part of the screen. Under “Interfaceyou can set the function to “Disabled”. Then click “Apply” to
confirm the change. The wireless function is now deactivated, which means Internet access will
now only be possible using a direct connection with an Internet cable.
If you wish to reactivate the wireless function, simply repeat the above-mentioned steps, but set
the function to “Enabled” under “Interface”.

4.5 Switching between router and bridge mode
Please note that changing to bridge mode carries a security risk. Bridge
mode deactivates the cable modem’s internal firewall. Changing to bridge
mode is at your own risk. upc cablecom GmbH accepts no liability for
damage arising from remote access due to the absence of firewall functions!
When using the Business Voice Digital Phone service we therefore
recommend you to dispense with the use of bridge mode in the absence of the required
know-how.
The TWG870 cable modem can be switched between router and bridge mode. The integrated
firewall is only active in router mode. The cable modem is set to router mode by default.
When operating the cable modem in bridge mode, you can also connect up to two devices at the
same time using the LAN ports or via WLAN, which are assigned a public IP Address through
DHCP.
When switching to bridge mode to operate your own router or own firewall, we recommend
switching off the WLAN at the same time, as described in Chapter 4.3.
To switch from router mode (“Legacy RG IPv4 Mode”) to bridge mode, go to menu item “Status”
and submenu item “Switch Mode”, change the “Switch Mode” option to “Disable Mode” and press
“Apply”. The cable modem will automatically reboot in bridge mode. You may need to restart your
computer.
