GENERAL & SPECIFIC
SAFETY RULES
1. KNOW YOUR TOOL
Read and understand the owners manual and labels affixed to the
t
ool. Learn its application and limitations as well as its specific
potential hazards.
2. GROUND THE TOOL.
T
his tool is equipped with an approved 3-conductor cord and a
3-prong grounding type plug to fit the proper grounding type
receptacle. The green conductor in the cord is the grounding wire.

onnect the green wire to a live terminal.
3. KEEP GUARDS IN PLACE.
Keep in good working order, properly adjusted and aligned.
4. REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND WRENCHES.
Form habit of checking to see that keys and adjusting wrenches
are removed from tool before turning it on.
5. KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN.
Cluttered areas and benches invite accidents. Make sure the floor
is clean and not slippery due to wax and sawdust build-up.
6. AVOID DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENT.
Don’t use power tools in damp or wet locations or expose them to
rain. Keep work area well lit and provide adequate surrounding
work space.

watch) because they could get caught in moving parts. Non-slip
footwear is recommended. Wear protective hair covering to
contain long hair. Roll up long sleeves above the elbows.

Serious injury could occur if the tool tips over. Do not store
materials such that it is necessary to stand on the tool to reach

19. CHECK DAMAGED PARTS.
Before further use of the tool, a guard or other parts that are
damaged should be carefully checked to ensure that they will
operate properly and perform their intended function. Check for
alignment of moving parts, breakage of parts, mounting, and any
other conditions that may affect its operation. A guard or other
parts that are damaged should be properly repaired or replaced.
20. NEVER LEAVE MACHINE RUNNING UNATTENDED.
Turn power ‘’OFF’’. Don’t leave any tool running until it comes to a
complete stop.
SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES FOR DRUM SANDERS
1
. DO NOT jam workpiece into the machine during operation. Firmly
grasp the workpiece in both hands and ease it into the machine
using light pressure.
2. DO NOT allow anyone to stand at the outfeed end when feeding
your stock.
3. DO NOT attempt to sand thin stock by using a “dummy” board under
your workpiece.
4. DO NOT place hands near, or in contact with, sanding drum during
operation.
5. DO NOT allow fingers to get pinched between board and conveyor
belt during operation. This may pull the operator’s hand into the
machine and cause serious injury or death!
6. NEVER operate the sander without an adequate dust collection
system in place and running.
7. NEVER sand more than one piece of stock at a time.
8. ALWAYS inspect workpiece for nails, staples, knots, and other
imperfections that could be dislodged and thrown from the machine
during sanding operations.
Unpacking
WARNING
: For your own safety, never connect the single drum sander to a power source until all assembly steps are complete, and you have
read and understood safety, adjustments and operational instructions.
To ensure maximum performance from your King Canada single drum sander, clean it properly; and install it accurately before use. Remove
c
ontents from crate. You will find a small carton, inside are the machines adjustment tools and parts that need to be assembled.
Transportation
This machine must be lifted and positioned in the required work area onto the supplied stand, this should be done using a forklift or a lifting
hook. Make sure the equipment used to lift the sander (300 lb) is of adequate capacity.
1-Conveyor belt height crank handle. Turn this crank handle clock-
wise to raise the conveyor belt and counterclockwise to lower it.
2-4” Dust chute. It is necessary to always use this machine with an
appropriate dust collection system connected to this dust chute.
3-Sanding drum “On/Off” switch. Turns the sanding drum motor
on/off. This swicth comes with a safety key which can be removed to
prevent unauthorized use.

GROUNDING
This drum sander must be grounded. If it should malfunction or
breakdown, grounding provides a path of least resistance for
electric current, to reduce the risk of electric shock. This drum
sander is equipped with a cord having an equipment-grounding
conductor and grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an
appropriate outlet that is properly installed and grounded in
accordance with all local codes and ordinances.
Not all outlets are properly grounded. If you are not sure if your
outlet is properly grounded, have it checked by a qualified
electrician.

10V OPERATION
As received from the factory, your drum sander is wired to run on
110V current. This drum sander is intended for use on a electrical
circuit that has an outlet and a plug which looks like the one
illustrated in Fig.1.

