Introduction
This User Operation Guide explains how to operate the Toshiba Mobile Zero Client (TMZC) PC. The
TMZC Client PC works in conjunction with your TMZC Server and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)
environments. The capability of Toshiba Mobile Zero Client PC will depend on the implementation of
your VDI solution.
Please read this operation guide carefully before use to understand TMZC Client PC operation.
This operation guide uses the following notations to identify items of interest.

1. Overview
1.1. What is TMZC Client PC?
The TMZC (Toshiba Mobile Zero Client) Client PC is designed to operate in your VDI (Virtual
Desktop Interface) environment. The TMZC Client PC delivers a high security, highly managed
mobile solution because it does not have any storage device such as Hard Disk Drive (HDD) or
Solid State Drive (SSD). The following diagram shows an example of TMZC server and VDI
environment which is required in order to operate the TMZC Client PC.
Each TMZC user needs to have an account created by an administrator. Also, each TMZC Client PC
must be registered with a policy by the TMZC Authentication Server. The “Policy” will decide if that
TMZC Client PC can operate in the VDI environment. After the TMZC Client PC is authorized and
registered by the TMZC Authentication Server, the following events will take place to allow your
TMZC Client PC to operate.
1) Your TMZC Client PC will boot with your BIOS (Small Core) and connect to TMZC
Authentication Server
2) If your TMZC Client PC is authorized, then it connects to TMZC Download Server to
download TMZC System Module (Big Core)
3) After TMZC System Module (Big Core) is downloaded to your TMZC Client PC, it will be
executed and it will connect to your pre-defined VDI server to start the VDI session
Your administrator must create your account and/or set up your configuration in the
TMZC Authentication Server before you can begin to use your TMZC Client PC.
Your TMZC Client PC must be provisioned for your network environment. Please
check with your Administrator before first use.
Refer to the later chapter in this document for the ‘3. Using Setup Utility for BIOS
settings’.

2. Basic Operations
2.1. Getting Started
(1). Connect the power cord to the AC adaptor.
Either a 2-pin or 3-pin adaptor/cord is included with the computer depending on
the model.
(2). Connect the DC output plug of the AC adaptor to the DC IN jack on your computer.
・ All of the hardware connection diagrams in this guide are samples. Product
appearance is subject to change depending on the model you purchased.
・ Method of connection may differ depending on product purchased. Please
refer to detailed descriptions in the Quickstart guide provided
with your
computer.
(3). Plug one end of the cable into the LAN jack. Press gently until you hear the latch click
into place.
・ When communication is disconnected, the TMZC Client PC will shut down
automatically.
・ Press the power button more than five seconds if your system is completely
unresponsive. The system will do a hard shutdown. To retry the operation, turn
on the system by pressing the power button.
・ Connect to your network. The network you are connecting to must be able to
communicate with the TMZC Authentication Server and your VDI Server in
order for the TMZC client to function properly.
・ You can use either Wired LAN or Wireless LAN.

(4). Press the power button.
(5). If a user password is registered by the BIOS settings, the following screen will be
displayed. Input your user password and press [Enter] key.
(6). The following messages will be displayed when you first turn-on the TMZC Client PC.

If [Auto] is set in [LAN Connection] of the BIOS setup:
The TMZC Client PC will begin the wireless LAN connection process after failure to
connect via wired LAN.
If [Auto] is set in [Wi-Fi] of the BIOS setup:
The TMZC Client PC will start the wireless LAN connection process immediately.
When the TMZC Client PC connects to a Wi-Fi Access Point the following messages
will be displayed:

Wi-Fi Access Point selection screen.
‘2.4.7. Wi-Fi® Access Point settings’
When a Wi-Fi Access Point’s SSID is stored in the list, the following message will be
displayed.
If you press [s] key, the Wi-Fi Access Point selection screen will display

and the TMZC Client PC will try to connect to the Wi-Fi Access Point
If the TMZC Client PC fails to connect to this Wi-Fi Access Point, an error message
is displayed, and the Wi-Fi Access Point selection screen will be displayed.

After the TMZC Client PC connects to the TMZC Authentication Server and is
authenticated, the TMZC Download Server will download the System Module (Big
Core). The System Module will start the process to connect to your VDI server.
If the TMZC Client PC is NOT authenticated by the TMZC Authentication Server, an
error message will be displayed.

2.2. Turning off the power
(1). Before turning off power, please save the file(s) you have been working on
(2). Press power button to turn off the TMZC Client PC
2.3. Start your work in VDI Environment
(1). Choose your VDI Server
For VMware® please refer to their documents for detailed operations (eg. certain
screens are skipped when there is a fixed server, etc.).
(2). Input your Username, Password and Domain for the server.

(3). Choose your VDI session.
(4). Your Windows Desktop on a VDI session will be displayed (It may take several minutes
depending on your network speed).

2.4. Operating Basics in VDI Session
The basic operation is similar to normal Microsoft Windows. In addition, a shortcut bar for
VMware Horizon® may be displayed on the upper side of Desktop (It may not be displayed
depending on which VMware version you use or your administrator settings). In addition, a
TMZC shortcut menu will be displayed on the upper side of the desktop when [FN] key is
pressed.
2.4.1. VMware Shortcut Bar
This VMware Shortcut Bar is usually displayed in the upper side of Windows Desktop. It has
several functions, such as: exit from VDI session, re-size VDI window, etc. Please refer to
VMware documentation for more details.
2.4.2. TMZC Indicator usage
TMZC Indicator will be displayed on the upper side of the desktop by pushing the [FN] key.

Therefore, please press [FN]+[F8] before pulling out the LAN cable to

2.4.3. [FN] key combination Shortcut key
The function keys (F1 ~ F12) are the 12 keys at the top of your keyboard.
The function keys let you enable or disable various features of your TMZC Client PC. Please see
the table below for actions of each [FN]+[Fx] function keys.

2.4.4. SD Cache Feature
By using the SD cache feature, the TMZC System Module (Big Core) can be encrypted and
locally cached on your SD card. This will reduce the time from power on to VDI logon screen,
especially if the user is in an area with low bandwidth network connection.
1. Prepare an SD card with cached TMZC System Module
2. Check that your TMZC Client PC is turned off
3. Insert SD card
4. Press power button
Refer to (5) of "2.1 Getting Started
" after this operation.
If this function works correctly, “Downloading TMZC Modules”
process will be
skipped and the following message will NOT be displayed
2.4.5. External USB Mouse and other USB devices
You can use a USB mouse in a VDI environment with the TMZC Client PC. To use the USB
mouse, please insert the USB mouse in any USB port of the TMZC Client PC ( ).
・ USB mouse is supported by the USB device redirection function of VMware.
・ VMware USB device redirection is a function in View that allows USB devices to
be connected to the virtual desktop as if they had been physically plugged into it.
・ Please refer to information on the VMware website and/or ask VMware support
regarding functions and features which are supported by USB devices in
virtual desktop environments
as it may differ from standard Windows
environments.
・ After a few minutes of inactivity, the USB mouse may be put into sleep mode. To
resume operation start using the USB mouse, and it should come back to
operation.
2.4.6. Display Settings
You can use an External display monitor in VDI environments. Insert the RGB or HDMI® cable
into RGB or HDMI port of the TMZC Client PC ( / ). Choose the display mode by
pressing [FN]+[F5] key (Please refer to 2.4.4. which describes [FN] key Combination Shortcut
Key).

In addition, you may have to change the display mode using the short-cut bar of VMware Horizon
view if you choose the “Extended mode”.
・ Depending on your external monitor, you may not be able to display in full
screen mode
・ In that case, there will be black striped area on either/both top/bottom and
right/left of the screen
・ The TMZC Client PC does not have the function to change display resolution.
・ In addition, please note that in this VDI environment, you will not be able to play
back protected contents and output to external HDMI devices

2.4.7. Wi-Fi® Access Point Settings
When the default Wi-Fi Access Point has not been set or when connection to a preset Wi-Fi
Access Point fails, the Wi-Fi Access Point setting screen will be displayed.

2.4.8. When EAP-TLS-supported Access Point is selected
If EAP-TLS supported Wi-Fi Access Point is selected, you will see the following display. Operate
authentication for its Wi-Fi Access Point according to its screen.
EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol)-TLS(Transport Layer Security)
is a
standard security used in Wi-Fi Access Points.
Please ask your IT manager whether you will be using a Wi-Fi Access Point with
EAP-TLS security.
1. Selection of PEAP or TLS
If the following screen is displayed, please select either PEAP or TLS.
2. If <PEAP> is selected
Please input User name and/or Password to authenticate with this Wi-Fi Access Point.
3. If <TLS> is selected
The TMZC Client PC will try to authenticate using a stored certificate in BIOS. This
certificate is delivered from TMZC Server.
4. If <Cancel> is selected
It will return to [Available Wi-Fi Access Points] screen

5. “Connecting to Wi-Fi Access Point…”
If you are authenticated and connect to the Wi-Fi Access Point, you will progress to next
startup process.
If you are not authenticated to connect to the Wi-Fi Access Point, an error message will
be displayed and you will return to the [Available Wi-Fi Access Points] screen.

2.4.9. Switching network connection type in VDI environment
You can switch the network connection type while working in your VDI environment.
1. Press [FN] key
TMZC Indicator base menu will appear on the upper side of screen.
2. Press [F8] key while holding down the [FN] key
Current selected device is indicated in white color (non-selected devices are shown in
grey).
3. Press [F8] to toggle through network devices. When your desired network device icon
is white, release [F8] key to select it.

Please make sure to save your work before switching your network connection.
Please note following:
・ The Wi-Fi Access Point used during [FN]+[F8] shortcut operation is the Wi-Fi
Access Point which was stored in BIOS. This is the Wi-Fi Access point which
you connected to in the selection menu last time.
・ Please first connect your network cable into RJ45 before operating [FB]+[F8]
to change to wired network.
・ Please pull out your network cable after you have successfully switched to
Wi-Fi.
・ If switching network fails, the following messages will be displayed:
Wired network Wi-Fi network:
[Failed to connect to Wi-Fi network SSID : xxxx ]
WirelessWired:
[Failed to connect to wired network]
The following message may also be displayed, and the TMZC Client PC
will shutdown