ORDINANCES. NEVER USE IN CANADA.
EXTENSION CORDS
The use of any extension cord will cause some loss of power. Use
the table (Fig.2) to determine the minimum wire size (A.W.G-
American Wire Gauge) extension cord required. Use only 3-wire
extension cords which have 3-prong grounding type plugs and
3-hole receptacles which accept the tool’s plug.
For circuits that are further away from the electrical circuit box, the
wire size must be increased proportionately in order to deliver ample
voltage to the drum sander motors. Refer to Fig.2 for wire length and
size.

Assembling drum sander carry handles
Assemble both carry handles (A) Fig.3 to each side cover (B) using 2 cap screws to secure
e
ach handle.
Assembling stand and mounting drum sander on stand
Assemble the stand legs and cross brackets using the supplied carriage bolts, washers,
spring washers and hex. nuts as shown in A-Fig.4. Only hand tighten the hardware. Once
stand is assembled, install the 4 corner rubber feet as shown in B-Fig.4.
Once completely assembled, place the stand on its feet in the location you plan on using
your drum sander and tighten all hardware. Make sure the floor surface is level, if not,
adjust the corresponding rubber feet to level the top of the stand.
Raise the drum sander and place it onto the stand. It is recommended to use lifting
equipment or obtain help doing this, this drum sander is heavy! Once the sander is
positioned on the stand, line up mounting holes and secure drum sander to stand from
underneath the stand using 4 cap screws, washers and spring washers as shown in
C-Fig.4.
Assembling and installing conveyor belt handwheel
In the loose items box, remove the handwheel and handwheel handle. Assemble the
handle (A)
Fig.5 to the handwheel (B), use 14mm open end wrench on the flat (C) of the
handle to securely tighten it.
Install the handwheel assembly onto the crank shaft on the left side of the drum sander,
make sure the handwheel base engages the lock pin in the crank shaft.
Connecting the single drum sander to a dust collection system

COLLECTION SYSTEM INSTALLED AND RUNNING!
This 16” single drum sander is equipped with a 4” dust chute (A) Fig.6. Before any
adjustment or operation, a 4” dust collection hose connected to an operational dust
collection system must be secured to the dust chute using a ring clamp. It is very important
that the dust collection hoses gets suspended so that it doesn’t come in contact with the
front or rear of the conveyor belt.

djusting the Sanding Thickness
To set the sanding height to the required thickness, use the crank handwheel (A & B) Fig.7.
Turning the handwheel clockwise will raise the conveyor table up towards the sanding
drum. Turning the handwheel counterclockwise will lower the conveyor table.
Depth setting used during surface sanding of stock are adjusted by considering several
variables. The hardness of the material, the width of the material and the conveyor belt feed
speed are all considered when determining the amount of material to be removed on each
p
ass.
N
ever remove more than 1/64” of material in one pass.
T
he variable feed rate is
set to prevent burning and provide a smooth sanded surface on different types and widths
of materials. As a general rule, 1/4 turn of the crank shaft handwheel or 1/64” or less is
recommended for coarser grits and softer woods, while 1/8 turn or 1/128” may be more
desirable with harder woods and/or finer grits. When selecting conveyor belt feed rate,
consider the width of your stock, the wider the material, the lower the feed rate must be.
Similarly, the harder the material, the slower the feed rate.
When the height thickness is unknown, set the workpiece to be sanded on the conveyor
belt, under the sanding drum. Raise the conveyor table until the sanding drum contacts the
workpiece, observe the depth scale (A) Fig.8 on the front of the machine, the depth scale
indicator (B) will indicate the thickness of the present position.
Conveyor Belt Tension and Tracking
The conveyor belt tension and tracking adjustments are controlled by adjustment screws
(A) and hex. nuts (B) Fig.9 located at the rear of the conveyor belt assembly. If the
conveyor belt is too loose or tracks off to one side, adjust as follows:
If the conveyor belt is slipping, then the conveyor belt tension needs to be increased. Adjust
adjustment screw (A) Fig.9 on both sides of the conveyor while holding the hex. nut (B) in
place using an open end wrench.Turn both adjustment screws (A) clockwise (even amount
of turns on both sides) to tension conveyor belt.
If the conveyor belt is not tracking properly, then an adjustment is needed.Conveyor belt
tracking adjustments must be made while the conveyor belt is running. If the conveyor belt
tracks toward the right side, turn the adjustment screw located on the right side clockwise
(while holding the hex. nut (B) in place using an open end wrench), this will make the
conveyor belt move to the left. Once this adjustment is done, continue to run the conveyor
for approximately 10 minutes to observe the tracking adjustment you made. Be patient, the
belt tracks slowly. If the conveyor belt tracks too far to the left, readjust adjustment screw
located on the right side, turning this adjustment screw counterclockwise will move the
conveyor belt to the right.
Adjusting Spring T
ension of Pressure Rollers
The spring tension of the infeed pressure roller (A) Fig.10 and outfeed pressure roller (B)
can be adjusted to reduce snipe.
T
o adjust the spring tension of the pressure rollers;
Unlatch and lift the sanding drum cover. Adjust the spring tension adjustment pan hd
screws (A) Fig.11 at both ends of each pressure roller. Turn the adjustment pan hd screws
clockwise to increase the pressure roller spring tension or counterclockwise to decrease
the pressure roller spring tension.
Increasing the tension will increase the pressure of the board on the conveyor belt, but will
also be less forgiving of irregularities in the board and could cause jamming.

Removing the sanding belt
WARNING! MAKE SURE THAT THE MACHINE IS DISCONNECTED FROM THE
POWER SOURCE BEFORE REMOVING OR INSTALLING A SANDING BELT!
I
n order to access the sanding drum, unlatch and lift the sanding drum cover. The sanding
belt is held in place at both ends of the drum by a spring loaded clamp (left side) and a
spring loaded clamp with tensionner (right side). Apply finger pressure on these spring
l
oaded clamps and pull the sanding belt out of them.
IMPORTANT: BEFORE DOING ANY SANDING, WE RECOMMEND REMOVING THE
SANDING BELT FROM THE SANDING DRUM TO MAKE A PATTERN AS REFERENCE
FOR FUTURE REPLACEMENT SANDING BELTS.
Unwind the old sanding belt and use it as a pattern or use the pattern in the illustration
below to cut the new 3-1/4” x 96” (approx.) sanding belt, it is necessary to cut a triangular
portion of the sanding belt at each end using the dimensions below.
Installing sanding belt
Pull the left spring loaded clamp lever (A) Fig.12 forward to allow the “L” end of the
sanding belt tab (see illustration above) to slide under the clamp (B). Release the clamp to
lock the belt tab into place. Refer to Fig.12 as reference, this figure shows the proper
starting position of the sanding belt.
Roll the sanding belt onto the drum, keeping the edges snug as shown in Fig.13. A small
gap inbetween the sanding belt is fine but overlapping is not good.
Once the edge of the sanding belt reaches the right edge of the drum, make a mark on the
edge of the sanding belt as shown in Fig.14. Unwind, unclamp and remove the sanding belt
from the drum. Using the mark on the sanding belt as reference, cut the triangular portion
away as shown in illustration above and repeat the installation procedure.
Once you have reinstalled the sanding belt and have reached the right side of the drum,
push the spring loaded clamp lever and tensionner assembly (A
& B) Fig.15 backwards to
allow the “R” end of the sanding belt tab (see illustration above) to slide under the clamp
(C). In order to clamp and tension the sanding belt, first release the clamp lever to clamp
the sanding belt tab, finally release the entire tensionner assembly to tension the sanding belt.
Drum sander controls
Important note: The conveyor motor and the sanding drum motor operate independently
from each other. The On/Off switch with removable safety key (A) Fig.16 activates and
stops the sanding drum and a separate On/Of
f switch with removable safety key (B)
activates and stops the variable speed conveyor belt. The variable speed adjustment dial
(C) sets the conveyor feed speed.
Note:
Always start the dust collector before turning on the drum sander.
To turn the machine on, lift the switch with removable safety key (A) to the “On” position to
start the sanding drum. Lift the conveyor belt switch with removable safety key (B) to the
“On” position to start the conveyor belt feed. Both these switches come with a removable
safety key that allows each switch to be locked in the “Off” position. To activate the locking
feature, lower switch to the “Off” position and pull the safety key out of the switch. To
reactivate the switch, simply reposition the safety key in the switch. Set the conveyor belt
feed speed using the variable speed adjustment dial (C). Turning dial clockwise will
increase the conveyor belt speed.
When the operation is done, lower both the conveyor belt On/Of
f switch and the sanding
drum On/Off switch to the “Off” position to stop the conveyor belt and sanding drum motor.

Sanding guidelines and set-up
Under most sanding conditions, a normal sanding pass is no more than 1⁄64” deep. This depth can be achieved by approximately 1⁄4 turn of the
conveyor crank handwheel. Attempts to remove too much can cause jamming, wood burning, rapid sanding belt wear or tearing, poor finish and
c
onveyor belt slippage. We recommend that wide stock be sent through two to three times without adjusting the conveyor height. Turn the stock
180° to ensure an even sanding pass.
Steps to follow for test run;
S
tart the dust collector, make thickness adjustment by placing test workpiece on the conveyor and turn the conveyor crank handwheel until the
test workpiece comes in contact with the pressure rollers and sanding drum. Remove the test workpiece from the conveyor and start the
s
anding drum and the conveyor motors, set the appropriate sanding feed speed and feed
your test workpiece.
Retrieve the test workpiece at the outfeed end of the conveyor and inspect it. Make
necessary adjustments until you gain more experience and produce an even sanding finish.
Appropriate conveyor feed speed
The correct speed to use depends on the type of stock you are using (hardwood vs.
softwood). As a general rule, a slower feed rate will sand the surface smoother, but runs the
risk of burning the wood; a faster feed rate will remove material faster, but runs the risk of
overloading the motor. Use trial-and-error to determine the best settings for your specific
applications.
Selecting the appropriate grit of sanding belt
There are many types of sanding belts to choose from. As a general rule, sand a workpiece
with progressively higher grit numbers, with no one grit increase of more than 50. Ultimately,
the type of wood you use and your desired finish will determine the best grit type to install on
your drum sander. Here is a standard guideline, 60 Grit/coarse, 80-100 grit/medium, 120-180
grit/fine and 220 grit/very fine.
Maintenance
NOTE: Disconnect machine from power source, before performing any maintenance
or lubrication.
The table height adjustment screw shafts, located at either end of the machine must be well
lubricated with gear grease at all times. Verify that all nuts and screws are properly tightened
before sanding. Verify that the sanding belt is installed properly and has not become loose
or torn. Remove any dust or particles from machine; never allow dust to accumulate on or in
the machine.
Replacing the coveyor belt
If the conveyor belt gets too worn out, the operations will not produce satisfactory results.
The
conveyor belt will need to be replaced for perfect results. It is recommended to remove both
side covers. To replace the conveyor belt, first remove the 2 pan head screws (A) Fig.17
which secure the front nip guard (B). Remove the nip guard (B). Then remove the four cap
screws (C) Fig.17 (two on each side) which hold the conveyor belt and motor to the frame.
Tilt the entire conveyor table and slide it out from the sander frame. Release the conveyor
belt tension (see Conveyor Belt Tension and Tracking section-Fig.9). Slide the used
conveyor belt (D) off and replace it with an identical one. Reinstall the conveyor table and
make sure to follow all the conveyor belt adjustments found in this manual.
Tensioning or replacing the drive belt
The sanding drum is driven by a belt (A) Fig.18 and powered by a motor. If the belt becomes
too loose or needs to be replaced, follow these procedures;
Remove the right and left side covers by removing pan hd screws. To tension the belt, loosen the upper hex. nuts (A) Fig.19 and then tighten
the two lower hex. nuts (B). Proper tension is achieved when the belt can be deflected about 3⁄4” with moderate finger pressure at the midpoint.
Once belt is tensioned properly, retighten the upper hex. nuts against the lower hex. nuts.
To replace worn belt, release the belt tension by loosening the upper and lower hex. nuts (A
&
B) Fig.19 and pivot the motor upwards until you
are able to remove the belt. Reposition new indentical belt around the sanding drum pulley and the motor pulley and retension the belt as
described in the above step.
